Title: Thoughts on Painting an Eldorado.
Post by: eldoguzzi on February 07, 2015, 02:25:58 PM
I figured I would get some feedback here. I am considering repainting my 72 Eldorado. It has the original paint on all the bodywork. It's really in pretty descent shape for 43 years old. I'm kinda torn about covering it. But I intend to keep the machine. Had it 20 years already and will pass it down when I get to old to keep my balance anymore.  :beat_horse
So I am just looking for some of your thoughts on this issue. It is certainly a controversial topic. Have at it.

Agreed. I sure wouldn't repaint it if the original paint and pinstriping still looks good.

Absolutely. Antiques are only original once, but that's how *I* feel.  ;D YMMV.

Polish and wax it.

Swap body parts with me.  ;D

Then you can have a new paint job and I can have an old paint job with chrome inserts in good condition.

Mine has been repainted over the chrome inserts ,which you would get re-chromed anyway and repainted.

My tank, etc. are in near perfect  condition...Alan

Original paint says "I've been around the block a few times kid, and have I got some stories for you!"  :bike
(Also, it is warm and inviting.)
..Would love some photos!

I'd wax her, maybe touch up the pinstripes, find an original seat and get rid of the fishtails. my 2 cents.

Are you nuts?  Nothing but soap and water should touch that bike. That's absolutely gorgeous.

Turin's points exactly.

That's a nice bike Eldo, you probably know this but be real careful with what polishes you use, any type of a cutting agent could remove the rest of your striping.
Looks very respectable as it is, just needs a good clean  ;)

Perfect as is!  I wouldn't even get rid of the fishtails (ghastly as I think they are) because they are part of her evolution.  The handlebars - now that's another matter. I'd have those off in a trice.
Change fluids - ride.

Trade your wife in but step away with the paintbrush.

Alright alright, I got what I was looking for. Thank you all. As far as the fishtails, they are staying and so are the bars. I like the old bagger style and it fit's me right. I do have original seat. Had this solo saddle recovered many years ago and I like how it fits too. Sure it's a Harley seat but WTH. It's all about riding. If I ever end up doing a full resto on it, well then I'll deal with it.

Where's the picture?
I touched up my white pinstripes with a tiny brush.  Duplicolor black spray paint match perfectly to touch up scars.  I then overcoated with clear and wetsanded/polished.

Do the "fishtails" have any sort of baffling or are they straight through, no baffles? If the latter, they're not exactly optimum for proper running. Mac fishtails would be an improvement.

I sure like it the way it is . If you paint it would be like saying goodbye to an old friend . There is a soul in there and it shines through brilliantly .

Amen to that. Shiny repaint is not as cool as faded original.

Allright, enough of this suspender snappin' diatribe!  Matte black base, gold leaf and flake flames on the bags, skulls and women everywhere else available space allows and don't
foget the obligatory "Flying Eyeball" VonDutch homage. There, start sanding.... ~;

Yeah, compound and wax. My eldo had lived next to the bay in Sausalito, by the houseboat crowd at Gate 5, and had been done with an aquamarine color marine enamel with a paintbrush.
