Title: EDC Knives- some Guzzi content
Post by: drums4money on March 24, 2015, 06:43:55 PM
OK- there's plenty of stuffs we seem to collect around here.  From bikes, to guitars, to cameras, to watches, and I'm guessing . . . . knives.

I got a Kirby Lambert for Christmas, and my friend Tim (Norge owner & sometimes lurker here - there's the guzzi content) shows up at work today with one he custom made.  Pearloid handle with Guzzi logo- belt/pocket clip, acid black-washed hardware, and a blade so sharp it will split atoms.

I'm digging the variety of knives I'm stumbling across.  Anyone have any suggestions for EDC, cool to have a few but not too pricey?

DPX Heat
Fallkniven PXL
Reinhard Mueller liner-lock
Benchmade 550 Griptilian (or mini)
SOG Trident
Kershaw Baby Boa
even a Case Stockman when I feel "old school"
very inexpensive Gerber Crusader

Probably more that I've forgotten.

My favorite two are the lineman's knife (and pliers) that my dad was issued during WWII and the std stainless pocketknife (Camillus) my father-in-law was issued when he was on subs (USS Sablefish).  Not worth much but I love them.

A lock back Buck was about as fancy as they came back when I was a young'un.

It's solid!  I wish i could get a shot of the edge on that thing. My buddy's got this crazy technical sharpening rig that can put a razor edge on a sword.  I've never seen a knife so sharp.

My favorites include the Spyderco Dragonfly II and a Benchmade Doug Ritter mini-Griptillian

Here is an excellent review of the Dragonfly. It is a small knife that can fit inside my jeans watch pocket, but it works like a larger knife thanks to the choil & handle design. It has a nice solid sounding snick when you open it.  Spydercos come very sharp from the factory. So be careful when showing off to your friends how well it shaves arm hair.

The Doug Ritter version of the mini-Griptillian is my favorite looking small folding knife.

If you are looking for something less pricey then I like the SOG mini-Aegis. It weighs only 2 oz. and is very slim with a very deep carrying clip. So it becomes invisible and unnoticed when I'm carrying it.

I would be completely lost without this little jewel. I can fully disassemble a computer with it(my profession), clean and trim my fingernails, pick my teeth and much more.  I've been carrying one everyday for as long as I can remember.

LOL, I used to carry one of those, or a variation, as well.  When running a wire plant I used to use the side of it to check the 'lay' of the running wire.  Mine had a bunch of little grooves from that.  Mine had a phillips driver that I almost wore out on the machine electrical connections.  I love their toothpicks and the tweezers were very good for as cheaply made as they were.  I found out you could also dress the edges of the tweezers for even finer grip.

Now I carry a Leatherman with me.  No toothpick or tweezers :(

I have a couple of Kershaws for everyday.  I don't know if they are cool or not but for EDC they are handy.  An Ace Folder will set you back $8.

I've got drawers full of knives, but my go-to is my Emerson Commander.

Unfortunately, the price of knives has gone up...and down.  You guessed it- the quality, domestic makers have outsourced and have cheaper produced made in thatlargecountrytha twillnotbenamedbeca useIwillseemracist.   The overseas knives are NOT the same quality.

I've always liked Benchmade products. Generally good designers and solid constuction.  My preference tends to run to sub 3" folders. Sub 2" is too small. Over 3" is just too much for EDC

Benchmade mini Morpho "butterfly"     D2 tool steel blade.  surprisingly thin and light. Very quick to deploy once you get the "flick" down.
Benchmade 705 McHenry & Williams   very thin and light, yet decent blade strength. Wonderful axis lock system
Benchmade mini Deja voo    Nice design and light for its size  phospur bronze pivot for smooth deploy. Not as fast as an axis lock. Somewhat thick compared to the other selections here
Benchmade mini griptillian      very comfy handle and best in class axis lock. However, the lack of liners is a cost saving measure
Spyderco dragonfly mini        spine lock strong yet slow. VG 10 steel definitely inferior to D2 or other steels in Benchmade. spring clip weak and bends out

The griptillian and dragon fly are super-cool. . . but this takes the cake!
It don't get more Guzzi Content than this.

That timing chain damascus is too cool.

My favorite is a Swiss Army Knife Officers model.

You can trim your toenails or open a bottle of wine with it.

I like the Kershaw Leek blem for $29 shipped from Kershawguy.com. Made is USA, the 'speedsafe' assisted opening is super nice, no plastic in the thing, and it is one sharp son of a gun. Tough to beat in my book.
