Title: What's on your 2015 Radar??? Let's talk rides.
Post by: Luap McKeever on February 23, 2015, 06:00:29 PM
Winter time.  We've all seen the complaints (so and so is ignoring me, so and so made threats to me, this dealer sucks, my oil is better, etc etc).  I can always tell with winter time comes because the board gets pegged with everything.  Hack attempts and everything else in between, as evidenced by the 80-95% cpu usage at just about any given time ;D.  I suspect it's because more folks are riding their keyboards and not their motorcycles.  Except for the lucky few who live in motorcycle friendly climates.

Anyways, I thought I'd spark up some ride conversation to see what your plans are this year....?  I've been basically grounded the past year due to injury and lots of work. I hope to remedy that problem this year.

Me, here's what I'd 'like' to do this year.
* local charity runs...ALL of them
* Cedar Vale, KS not a rally
* Louisiana rally
* Council Grove, KS campout
* Mo-Kan rally
* Italy, TX
* Oklahoma campout

I used to knock off about 30K per year riding.  I've maybe averaged 2K per year for going on 5 years in a row now.  I have to fix that  ;-T

Ok, I'll play.  ;D
I'd *like* to do Cedar Vale. We'll just be getting back from California, so I won't know until the last minute.
I will do the Ill a noise rally. Dorcia doesn't like that one, too many bugs, nowhere to ride that we haven't been, always rains..  :beat_horse so I'll be solo. Hey! Free beer is not to be denied. Along with the wonderful food, of course.
We'll do the National. Looks like we'll take the van to Maine, hang out with Rolf, catch and eat lobsters, meet up with the Kid, etc. and ride to the rally. Rolf, too.  ;-T
Maybe Iowa. I could hang out with the Kid some more.
Wouldn't miss Wisconsin, maybe the best rally year after year. Besides that, the Kid lives in Wisconsin. Gives us another excuse to hang out and drink beer.  ;D
Gotta go to Kentucky. Bourbon, man.. ;D
With any luck, I'll manage another NAR in California.
That's all that is on the schedule as we speak.

I'm hoping to:

1) Open the season with the April "Eurobike Day" in Raleigh NC with Fay on the Stelvio, 250 miles or so.

2) Annual BritBike "Three State Mountain Ride" in Blowing Rock NC, riding the BSA A10 or the Norton with Fay.   1000 mile weekend.

3) The National Guzzi Rally in Massachusetts on the Stelvio, just me.   'Bout a 2000 mile week depending on how much riding I do up there.

4) The Virginia Guzzi Rally on the Stelvio, just me.   'Bout a 500 mile weekend depending how I go.

5) Mid Ohio Vintage Days on one of the bikes, whichever's running good.    1200 mile total, about.

6) Ohio Valley BSA Owner's Club Rally on the Firebird or the A10, just me.   1000 mile 4-day weekend.

7) MD/DC Guzzi Rally on the SP or Stelvio, just me, 'bout a 500 mile weekend depending on the riding we do while we're there.

And any others that may occur to me in the meantime, but those are the ones I try not to miss ......

Recommend you consider fine-tuning those national plans.

You are one state off.   ;D

OKAY.  Between undetermined spontaneous rides, 2, no more than 4, of us will be coming down from Montana stopping at every National Park, Monument and Civil War battlefield, site etc. reasonably possible on the way to the Triumph Superbike races at Barber MSP in Leeds Alabama.  [Hence, out little 'Barber Civil War Tour.'] Too bad the MGNOC meet is on the same weekend.  But, as we later loop north and head back west, I'm sure we'll see some of use guys on the road.

Well, you know, those states up there are so little, you can be off a whole state and not miss your ETA by an hour or so.

This fall, I'm off to Austria to see the kangaroos .....

Well, this year I have enough vacation time accumulated to go back to the Luap gathering. But that is out. Bummer......  :(

I will do the usual, the NC rally at Cruso.
Of course the Georgia campout. BTW, I think the campground owners have more experience and we can start growing again.
I may try to do the Ohio or Pipestem West Virginia rally.
My main event, (though I haven't looked closely at the maps and calendar), is to go to the National, via the Blue Ridge parkway. Then find a place to veg out for a few days near Vermont/Maine/Canada. Then head home, stopping at the Virginia rally the next week. That should be about 4000 miles.

Of course it all relies on me using the right oil.    :beat_horse

Hey Spud, as long as you're passing through you might want to allow some battlefield time Ozark style.

I was sort of thinking that until I looked at riding to the northern tip of Maine just fer grins.
That is going to be a long haul.

I intend to right a wrong this year. I moved from the midwest to northern Nevada 12 years ago but have not done more than a 4 day ride. This summer I will do a 10 day ride, not sure where, San Juan Plateau or Idaho and Yellowstone.

I was basing my impression from the experience of flying into Providence, RI one time, aiming for Marlborough, MA, and went through three states in my rental car before I found where I was going.   But I didn't even miss my meeting.

Maine does look big, though.   We followed some of the coast on the way to Bar Harbor year before last (en route to Nova Scotia on the Stelvio), rode hundreds of miles, and didn't make any progress north!   Lovely scenery I must say.

gosh...I hate to say it but my plans go up in smoke as soon as I write them down.

So here goes:

1.  Ride to Moto GP at COTA in April and continue to Hill Country.
2.  Take the trailer to Dusty's at Cedar Vale.
3.  Take the trailer to National in New Hampshire (via Indy 500 on the way) in Jun
4.  Take the trailer to Grand Marais, Minnesota Rally on the way home
5.  Maybe ride to Du Quoin Mile (more likely a car trip to Colorado) in July
6.  Ride to Springfield Mile Labor Day and continue to
7.  Ride to Spineframe Rally at Telico Planes, TN the following weekend
8.  Maybe go to Okla Rally if I am sick of college football (which I am already)

No plans for Daytona or Barber Vintage Days

Hope to ride thhru Cedarvale on my way to Arkansas. If weather doesn't allpw, I will postpone Arkansas til the  Council Grove weekend. For the last 4  years, we have stashed the bike in Ark in the late spring, flown bck to Seattle until  fall, then returned to AR for a fall ride home to Seattle. During the summer we will be old school on the Eldo or Cal II to Deep Forest and maybe the Colorado thing.

I worship the roads you ride on, and your motivation, and priorities and stamina...... not worthy, not worthy.... :bow :bow

My buddy Mitch and I are talking about riding to COTA in Austin, TX this year.

Still want to ride to Bulverde and slum with BIL.  More motivation since nephew has new Yamaha triple to try out.

Concluded I can do a 200 mile day in decent weather.  I could probably do 300 miles if I really paced myself and had plenty of Advil.

Entire concept of work and vacation could do a warp-shift to the retirement universe in the coming months.  If so, new ball game.
A trailer and a SUV could open worlds up:  no motorcycle long waltzes across TEXAS to get to NM, CO, etc.

I'm riding from the BC Interior to Lead, South Dakota this year to visit the mining museum and see what I can learn. My grampa worked there as a miner around 1900 before homesteading in northern Alberta. After reading his 5 year diary, I got interested in backtracking his route a ways.

Thanks for the reminder Lannis. I just went over to their website and signed up for early registration. I wanted to get a good parking spot and a T shirt, so hope to see you there again this year. I plan to ride the Eldo, but if not then probably the SP again. Don't know where else I'll be riding to this year. I have some dual sport stuff on my calendar, but the Ohio Rally will almost be a fer sure.

My turn, My turn!!!!
1) I hope to begin riding by April 1 and finish after October 15. A nice long season.
2) I will ride a circle route from home to Fairbanks, Anchorage and back at least once.
2a) I will make the Skagway and Haines runs 2 times each.
3) I promise myself to ride as far south as I can reach in 3 days and return 5 days later; maybe Calgary/Kamloops/Chilliwack/home.
4) I promise myself to avoid bear, moose, bison, deer, cagers and other denizen on these trips.

Late March or Early April, Wife and I to the Texas Hill Country. Approx 1750 miles in the week.
About a half dozen 3/4 day weekends to Arkansas/Missouri from April to October. Wife usually tags along on all of them (She is actually the instigator for these trips).  Average anywhere from 500 miles up to 1500, depending on the riders.
July or August trip to circle Colorado or BPR, with 2 or 3 of my work riding buddies. Haven't made up our minds yet.  2500 to 3000 miles.
Really want to do the Labor Day Mile trip with John, John, and Doug again.  Great fun last year.
Scatter another half dozen over night trips with the wife in for good measure.

Nova Scotia for sure, would like to check out Newfoundland if time permits. Have never found myself to far north in summer, although south is looking real good right now. Would love to make a rally for a week end too.

Gander, NL has been on my bucket list for several years. I'm told I have family there and my daughter in law was born in Corner Brook.   Stopped for fuel a few times on my way to Scotland but never got out of the airport.  Our first attempt by motorcycle was in 1986 on an R90/6 pulling a trailer.  Made it as far as Saguenay, QC, about 100 miles north of Québec City, in 1986.  Just no way to get there without back tracking south across the Saint Lawrence River.  Said the "hell with it" and went home.  Just didn't have enough time.  Canada is a really big place and doesn't have all that many roads.

Last Fall was my latest attempt.  My son in law and I made it as far as Saint John, NB and once again distance and time got us.  We agreed only county and state roads.  No US highways or Interstates. We allowed about five weeks for the trip and ran out of time.  I was planning on a family event in WV and by the time we got to Saint John we only had two weeks left.  Could have made it but no time to visit.  Plan is to continue this Spring departing around the last of May.

Now, due to unresolved health issues, that ride may be in doubt.

A few pictures from last Falls ride.
Some where is Vermont  we were at a Dunkin Donut and I was over heard wining about no Starbucks.

We said goodbye in VA.  Kim returned to TX and I went to the old home place in WV where I helped peel apples for apple butter.

This machine was build in 1910.  The company is still in business in NY and parts are available.  This machine has peeled a lot of apples.  I can only wonder how many fingers it has eaten.

My plans are firming up a bit, about one event a month --
  * Cedar Vale NAR (weather dependent), 4/17-19, 1500 miles
  * European Riders Rally, Burkesville, KY, 5/14-17, 450 miles
  * MN Rally, Grand Marias, MN, 6/26-28, via Fort Collins, CO, 4000 miles
  * IA Rally, Elkader, IA, 7/10-12, 1200 miles
  * WI Rally, Lake Joy, WI, 7/31-8/2, 1000 miles
  * MI Rally, Traverse City, MI, 9/11-13, 1400 miles
  * KY Rally -- Don't know the dates but hope to be able to attend, 500 miles
  * Beemer Falling Leaf Rally, Potosi, MO, 10/8-11, 1100 miles
  * Swampscooter's Rally in LA -- 11/5-8, 2000 miles

Ride safe out there.

For sure, we Guzzisti can't complain that "There's nothing 'round here to DO!".

Here we've both got a full rally schedule for the year, and our paths don't appear to cross once ....  :(   !

Central WV as many time as possible. I would really like to ride PA 220 from the northern PA border to its end in WV then loop over to WV 220 and head north back into PA

I never tire of WV, so if you would (and don't mind me tagging along), keep me informed of when you head down that way. Been exploring WV since I bought my first Guzzi in '84, so I know a few good places to stay, eat and see along with lots of interesting roads.

If you can get away Memorial Day weekend, come down to Cass with me and we'll ride the National forests.

My list is close to this one, but with only about half the planned destinations.  I'd like to do Illinois in May, Minnesota in June, Iowa and Wisconsin in July and Michigan in September.  Throw in the occasional weirdo coffee shop in Milwaukee and favorite Greek restaurant near by, and that should pretty much do it.

I'll be riding up to Minneapolis in May to meet up with my youngest son, and we'll head over to Indianapolis for the 500.  Back to Minneapolis, then I'll be heading out to Seattle to meet up with my oldest, and from there we'll be off to Ephrata for some sailplane flying.  Then back to Houston, route to be determined.  I may plan that around taking in some minor league baseball games each night if possible.

Ride for Kids in Houston in April.

Charity ride for the A. Fern Norville home in Kaufman TX during the summer, which doubles as a mini Guzzi rally with Tex, Beaver, Chris and a couple of others.

Plenty of rides around the Hill Country in search of BBQ heaven.

Did you mean Guzzi's in Adirondack's? What are the specifics? I don't see that on the Rally Schedule.

I want to tow my sidecar to some eastern hilly terrain and do day trips out of a campground or cheap motel.  I  might look to swap the Sportster for a pair of 250 dual sports for the same scheme, and have a spare bike for family or friend to ride along with me. Gotta get my grandson in that sidecar before he's too "cool" to enjoy it.

Well, dunno.

The national, certainly.  The Virginia, probably,  Depends on how long we stay up in New England, or if we return via Erie.  Might drop off Kathi and the Norge at home and take the EV or Griso south.

Then, the South’n Spine Raid ,of course, too.  11 - 13 Sep 15.  See http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18379.

But, on a more “it’s all about the journey” sort of rides, have been meaning to do a bit of “Thanking My Ancestors” set of small tours.

I realized the other day that 2016 is the tricentennial of the death of the first (American) Hagan — Thomas, 1645 - 1716 — who arrived in Annapolis as an indentured servant in 1662.

So, I thought it might be an appropriate exercise this year to see some of the places that meant much to him and those early Hagans.

I’ll do a day (or two) ride from Annapolis over to and in and around Charles County (Bryantown, especially).

Next, I’ll ride over to Winchester, Virginia.  Yup.  Where I live now is less than 10 miles cross-country from where Thomas’s grandson got a land grant of about 350 acres from Lord Fairfax.  Trying to find the exact location; would like to buy a few of those “just ‘cause.”  This James’s son, my (gggg) grandfather, was born “here,” but returned to the Bryantown area at the start of the Revolutionary War.

He first served in the Charles County (Maryland) Militia.  As a retired regular and the son of same, it gives me some pain to admit having had an ancestor even remotely associated with what came to be the National Guard.  Sigh.   ;)

Anyway, seeing the light, James enlisted as a private in 1776 in the 4th Regiment (Maryland) of the Continental Line — a Regular at last! — and later transferred to the Second Maryland Regiment.  He served from 1776 to August 1783, and (at least) fought in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Camden, Guilford Courthouse and Eutaw Springs. He was shot in the hip in that last battle and discharged as a corporal.

Anyway, I will recreate James, Jr.’s, campaign trail on two wheels, with “northern” and “southern” battlefield tours.  Should be fun … and the right thing to do.

Bill

Bill, just a little thread drift.  ::)  Some years back I attempted to get a SC Rally going and, as we didn't have twisty roads, make American history the rally theme.  Lot of history in this part of the US.

Over the years if  I've driven and ridden past Guilford Courthouse once, I've done it a hundred times and never stopped in.  And each time I say to myself, "I'd like to visit that" but never have or at least I don't remember doing so.  Eutaw Springs is just across the lake and been there many times. Most times when I head for the mountains I pass through Camden.  If Walter Edgar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Edgar and other Southern Historians are to be believed the war was won in South Carolina. His book "South Carolina a History" is one of the few history books I actually enjoyed reading. Before you visit I recommend you read Edgar's book Partisans and Redcoats:  The Southern Conflict That Turned the Tide of the American Revolution. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/partisans-and-redcoats-walter-b-edgar/1111350068?ean=9780380806430 This book left me with the impression that after the British captured Charleston and had they left folks alone we would be part of the UK.  Folks here in the Low Country, the ones that ran things that is, could have cared less so long as they could make money run their plantations.  But the British attempted to force them to fight against their neighbors and that pissed them off. The rest is history.

Aside from my daily commute I will be staying east of the Mississippi this year. I'll be making a trip to NOLA in July then off to Florida for a couple of weeks visiting my daughters and granddaughter then returning home. Bi-monthly trips to Boston will continue to visit my son. All in all it will be another good year of riding and enjoying the open road.
