Title: Lewiston's "Spiral Highway"
Post by: Sheepdog on February 08, 2015, 09:22:31 AM
Stelvio West! This descent on the Spiral Highway is recorded at 4X speed.  Notice how light the traffic is on this Lewiston, Idaho treasure...

South of me .  Ridden it many times.  Very seldom any traffic as it is the old road.  Quite a workout when I last did it on my sidecar.  My wife only screamed a couple times.

Awesome road.
First time I rode it, I didn't know what the coming road was like. I was touring kind of randomly on the Spot 1100 heading North out of Enterprise and the road all of the sudden just dropped off the edge of the plateau. Lots of fun!

Rode it last September. You do have some beautiful roads down there.

Wonder why they call it the "Spiral Highway"?   Looks to me like it switches back and forth just like any other mountain road.

I'm sure it's a lovely ride in any case ....

Reminds me of a bobsled speeding down the track.

Also nice that the Powers-that-be allowed a number of passing (broken yellow) zones.
Here in the East once you get behind drivers from the Antidestination League, laws must be broken on the twisties.

Have been on it several times on a bike, but most memorable was in a Dodge Sprinter. Had my boss with me and we squealed the tires and smoked the brakes. Good times!

Looks like a very nice ride. And I thought we (SoCal) had a monopoly on all the best roads. ;)

Hi, Mike!  ;D Idaho rox.. too.  ;) Quite a few less people there, to boot.
Hard to beat the California canyons, though. ;-T

You guys need to attend the Okie camp out . No traffic , and hard to explain how GREAT the roads are .

  Dusty

I'm going to make an effort, but will just have come back from California in April. Logistics may or may not work out.

This is a future destination for me (my daughter, S-in-L, and granddaughter live in Lewiston), so I have not ridden this road yet. However, from the maps in the area it indicates that it is simply called "The Old Spiral Highway" and is situated between US95 and ID128.

I did that last year, Rattlesnake canyon in the same area is also very nice I did that twice it was so good.

According to the signs the Spiral Highway was a wagon route.

not too far southeast of this highway is another Spiral Highway that you might want to try; The White Bird in Idaho.

It was built by convict labor using shovels; it's long been bypassed as a highway.

I've not managed to capture it too well in a photograph:

I've had some of my best riding days on Idaho95 incredibly diverse and uncrowded. I usually try to get Spiral and White Bird in the same afternoon.....OK thanks now you REALLY got me anticipating summer!!!

So much, I wrote a little ditty on that very anticipation!

I've been in that area on 12 LOLO pass. So what is the number for that road? Is that the 95 that branch off of 12?
It's now a county road. You access it at the top off Highway 95 via a scenic view exit. From the bottom, if you are entering Lewiston on 12/95, take a right just as you enter town and before you cross the Clearwater River. There's a rose garden and giant American flag just beyond the turnoff. Access to the bottom of the Spiral Highway is a mile or so after the turnoff. Sheriff's department is opposite the entrance to the twisted so watch your speed until you get up the hill a bit.
If you're hungry, hit the Lunch Box cafe between the bottom of the hill and 12/95. Not fancy but good soup and sandwiches.
Any of you folks in the area, please pm me and we can get together for a beverage.

The Spiral Highway is one of the great roads in America. There are other roads its equal but none I know of that's consistently better.

Let me recommend 180 in Kings Canyon national park/Sequoia national park. Starts in low country North and East of Visalia,Ca. goes to the top of the Sierra Nevadas, and back down. It's a spectacular road with very few straights, smooth pavement.  ;-T

MY kind of MC road, reminds me of Nevada 266 from 95 west to 168 to Big Pine just north of Death Valley, or 25 from Hollister to Coalinga. You guys who have yet to ride out West don't know what you're missing.
