Ouch!  That must have been a painful realization!

"The solution would be to get the final drive gear cut opposite or just
find a BMW wheel and modified it to fit"

Yeah, just get the gear cut opposite.  What?

Hope they installed a throttle that only opens 1/2 way , because even if someone sorts out all of the other issues , that oilhead engine will completely overwhelm the Sunbeam running gear  :o Probably 3X the HP and torque of the stocker .

I can't imagine the crushing feeling of investing that much time and money to realize that I missed something so obvious and fundamental. Even if it worked, it was a piece of crap though.

No hill for a climber. Just get a cam ground to run it the opposite direction, put carbs (and a throttle stop to let them open no more than 1/4) on it, and yer good to go..
As mentioned above

Right, and get the starter modified to go backwards.  I have one on those on my Correct Craft Mustang (Ford 289).  Cam, water pump, and starter are different, everything else is the same.

Don't forget the oil pump.

Funny... I rebuilt the 289 and didn't change the pump because it was in good condition.  I never thought about that being different.  I suppose if I had bought a standard oil pump I would have noticed that it was different looking from the backwards one.

I have dreams of completing my trike, putting it in "this way" gear and going "that way".  It's a recurring dream.  Sometimes I go out and check the direction of rotation just to make it stop -- but it won't.  After all the dreaming and checking if it DOES go backwards I'm gonna do something desperate.    **C   **C   **C

Don't forget the oil pump.

camchain tensioners won't like being on the load side either.

Get rid of the Sunbeam's worm drive and mate a BMW rear end to the wheel.  And modern brakes.  A 4" kickstand under the left cam cover would be nice.

After taking a closer look at the photos, that thing appears to have a lot of work left to do before it's finished.  I wonder if the bids are real.

Yeah , but all of the hard work is done  ::) Noticing the angle between the trans and driveshaft looks a bit uncomfortable  ???

Another reason Tobit's solution is the only realistic one.  But the finished bike isn't something that would give me incentive to do the work.  Maybe if it had the original engine...

Could be standard issue for the WWII-era Italian army:  1 speed forward, 4 in retreat.

Yeah, just get the gear cut opposite.  What?

Well, if you take the gears to a machinist and tell him to "cut the gears opposite", and he jibs at that for some strange reason ....

It's obviously very simple (hence the cheery "just find") to modify that BMW wheel.

Reminds me a lot of those ads that say "Just needs the battery charged to run".   REALLY?   So instead of charging the battery and selling a running bike for $4,000, you're just going to blow off the $5.00 battery charging and sell the bike as a $1,000 non-runner parts bike ... ?
