If you inherit one, please ship the ugly thing to me. I love the SPIII!
-
It's the last incarnation of the Spada, kind of the forerunner of the Norge. I've never thought of it as rare, but then I thought Converts were common too, so what do I know?
-
It's a SP3
-
Always think of the Hesketh Vampire when I see these Guzzi's.
I like it

I think it's a pretty cool looking bike. Certainly no Honda PC. They're supposed to have a pretty solid rep in comparison with the BMW RTs of the same era.

Let me get in line. LeMans chassis, medium valve engine. You *do* have to be properly sized, though.

I've always like the SPIII. It's a STRADA (street) with fairing. There's a dude here in Springpatch that has one.

Chuck nailed it!
I have one and I am just under 6'1" and it is my daily rider in the cooler months and wet weather. I can ride max 2 hours before I need a rest which is perfect.
I rebuilt mine from the last nut and bolt to run in the Danish winter and not be a rust bucket. So far it's working.
Motor is great! Loves to rev and is especially good from 3700 up to 7000 RPM. I have a full Mistral exhaust system on it.
Front forks are ok after being serviced and very particular about how much lube oil (50-60ml NO MORE!!!) and the weight (ATF fluid). Check Chuck's Spada thread for re-build and parts info.
Valtek timing chain tensioner is a must.
I fitted bobbin style coils with ZDG3 electronic ignition, iridium plugs, larger alternator, Oxford heated grips and dedicated start relay. Starts first time, every time 😁
I run a 130/80 tyre on the rear and a 110/80 on the front and handling is excellent.
Search it here and almost everyone that owned it wish they still had it.
They are rare! Why? Only approx. 912 were built and many have been scrapped or chopped up for projects.

Adam

Thanks for the review Adam. Never heard of a rider's take on this bike - only seen it in books.

NZD=.75 USD

7500 nzd x 0.75 = 5,625 usd
still a little optimistic to me but i am not familiar with motorcycles values in NZ.

Around '94 or so a group of us rode from Michigan to Joe Eish's shop in Ohio to pick one up. The new owner rode double on a CalIII. He was moving up from a T-5 and the SP-III was a wonderful bike for him, even at about 6'4". Years later I heard that he was still riding the wheels off of it.
The dash was the same used in the Cal III Touring but beyond that it was pretty much a Mille with Givis and a full sport fairing. Comparable to the BMW R100RS.

Fay and I went up to PA to buy a perfect SPIII once, it would have been an ideal Guzzi for us. Had the money in pocket, planned on me riding it home.
We rode it and we almost cried. Beautiful running bike, but I couldn't get my knees behind the fairing. If I slid far enough back to get my knees behind it, it was a stretch to the bars and I was pushing Fay off the back of the seat. There's no way to fix that problem, given the frame size and cylinder location ...
Got the Stelvio instead ...... But have always wanted one.

need to have Charles Atlas muscles to hold the throttle. :winer

Easily fixed. Softer carb springs are available.

I had an 93? SPIII, basically the same bike as my 93-1000S so it was easy. Yes, hard to get your knee's behind the fairing so mine just stuck out there in the wind. It gets hot for the rider when the temps go up, some turbulence as one would expect with that screen but other than that it was a good bike and I only sold it to buy a Norge. Wife hated the seating position as she was always sliding into me on even the mildest braking so proceed with caution if your thinking of a two up ride. Tubeless rims(wish I had taken them for the 1000S) which is cool. Down side: don't drop the bike because all of that plastic is unobtainable unless you want to find another SPIII as a back up. Digiplex ignition, but I never had a problem.
