Title: Your first bike and the one that got away.
Post by: guzziv7fan on February 20, 2015, 10:27:59 AM
305 Honda dream, paid 100 bucks for it.

Can't remember the year, it was red with those curved fenders. Had a blast on that thing.

1978 Kawasaki Z1R, Sold it to buy new baby junk. My mother laid some guilt trip on me at the time.

I dream about that bike sometimes.

One that got away....1975 Honda CB400F......loved that bike.....hated the ex wife that forced the sale

First bike, early 70's Yamaha DT100 when I was 14.   Parents made me sell it when I got caught riding it on the street.   I was 14 -- no license, oh, and no helment (no brain either, apparently).

One that got a way -- none yet, but, since I didn't starting street riding until a few years ago, I do regret having lost the opportunity to enjoy motorcycles for the 25 year of my adult life that I didn't ride.   I'm making up for lost time now.   ;D

Jas, the DT100 makes a pretty good street bike.  Here's a photo for you, taken last year:

!st bike 1962 Duo Glide dresser.
The one that got away.... not a full blown got away but a story worth mentioning. I had a 1972 Ducati (in other posts I might have wrong said it was a 73) GT 750.
There was a 73 750 SS green Desmo on the floor in a shop in St. Louis.  I forgot now the price. I was struggling financially but wanted it bad. So I was minus $2K with my bike included.  I must gone in that shop in St. Louis over a dozen times (I lived 100 miles away) to look at and talk to the owner about it.   Did it get way..... ah not quite but I lusted/coveted after it for many a months.  I guess in the end I could have killed myself to find a way to raise the $ but it did not come to be. I might not have told this story on most bikes but we all know how special that 73 green 750SS Ducati Desmo is.
The one that got away I guess you could say is the 72 Ducati 750 GT. I sold it in 91 for $750 to help fund my new red Mille. I was fresh off a divorce and lost a bit of chump change on the way out.  Some of the guys at the Sunday breakfast said don't sell the Duck: keep both they said.
The must have seen the round case bubble coming.

Honda Magna 750 was the first bike.  Nice engine in that one.
The one that I had that I regret losing would be the carb Sport 1100.  But the bike that I had a just about done deal on that I regret it getting away was a Ducati ST4s ABS that I was trading for - the new bike was damaged in shipping and I sold the old bike.  I still look for those bikes online - maybe if there's a perfect one cheap...

The one that got away: the one in my avatar (a testament to my mistake): 2000 Buell S3; it's still in the family, though: my brother-in-law owns it, but he doesn't ride it and he won't sell it back to me. >:(

First bike, 350 CL Honda - wish I still had it just for sentimental reasons.

Not really the one that got away, but at Sonny Angel's shop in the eighties I remember looking at a new California (?) and thinking " Why would I ever want something like that ? "

Mini Bike (ca 1965ish) built from Electric Minibike frame and 3.5 B&S pump motor liberated from a local construction site.  What can I say - I was 12yo.

First bike with a clutch AND a transmission - 1966 Honda Benley - 150cc.  Rode this for two years before I was old enough to get my drivers permit.

The one that got away - none yet.

First bike was an '82 Kawasaki KZ550.

Never had one get away.  I've pretty much been "done" with the bikes I've sold.  That said, I miss my '91 K75C that was totalled in a mishap with a BDC.  I would have kept that one for quite a while.

Best,

My first ride was actually a Montgomery Ward mini-bike with a 5hp Tecumseh.  I was 4yrs old when my dad taught me how to ride it.  About a year later I graduated to my brother and sister's '71 Benelli 65cc mini bike.

The one that got away?.. My '92 Gixxer 1100. (Red and black tiger stripe).  It was my first ever "brand new" vehicle.  Man, what a powerhouse.  Sold it to an old boss of mine around 03.  I needed the money for a car project at the time.  He still has it, and I remind him every time I see him, "If you ever decide to sell it, please let me know".

One I should have bought-a Metralla 250, all original, decent and running, I offered $500, seller said no but called me a week later-and I turned him down.

He called me a week later to brag how he sold it for $1500. About 2 years later it was worth $4000, should be a bit more now

First bike, looking for economical transportation and knew diddly squat about mechanical abilities....so bought a new Yamaha 250 TD1 twin, 4 spd in 1962?  Now extremely rare but at the time that was the last thing on my mind.  It was black/chrome and looked like a small HD dresser.  Top speed was 85 mph, pre mix, and the thing was bullet proof!   Back then I thought all new bikes were bullet proof.   But I was 20 and had a need for more speed and lived with my parents in soCal and when I got an apartment a few months later to be on my own, the last thing on my mind was to keep any transportation for longer than using it to get around.  :'(   Hindsight now...........Yamah a would probably pay me a bundle to get it it's so rare.   Even if they didn't it would still be worth riding around.  :'(   Rode Yamahas for 20 years before I got hooked on Guzzis.

My first real motorcycle after the mini bikes and trail type stuff was a 1966 Yamaha YDS3 250 two-smoke...  a steady succession of a dozen Triumphs followed, Pre-Units and Pre-'70 Units.

The one that I should never, never, never have left my possession was a '76 Triumph Trident T-160.  I will never forget that motorcycle, I truly loved that rig and I mourn that Trident every time the subject comes up.

I will find another...

1956 T110 Triumph, and had been "chopped".  Traded a Minolta camera for it to a Marine buddy right before I got out, '72.  Only thing it would run on without pinging bad was Sunoco 260.  Tore it down a couple years later and it had high dome 12 to1 C.R. pistons.  Always had to kick start it like I meant it, but it ran like stink.

73 Honda 450 bought brand new in the middle of winter. Rode it home in the snow without ever riding a real motorcycle before. A miracle in itself. One that got away, 75 BMW 750/6. Bought new for just over $3000. Rode it everywhere. Full windjammer with the ol cycle sound along with a CB radio. Had it for 10 years.  Best money I ever spent. 😤

My first one was a 77 Suzuki GS400 which I bought in 1979 with 5K miles for $800. Rode it until I bought the T-3. It was a hoot in the Ozarks  after improving the suspension. It was good till the end when I sold it to a jerk boss that fired me a few weeks later because he offered me to much to turn down and the motor then let loose on him shortly after firing me. ;D

"Crazy low price for that bike. That had to be a mistake?"

Young guy inherited it from his grandad and didn't know what it was. First guy showed up without the cash and then some of the young guy's friends told him he wasn't asking enough. Once he understood what it was, he decided to get an MC license and keep it in his family which is fine. Had I been there first, it would be in my garage.

First motorcycle:  1972 Kawasaki H2, bought used in 1978, still ride it.
One that got away:  None, I seldom sell anything   :D

clean 1972 Kawasaki H2 purchased in 1982 for $400. It's also the one that got away.  I sold it for $200 the next year to a friend to get him on a bike while I  "upgraded" to a Yamaha Special. (pig of a bike that was more civilized than the H2 and tolerable once I binned the stock pullback bars for a superbike bend.) Adding insult to injury, my buddy only ever paid me $100 of the $200 he owed me. At least I had someone to ride with I guess.

They are still available at good prices.  I have owned four of them, still have one and my Daughter still has the first one I owned and gave to her years ago.

Just a nice handling mid sized, back road burner.

Some folks prefer the SVs but to me it is a Honda thing, I started with them and actually had an SV for a bit but sold it and remain loyal to the RC31.

We like 'em.

Best,

One I wish I still had: Honda 500/4, which I tricked out with the full Dunstall kit in 1973. I don't think there was another cafe racer in New York at the time. Rode that thing on every twisty two-lane from West Virginia to Montreal to Rochester to Cape Cod.

Seth,
Where did you own this Dunstall Honda...?

A friend back in Maine, Mark bought a Dunstall 500/4 from a local fellow replete in that gorgeous Dunstall Red bodywork, I am not certain whether he took it down to restore or the person he bought it from did.

Mark lost interest in the project and then sold the Dunstall to another friend, Eric in a town fifty miles away in pieces and then the new owner asked if I would put it back together.  Sure thing but I needed a few parts and Dunstall parts were hard to come by.  The seat and rear cowl were there as was the fairing and tank, the fender needed repair and the seat hinges, mounts, side covers and fairing screen did not exist.

Over the course of a few months I collected some items to proceed with the restoration and the new owner was a little Time dragged on and the Honda left my place without the project progressing very far, Eric did not want to invest much into the Dunstall. so he sold it unfinished..

Another person in Portland ended up with it and I lost track of it.  At an Owls Head Transportation Museum M/C Show yet another fellow rider in the area, Bill, asked if I knew where the thing was as he had owned in so many years ago and wanted it back... crazy.

As far as I know, Bill has it back and is making an attempt at reassembly.

Eric tells that the locals call the Dunstall the Ping Pong Honda as so many people, more than I cite here had owned it... LOL

I'll see if I can get an update on it...

The Dunstalls of the time were and are very distinctive lookers.

Best,
Rob

First was a Honda S-90, the one that got away?  Well, had a Vincent  (it wasn't  a Lightening)still in its crate offered to me for $3500. back in 1970 but we replaced my wife's car instead. (We got her a Sunbeam Alpine Coupe Grey with Red leather) Oh well.

Hey Trippah, I let a Vincent go in Sydney back in the 80's, asking price was 12k then. Vincent's sell for 80 to 100 K here at the moment  ::)
1st bike was a Honda 500/4 Black with Gold pin striping. It had a 4 into 1 pipe, turned petrol into noise and didn't go that fast, but it was a great learners bike  :)

A Suzuki 2 stroke, a 280? Never registered, no title, rode it around my college town then sold it.
Sold the SRX-6 I bought new and always regretted it, found a nice one 5 years later but had to drive 1200 miles to get it.

I see your SXR-6 is up for sale.   So, was it not the bike you remember and regret selling?

clean 1972 Kawasaki H2 purchased in 1982 for $400.

I paid $750 for mine in '78, and a year or so later picked up later '72 with a bunch of parts, for $700.  By the late '70s the dealers in the DC area weren't putting much effort into stocking parts for triples.  They were putting a lot of effort into trying to sell the new 4-stroke bikes.  Buying the 2nd H2 was to get parts for the long run.  It worked, but now I'd like to get it on the road too, and since I never bothered to get it titled and lost whatever paperwork I got with it, I'll have to get a bonded title.

You got in at just the right time, because triples became just a bunch of obsolete old junkers and hit their all time low prices in the '80 and maybe the '90s before they became collector's items and started rising again.  Now a "correctly" restored H2 or early H1 often brings prices in the mid teens, and in Europe near $20,000.

(http://Where did you own this Dunstall Honda...?)

I bought the Honda, used and in stock condition, when I arrived in Manhattan in 1972.  The Dunstall kit went on in '73 for an article I did in Supercycle magazine. The original glass was Dunstall yellow, really a gel coat rather than actual paint. The following year I mounted Lester mags and Marzocchi fork dampers, and painted it red and black with white pinstriping. Rode it for ten years, through a top-end rebuild. Last mod was a four-into-one exhaust. Over the years the glass took a beating -- it was mat-and-chop-spray work rather than a good cloth layup, so it suffered vibration cracking at the mounting points. I did a lot of patching, reinforcing the mounting points with aluminum plate, and of course a lot of repainting. The truth is it was crude heavy stuff compared to the beautiful light glass on factory bikes, for instance, Ducati's 750SS.

In '82 I acquired a Laverda barn find and that was a third bike (counting the TA-125) and I didn't have room in the garage under my city apartment building. The Honda was getting loose and needed another set of pistons/rings, so I trucked it out to a cousin's place in Jersey, meaning to revisit it eventually. Years passed, I traded the Laverda for my T, moved to Truckee, got married, had a kid. My cousin built a big house and moved and lost track of a whole garage full of old stuff, including the Honda. My guess is someone parted it out years ago.

The best story about the Honda is that shortly after installing the Lesters I had the bike parked in front of my apartment on East 62nd St, and came home to find half a dozen Japanese gentlemen in business suits gathered around it. They were Honda marketing executives and had a lot of questions about the bike -- only one of them spoke English and they kept him busy for half an hour. I didn't think much about it for a few years and then in 77-78 CB Hondas started coming through with Dunstall-inspired tank and seat shapes. I'd like to think my encounter got Honda thinking there might be a US market for cafe styling.

My first bike was a Suzuki GT 250.  It was a fun bike although I was told I looked like a monkey ----ing a football while riding it.  It took me deep into Eastern Mexico one summer with no problems.

My first bike was a 79 Yamaha 250 4 stroke dirt bike , then I traded in my 04 750 breva for an 03 California Stone , but didn't know about the clutch issues and its sitting in the barn , till I figure out the best and most affordable option to fixing it . Can't wait to ride again I really like the stone it rode really nice .
