Title: *2015 Wild Guzzi Western Adventure / Colorado Not-A-Rally - June 20/21/22, 2015*
Post by: rocker59 on February 04, 2015, 09:09:05 AM
Some of you may remember the 2013 Wildguzzi Western Adventure Not-A-Rally:  Link (http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=58457.0)

Well, we're doing something similar again this year, during/after the Colorado Classic 1000:  Link (http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=74520.0)

As last time, this will be a "bring your own everything", "do your own thing", not-a-rally.  Just a bunch of like-minded Guzzisti who happen to be in Colorado for some great riding that weekend...

The Colorado Classic will be finishing in Cripple Creek, so we will be looking at camping opportunities in the Cripple Creek area  ***and possibly Buena Vista*** , but I'd like to gauge interest before making any calls or trying to set something up.  There is a KOA just outside Cripple Creek that has campsites, RV hookups and and cabins.

Basic Schedule we've been talking about:

Saturday June 20:  I'll be riding the CC1000, but Dusty and others will be hanging around camp.

Sunday June 21:  I'll arrive at the campground about lunchtime and probably hang around the rest of the day.  Maybe have a dinner get-together.

Monday June 22:  We would like to go on a good ride somewhere.  Pike's Peak!  A bunch of Guzzis up on Pike's Peak together will rock!  It's all paved now, so no excuses!

Tuesday June 23:  I'll have to break camp early and head back to Arkansas.

So speak up if you're interested, and we'll get it all figured out.

3/04/15:

I've emailed with Tom at KOA Cripple Creek and he would be glad to have us.

He will allow two tents on each primitive camping site.  There are also some Kabins that can be rented.

Please mention "Moto Guzzi" when you email him with questions, or make reservations, and he'll try to keep us close together.  It's not a large campground, so I don't think it'll be a problem.

Would love to come, but I'll be in the diametrically opposite direction at or on the road to/from the National, that week ....

2013 was a great time and I highly recommend the Colorado NAR to anyone in that part of the world ....

that's the weekend of the National in New Hampshire, back to back with (Grand Marais) Minnesota the following weekend.

probably not much overlap considering folks in the west won't likely attend the National.

Given work schedule I'd be more inclined to be there on Thu or Fri and leave on Sun.

Hmmm that's a better fit to the 1000.

Yeah.  2,000 miles apart.  And two totally different types of events.

I understand.  Scheduling around work sucks.  That's why I missed the CC1000 last year.

I've considered having the Guzzi meetup before the CC1000 and after.  Have been thinking about this for a few years.

Since the CC1000 starts in Denver, will take a day and a half of time on Sat/Sun and ends in Cripple Creek, having the Guzzi get-together in Cripple Creek after the CC1000 is a better fit for me, and any of us who will be riding in that event.

Any of us riding in the CC1000 would not be able to be at a campout in the Cripple Creek area on Friday or Saturday, since we'll be in Denver prepping for the ride.  And, I don't really want to have a campout in metro Denver before the CC1000.  Not that there's anything wrong with Denver, but it's a big city and I prefer to be away from them as much as possible.

We're still in early planning, but Dusty will likely be at the Cripple Creek area campground on Saturday.

Nice choice for a location.  I've stayed in Cripple Creek several times.  Good roads in the area.  The casino's provide plenty of rooms and food.
I think I usually stay at The Double Eagle.  A newer place on the main street.

A 2 day ride from Phoenix.  But day #2 from Durango to Cripple Creek is a winner.
Give the Scura a good workout.  Put me down as a "maybe."

:+1   Unfortunately, I can not attend this year.  My current plans have me in Fort Collins, CO at a memorial event for a long time friend on the 21st and 22nd and then heading NE to the MN Rally in Grand Marais, MN.

Have a great time and ride safe.

CC1000 finish line is at The Double Eagle.  I'll be staying there Saturday Night, since my arrival will probably be midnight-ish.

We tried to stay at the Double Eagle in 1998 , we were told "no MCs in the underground parking" . Maybe their policy has changed , but left a sour taste .

  Dusty

3rd floor of the Double Eagle parking deck is reserved for CC1000 entrants / guests.

In 2013 I showed up on a Honda Pacific Coast, looked like a bright red inflatable plastic bike.   If I didn't get run out of town on a rail, you sure won't ... !

Maybe, but scheduling around a fixed pension check that's 25% of what you used to make when you were working is no walk in the park, neither!   :o   :o

The Colorado Springs/Cripple Creek area has lots of cool stuff . The mining town just down the road from CC , the Pikes Peak hillclimb museum , the Cliff Dwellings , several hot blonds in bimmers , (OK , that last one doesn't count), anyway , lots to do besides gamble  :)

I will go ahead and put both me and the wife on the "Maybe" list. This is right in my backyard but I already have a weeks vacation in the Caribbean the month prior. If we both don't make it for the full thing I will almost definitely make at least one day and night.
It was a blast in 2013 and I am sure we can pull something together for 2015. ;-T

Rocker, check PM.  LongRanger, check snail mail in a few days for my belated registration.  AlanP, let's do it again!  Cripple Creek is a really cool town, isolated, amazing vistas, nice history, and I have actually stayed at the Cripple Creek KOA before.  It is HIGH ELEVATION (10,000 feet, highest KOA in the world), so don't worry about being too warm, especially if you are tent camping.  Life is short, ride hard!

Uh oh, maybe I should show up on my VX800 since it's the only bike I have that isn't bothered by high altitude(CV carbs).  :-\

alright, alright, alright...

The host at KOA Cripple Creek is willing to work with us.  He will allow two (2) tents per site in the primitive camping area.

Those sites run about $26.89 per day, so divided by two would be pretty cheap.

They have Kamping Kabins beginning at something like $57.89 that sleep up to six people.

So, I need to know about how many of you will be camping and how many might rent a Kabin.

Remember, this is a NAR, so you'll have to rent your own space.  I just need to give him fair warning to be expecting us.

35-degrees and raining at 2:00 am in Crested Butte Colorado was pretty cold!

I'm probably going to buy some new gear for the ride this year.

In 2009 I had to stop too often to add and remove layers and rain gear.

Tonight I confirmed reservations at Lakewood and at Cripple Creek.

Really looking forward to getting out there for a few days!

In anticipation of Cripple Creek, I began tarting up the T for a four-day trip. Gail's pillion jaunts have never gone more than three hours at a stretch and while she likes the Guzzi saddle better than the Suzuki's, she likes the little sissy bar on the Suzi. So I put a top box, with a backrest, on the T. I hate the way it looks but she loves to lean on it. I'll now have to move the turn signals back to the box to make room for the larger panniers we've acquired to pack for high altitude and chilly evenings.

I hope I can find a way to do long tours with Gail, on the Guzzi, without making it look like a Goldwing. I like the bike trim, and always have.

Anyway, here's her armchair. Panniers next.

I know exactly what you mean about trying not to "visually" overload the bike, but that backrest is essential for a passenger; at least for MY passenger!   If you can do a small luggage rack and a short sissy-bar with a pad on it at just the right place for lumbar support for the pillion, that's ideal.   But for our Stelvio, it turned out that the top box with a large pad on it was the ideal riding configuration for Fay, and so I subsumed my minor desires for "look" to her major desire for "rideability".

You soon get used to it!!

Are you staying in Denver the night of June 19?  If you are, the Denver contingent should meet for dinner.

Yes. I'll be arriving in Denver Friday afternoon. I want to check-in for the CC1000 around 6pm, but I'm otherwise free. I'll be staying at the hotel starting point.

A Guzzi  get-together sounds good.  Maybe there's a pizza joint or Italian place nearby the hotel...

I will go ahead and put both me and the wife on the "Maybe" list. This is right in my backyard but I already have a weeks vacation in the Caribbean the month prior. If we both don't make it for the full thing I will almost definitely make at least one day and night.
It was a blast in 2013 and I am sure we can pull something together for 2015. ;-T

Skippy

I am still trying to set up my schedule to make the camp and group ride. At a minimum I will make a day trip out of it.  ;-T

mike, word is, I'm goin! I'll be talking a nice back road ride across Kansas on state hy. 160 just north of the oklahomie line. Through liberal ks and on to canon city. I know a gravel road from canon city that drops in the backside of cripple creek that runs through 3 (I think) tunnels through solid stone. Nice remote backroad. See you there!

Hopefully we can get a roll call of who will be around on the 20th.  I'll be somewhere between Denver and Cripple Creek on Saturday, the 20th, so won't be around the KOA until midday Sunday, the 21st.

Looks like Dusty will not be making it, so we need to find another "camp host"!

That doesn't sound too bad, but Rocker and I are also worried about the 999 miles and various high passes that the Colorado Classic 1000 route will cover before we ever get to Cripple Creek  it won't be that warm at times when the night riding arrives

I was underdressed last time and got pretty cold in the last few hours of the ride.

Now I'm worried that my new Olympia 1-piece may be too warm!  At least it's waterproof and I won't have to carry separate rain gear this time.  In 2009, we had to put on, take off, and put on rain gear something like four times during the ride.

Looks like Marcia and our dawg will be coming along.  We'll be in Cripple Creek Thursday Night, then I'll ride up to Denver alone on Friday.  And, will be riding the CC1000 solo.  We're still planning on being at the KOA through Tuesday Morning.

The Sport 1100 hasn't seen Colorado since 1999, so I'm looking forward to sampling its performance at altitude with the FCR41 carbs and full Staintune that its acquired since being out there last.  Right now it's returning mid- to high-40s fuel economy, so I'm not planning on messing with the carbs.  Hoping I can maintain at least 35mpg at elevation.  5-gallons of gas in the tank, so 150-160 mile fuel stops should be easy.  There will be a 1-gal Rotopax fuel cell in my tail bag, just in case!

Great....  Tropical Storm Bill appears to be setting up join us on our Arkansas>Colorado part of the trip Thursday.

Looks like Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri will be getting soaked over the next few days.

I'm not looking forward to driving a couple hundred miles in that kind of rain, but those are the breaks.

Great time in Cripple Creek and Victor, in perfect weather. I counted eight Guzzis at the KOA. Gail and I headed home this morning at 10am, broke for lunch at Morrison and arrived home in good order before 2pm.  Thanks to Mike and Mike, Tim and John, Scott, Dennis etc for good talk and sane riding.

I didn't take a lot of photos but Rocker59 did. Here are a few of mine:

John is so amiable that it's impossible to rag him. Just as I found it impossible to tease Lannis about his plastic Honda at Ouray.

We're secure in our motorcycling masculinity .... !    Man, I was RIDING; how can I be teased about something I feel GOOD about?

Now if I feel "guilty" about something, the teasing will work, and work well .....

Red and I arrived home at 10pm tonight, after a 13-hour drive from Cripple Creek.

Great weekend in Colorado!  Rain on Thursday, but perfect weather since.

Mile High Guzzi and I successfully completed the Colorado Classic 1000 on Saturday.  He on his 1200 Sport.  Me on my Sport 1100.

Two groups of four successfully assaulted Pikes Peak on Monday.

Good riding, good food, good campfire time with some great Guzzisti !!!

I think we had 12 people with nine Guzzis and one Triumph.

I've got hundreds of photos to go through and upload to Smugmug, but will update this thread as soon as I can.

I guess I need to check in here more than every few months.  This event sounds like it would have been a better time than the BMW rally that I attended.  And close to home...    Will keep my open and ears open to see if it happens next year.

I'm on an every-other-year schedule for the WildGuzzi Western Adventure, so we'll probably be doing this again somewhere in Colorado or New Mexico in June 2017, if all goes well.

But, talk to Archangel about the Paonia "Top of the Rockies" rally that's coming up.  He is working on putting together a Guzzi presence there, and it sounds like a good time.

It was a great "long weekend" in Colorado, and I'd like to thank everyone who rode up to the KOA Cripple Creek for a little Guzzi fellowship.

Here are some pix and story:

Wednesday/Thursday:

My original plan was to haul to Denver, but I never was happy with the idea of having to return to Denver for my truck.  Once we decided on the NAR in Cripple Creek, I decided I'd leave the truck there.  As luck would have it, Red was able to join me, so we added some days to our Kabin reservation, staying Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon nights.   I wouldn't have to worry about retrieving my truck, and I'd have someone to act as search & rescue, should I need it while on the CC1000.

The Tropical Depression that had flooded Texas and Oklahoma was bearing down on Arkansas, so we decided to leave Wednesday evening and drive about halfway.  We departed home around 5pm and arrived Dodge City around 1am, grabbing a hotel room at the Comfort Inn.  By running up to Joplin, then taking US-400 to Dodge City, we avoided all the rain that was quickly engulfing Oklahoma and heading toward Arkansas.

Thursday morning, we awoke halfway to Cripple Creek!  That would allow us to make a couple stops along the way.  Bent's Old Fort and The Royal Gorge were added to the day's agenda.

My navigator keeping me in line.

Our first stop was near La Junta Colorado at Bent's Old Fort (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bent's_Old_Fort_National_Historic_Site), an important trading post and stop along the Santa Fe Trail.  The fort stands on The Arkansas River at once was the border between Mexico and The United States.

After a too-short hour-long visit at the fort, we grabbed some fuel and food in La Junta, then journeyed on through Pueblo to Canon City and a stop at The Royal Gorge (http://royalgorgebridge.com/).  We arrived there around 4pm, so really just decided to look.  A trip back is in order, though.  Red wants to go down the incline railway to the river's edge, and she wants to do the zip line over the gorge!

From the gorge, we took CO-9 and CR-11 the back way into Cripple Creek.  In a thunderstorm.  Luckily, the only rain we'd see all weekend.

Friday Morning was cool and crisp.  A dramatic change from the heat and humidity we'd been seeing in NW Arkansas.

After some porch time with coffee and breakfast, we decided to drive the loop around to Victor and up to Cripple Creek for lunch.

Current and former remnants of the area's gold mining glory are everywhere.

The town of Cripple Creek had a population of around 10,000 in 1900, during mining's heyday, but has dwindled to about 1,100 today.  Back in the busy days, donkeys were used as pack animals.  As the population dwindled, owners turned donkeys out as they left town on the train.  Over time, Cripple Creek developed a herd of feral donkeys that occupies the town on surrounds.

Sunday morning around 4am, I came rumbling back into the campground after checking in at the finish line for the CC1000 at Double Eagle Casino in Cripple Creek.  I rested for a few hours, then we went back to the casino for the finisher's breakfast.

You can read about my CC1000 ride here:  http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=74520.0

After breakfast, we went back to the campground to hang out for awhile.  I needed the rest!  After a light lunch, we went back into town for a train ride.

Cripple Creek & Victor Railroad (http://cripplecreekrailroad.com/) is a 2-foot narrow gauge tourist road build on the road bed of the former standard gauge Midland Terminal Railway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Terminal_Railway).

Monday's plan was the Pikes Peak ride.  Unfortunately, the winds at 10am were 35mph with 51mph gusts, and I wasn't thrilled with the idea of riding up there in that wind.  In the mean time, we decided to get a group photo overlooking Cripple Creek with the remaining Guzzisti

At this point archangel, dxhall, and his two buddies decided to head on down to the Pikes Peak Highway and risk the wind.

Red, Tim, kirby1923, Guzzistajohn, and I stopped back by the campgound for a bit, then decided to check out Garden of the Gods in Manitou Springs first, before attempting The Peak.

Tim has the best of bad luck.  His Strada quit on him in the shade, under a bridge!  Hey, on a hot day, what better place to break down?  With the help of kirby1923, it was determined that the battery had crapped out, so Guzzistajohn and kirby1923 ran to the autoparts store for a replacement.

Soon enough, Tim's bike was running again, and we were headed up Pikes Peak!  Our goal for the day!

It's paved all the way to the top, now.  I think it's increased the traffic.  We say many street motorcycles, and lots of cars.  When I was on The Peak in 2009, it was still unpaved on the top 1/3.  There was a lot less traffic, and no other street motorcycles.  Still, it's a harrowing thrill ride to the top, and one of those things one just must do when in the Colorado Springs area!

The ride down was uneventful, and quite beautiful.  As the rider, I got to see a lot more going down than when going up.  Barricades and equipment was being set up for this week's Pikes Peak Hill Climb event.  Something I've always wanted to see, but have only enjoyed on television.

We rode in to Cripple Creek to Wildwood Casino for a good dinner, our final get-together of the weekend.

Upon returning to camp, I loaded up the bike and most of our gear, and after a nice visit with the guys, we hit the rack.  Tomorrow would come early, and it was a long drive home.

Tuesday morning, we departed about 7:30am and headed home.  US-24 to Limon.

Then I-70 to Salina, I-135 to Wichita, US-400 to Joplin, and I-49 back into NW Arkansas.  13-1/2 hours of driving, but we were home...  And looking forward to the next WildGuzzi Western Adventure, hopefully in June 2017 !!!

Rock, looks like you're getting along with the new Nikon,  Very nice photos.  Wish I could've made it for the trip (not the CC).   Bev is feeling better and I am hoping to travel west in another month or so.
