I took off my centerstand to paint it today and put it back together how I thought I took it apart but it doesn't snap all the way back up to frame, drooping by about 2 inches. It wasn't that way before so I must've put something back awry. I searched the board and took it apart and put it back together again but just can't figure it out. any ideas?
it's only got 1 'wavy' washer, which I think is correct looking at the manuals. do the springs need to be oriented in a certain way?
thanks for the help.

Speaking for my own bike, replacement was a Beast >:(
If that differs from your experience, then my guess is that your reassembly procedure could be at fault. For instance, attaching the springs involved spreading them so that they went back in their original location.

Did you ever figure this out? I took mine off to refinish, but I haven't put it back on yet so not sure what this could be. Also, what was your trick the get the springs back on. Looks a little tricky...

It wasn't that hard actually so maybe I'm doing something wrong? But I've studied the parts catalogue pretty closely and if that's right, I've got all the pieces and they're all installed right. The springs are only a year old so don't think that could be it.

As far as installing the springs, I used the method recommended by someone else on this forum of bending the springs and shoving pennies into the folds. Used about 5 or 6 to make it long enough to stretch enough to reach and then took them out. A vise is your friend while doing this!

Good tip! Thanks!

That's a great tip, thanks. And very Guzzi-like, using pennies. I'll bet with a BMW you have to use quarters. (EDIT) Or half-dollars.

When installing the center stand springs on my 750 Breva, I raised the stand to its upper most position which gives the shortest distance between the two mounting posts. I then placed the two spring hooks on the upper post and made a wire loop using some stiff multi strand wire, running the wire through the hole in the right hand foot of the centerstand and then hooking the lower end of the spring hooks in the other end of the wire loop. I then used a screw driver placed in the middle of the loop to twist the loop like a "spanish windlass" to bring the lower spring hooks down to the lower mounting post. The job took about five minutes with no sweat or strain. If my explanation is not clear, google spanish windlass and you'll find a diagram.
I considered the pennies method, but as the Breva Center stand springs are concentric, I couldn't figure out how to open both with the pennies method.

Wish I'd thought to use pennies (or washers) when I had my centerstand off 20 years ago. I still remember what a bitch it was to get the springs back in place.
If you didn't learn a few new cusswords while putting them back on by pulling or levering, you didn't do it right.

still looking for any hints as to why my centerstand isn't snapping up to the frame when not extended. any ideas fellas?

I'm thinking either those flat plates with the spring lugs are upside down (if that's possible) or the bushings are installed wrong they are directional side-to-side since one bushing pair is longer than the other), or there is another bushing inside the stand pivot hole(s) that is missing.
If you have a pic of the assembly we can tell better.
Also -- I don't use pennies. The bike must be in the air enough that the centerstand won't touch the ground when extended. With the non-stand-engagement end of the mount bits assembled and hanging, hang the springs on the frame-side lugs. Now put the other end of the springs on the stand lugs (as the stand hangs under the bike). Rotate the pivot end of the stand into place (use the lever effect to stretch the springs as you rotate) and shove the bolts through. YOu can start with smaller diameter pilot bolts if you're having trouble with the final alignment. Like the swing arm installation, it's a few second operation once you get the 'hang' of it. It helps to have a friend to keep the springs in place, but zip ties or such will hold them if you're working alone.

Me too,,, I have a similar issue,,,80 CX100,, centerstand cleaned up, moving freely, with new springs,,, but the stand doesn't "snap up",, you have to conciously lift it up and hope that it's got enough snap to hold it in place.

to quote from an earlier thread on this topic:
Resolution is nice. So, for the archives, what worked for me:
The stand consists of the stand, two big wavy washers, two big springs, two bushings. The rest of the hardware shipped on the bike from Italy. I greased the bushings and that way they stay in the stand as you play with the wavy washers. The bushings are actually a little longer than the center stand's mounting hole is wide. So, you can kinda hang the washer on the bearing. I guided that easily into one side of the chassis mounting place and slipped the bolt halfway in to sort of keep it there. Then finessed the other side in place. Five minutes, once you have an idea of how it goes together. The springs? Pennies. Couldn't believe how easy it was. Nice to have a c stand.
I only have one wavy washer but that's all that it had before. I'll check to make sure everything is installed correctly again when I can get back into the garage.

To fit springs, attach to stand
One long phillips screwdriver through spring loop, onto spring mounting lug on plate, pull, click, on
The nose of phillips point will keep located, actually far easier than using a spring hook, leverage is your friend
Drooping ? NFI, but stand should move easily with tightened bolts before springs go on

On my new Norge, I have to lift the center stand with my foot. It will not just snap up into position. It needs some assistance. Once up, though, it does stay put.

I was going to post this but thought I'd better have a look first..... ;D
