I have to rent a utility (Uhaul) trailer and haul both of my bikes to our new digs at the lake. I have used a single motorcycle trailer before. Just concerned about tieing down two bikes (1100 Breva & EV) side by side on the same trailer.
Any advice would be most helpful.
Thanks,
Dean

What are your concerns?

Have hauled a bunch of bikes side by side or three-abreast on flat trailers. No real worries, just make sure the front wheels are chocked and that there's a clear path from the handlebars to the tie-down points that doesn't put a bind on the other bike's parts as it passes through .....

I hauled two bikes in a Uhaul and it was tight but I also had lots of personal stuff that I packed around both bikes. Strapped the bikes to the side rails (no floor hooks) and nothing moved.

Rent 1 size bigger than you think you need?

Drive very fast; less time then for things to go wrong.

Those have lots of tie down points, should be no problem. I like to stick tires between the bikes if available. Transported all my bikes in a Uhaul from Anchorage and did just fine.

That is my theory on rain too. If you ride fast enough you aren't going to get very wet.
As for the move, fix the bikes and ride them.....

Well it looks like we might have some decent weather coming this weekend. If so will try to ride to the lake with Cindy as a chase car to bring me back here. It's supposed to be in the 50s Saturday and Sunday.

Funny you made that last update because when I read this thread I was thinking - "hey man, I just made a move like this last year, and I have FOUR bikes to move at the time. So I got my friends to ride them for me and I drove a chase vehicle to get them all home."

Hi Dean,
I trailer two bikes by chocking the front wheels with one a few feet ahead of the other to create room for handlebar clearance. Use 4 tie downs on each bike and they should not budge while going down the road. Don't leave anything loose that can flap in the wind and damage your paint.
-
That's a good trailer. I use a Canyon Dancer for the bars and locking wheel chock in front but you don't have to have these. I use four ratchet straps, two in front and two in back.
I also leave the sidestand down, lean the bikes slightly to the left, and leave the bikes in gear. My hope is if the straps got loose, it would fall to the stand side and they are much less likely to creep if locked in gear- probably an even better idea if you don't have a wheel chock. (I am sure you'll hear lots of arguments against this practice because of potential damage of the transmission or drivetrain. However, I always leave my manual cars in gear when I park them and I do that for my motorcycles too.)
-
1 long strap across the trailer at deck level, and looping around each of the bike's rear rims will keep the back ends from "walking" around. So will 2x4 cleats screwed to the deck if that's practical.
Hook a lightweight bungee cord from hook-to-hook on each of your tie-down straps to keep the hooks from dropping off if any slack develops (from drag-racing, going around corners, panic stops etc).

FYI -- Don't try to load it at the U-Haul Store. U-Haul insists that this trailer is for hauling only one motorcycle. You CAN fit two in there if they are not too wide and you use the space wisely (I have some friends who have done it), but don't let the U-Haul agent know that is your plan or they may refuse to rent to you.
Also, be aware that if you use the trailer for hauling two bikes and something goes wrong, U-Haul may deny liability for damage to your property, and may even hold you responsible for damage to their trailer. (Not to mention the possible liability exposure to third parties.)
Personally, I think this trailer is capable of hauling two moderately-sized motorcycles, but you should make your decision with full information.

Dean,
Per one of my posts last year when bringing home the Norge, bears repeating, my owners manual specifically cautions against leaving the bike in gear.....perhaps because it's a CARC? If so, I'd have to think the Breva would have the same warning.
As for the straps? Simp!y perfect, and they can not slip or pop off over a bump. I like the Canyon Dancers but they can & will stress your handle bars if you over do it, I crank just enough to tension only.

I never put bikes on the stands, centre or side when carting them. theyre best to be firmly held on the strops so the suspension soaks up the bumps

Well the EV is in the garage at the new house and the Breva 1100 will be there after tomorrow. Good day for a ride.

I agree. I also use a long tie down on the front right side, and I wrap the extra around the front brake lever and handlebar and cinch it tight. That keeps it from moving back and forth.

Both bikes are in the new garage now. Now if Cindy and I can get the movers here sometime soon my new address will be at the lake.

and leave the bikes in gear.
I've read of transmission damage doing that. Just saying. I've trailered a lot, and leave the bikes on their wheels, suspension at mid travel, out of gear. Never a problem.

Is this a permanent move Dean?

The last stop.
We've owned the property for about 30 years. It had a small cottage on it that we used to spend the summers in. We love the lake, we decided to tear down the cottage and build a new home there. I'll take some pics after we're all moved in. I think I showed some pics of the cottage in an old thread. It was just too small and really wasn't suitable for year round living. Cindy's Dad bought the place a long time ago. He hoped to stay there in the summer and winter in Florida.

I hit an unusually rough RR crossing when towing once. At the next stop I noticed one of the ratchet straps was not connected. I duct tape the "S" hooks closed now.
Your winter in Florida and Summer up in the mountains idea is a viable plan. There has to be an additional 10 million peeps on that plan clogging up the roads down here right now.

Sorry, you have confused the situation, that was my father in law who was planning to that.
We lived in the Sarasota area for fifteen years and have NO desire to go back.

Well at least the stressful part is done......
Glad to hear you got it handled.

Well we finally got the MOVE finished last weekend. The moving truck got stuck in the snow on Saturday and didn't get unloaded until Tuesday. They had an 18 year old driving the moving truck and he panicked in one of the curves on the private road coming in here. It has been a HELL getting here but it was worth it.
The yard is a mess no grass yet and all mud but I will post pics later.
