Title: UFI filters. Should I use them
Post by: groundhog105 on January 28, 2015, 09:55:08 PM
I have a couple of UFI filters and am doing a service but I thought people have posted some major problems with them. What is the opinion of you guys with a lot of experience with these filters in the older bikes using filters inside the sump.

The problem you might be referring to, is that of the oil filter unscrewing in service. The fix involves attaching a hose pipe clamp around the filter. There has been so much written about it on WG that a search will almost certainly find it easily ;D

Edited to add
Having said that it was easy, I thought I should try it myself

Don't use them! Send them to me an I'll properly dispose of them for you.

I've used up my stock of them, and won't be going back. Spotty quality control. Bad gaskets. Poor paint prep.  :pop
Edit: Oh, forgot. Leaks around the crimp.

What is the best alternative to the UFI brand? Can someone post a link please? Thanks!

That one won't work on bikes like a T3, Convert, G5, SP, Cal II, etc.

I've never had a problem with the UFI filters myself.

No, send them to ME!   I have the proper disposal method that will take the evil out of them.

I screw them onto the bottom of my Guzzi motor and let them decontaminate themselves while I travel 6,000 miles or so, then take them off and they're safe ....

Is this a regular problem (with the UFI)? That's what I have in mine now, should I be worried?

I just picked up my V11S from a local dealer after some service work, and he gave me a free oil and filter change. He took off the hose clamp that I put on the last oil filter, and now I'm contemplating dropping the sump and adding the clamp. I also need to install my Roper slopper plate I purchased a few years ago as well…might be a good time to do that.

Has anybody here actually had a UFI filter loosen up on them and cause loss of oil pressure?

my ufi problems have been a sloppy gasket and leaky seams.  One seam issue was maybe caused by poor paint in the seam area.  There was a split at the seam and the area was rusted after about 2.5k.  The other had no such defects -- straight up seam failure.  The leakers were all externally mounted, so the failures were caught early.  I'd hate to think of what might have happened in they failed in the sump where the leaks wouldn't have been detected until the next time the filter was changed.

Oh, yeah. Greg Field was the first to report it when he was at M.I. as well as I can remember. There were several. That's where the hose clamp stuff started. I think they were bad gaskets, but that's only a guess. I had a leaker on the Norge, but wouldn't have known it if it was inside the pan. I've had two glue themselves to the Mighty Scura that I had a devil of a time removing. Gasket again.
The Bosch 3330 is a decent, not great filter according to tests, but it is common automotive filter, and if they had these problems it would be immediately obvious. People don't like their new car dripping on the floor.  ;D

All the loose filters I have heard of were all second hand info from this forum.  I have never found a loose filter and, to my knowledge, a factory bulletin warning of loose filters and recommending a hose clamp, has never been issued.  However, if you can stand the added weight, a hose clamp will provides piece-of-mind.  A simple adjustment to the suspension should compensate for the additional weight.   ;D

Some folks just don't read the packaging..... the delaminating paint is not a problem, UFI realized modern oils do not contain enough ZDDP, so the paint used is high in ZDDP, the natural delamination assures that your engine receives not only the filtering it needs (of the paint chips) but that little extra dose of ZDDP, er, at least that's what I thought it said..... ~;

I've never filtered my UFI. It works just fine without filtering.

OKAY: Bosch 3330 appears to be a universal filter for auto applications plus many other motorcycles.  Question I have is the Bosch 72161 [cross referenced tot the 3330] a better filter because of its increased length?
