Had surgery yesterday to replace the disk between C4, C5 and C6 in my Cervical spine. Have to wear this thing for two months. Not as uncomfortable as it looks. But....... still sucks. At lest I can walk without the aid of a walker but have a long way to go.

" Resistance is futile " . Sorry Matt , couldn't help myself ;D Get well ;-T

Well, you survived it in good order. ;-T Thant's what they wanted to do to me. They decided on something a little less severe. You'll have about 10 days of discomfort, and then you'll come up on-step quickly. My biggest problem was being patient for the month they wanted me to stay patient. Behind the surgical pain I could feel the improvement and really wanted to get back to my routine. If I've got any advice, it would be to NOT give in to any urge to be productive until the doc clears you for action.

Geez, Guess won't be seeing you in Homer this year.
Heal quickly but listen to RK and don't overdo. Show and steady will the race. See ya at Swamp Scooters if not before take care,

Actually, I'm going bat shit crazy sitting around and only three days into two months. To replace the disk they cut a hole in the front of my neck and I have to wear this collar for the next two months. SUCKS. I think it to hold my spine in place while it heals or it keep my head form falling off, not sure. Surgery relieved a lot of lowered back, hip and knee pain but still not walking all that well. And I'm bored as hell. Physical Therapist stopped by yesterday to do an evaluation. Nice guy. Seemed to know what he was doing. Told him his job was to get me back on my motorcycle. He was OK with that. ;-T Next visit is Wednesday and should be female. ~; Oh, please be female. ;D Makes being a geezer worth while.

GWS DILLIGAF. You've dealt with bigger problem than this, you'll get through this great. Use this down time to plot/plan ways to annoy the wife, scare the children, and set several different routes for future rides. :D

Thanks, but been there and done all that. ::( Wife has been great - so far. :bow I've been thinking about learning the software for Garmin Base Camp and I don't even use a GPS.

As I sit here with a new hip I feel u r pain! Got home Fri. No riding for 2 mos.
I had similar done to me in' 07.
Broke and dislocated neck - they went in thru the back of the neck, cut a lot of muscle. Fused C3 n 4. Had to wear the collar for 4 mos.
The nerves take a while to calm down

keep my head form falling off,
;D That's probably it. GWS. I think I'll go for a ride in the mountains.. ~;

If it weren't for the drugs, things like that would be no fun at all.

Matt, Inconvenient, boring, bad timing, but if the back pain is gone it's worth it, right? You're right, it's a good time to study something, or binge watch a series or two if you have Netflix. Somehow I don't think that would appeal to you though. ;)
Hope you're up and travelling asap.

After a few hours with that horrible software, you will be using some long lost curse words. ~;
It well.

I find it surprising that an old geezer ( I'm allowed to use that term as I are one ) with bone problems wants to go to a place reknown for its' cold wet climate
especially when you live in a warm place.

Yell, BTFOOMT. ;D That is how you text isn't it. Just type a bunch of letters and see if anyone can figure it out.

:beat_horse Well this just sucks. Surgery didn't accomplish a thing. No improvement at all. ::(
:+1 to the Physical Therapy folks. My first appointment was two weeks after my surgery and, after an evaluation, advised me to call my doctor. Managed to see doctors PA about 30 days after surgery. "Expect a 100% recovery" he said. PT folks didn't buy it and called. Got to actually see the doctor 6 weeks after my surgery. "Never had this happen before". He ordered another MRI and said he would call. Sure he will.
Now for the bright side. ;D I have eight motorcycles that need to be ridden. Number one son took three and oldest granddaughter and her husband are taking the MSF course next month and are willing to help. ;-T Number two granddaughter call to help but as soon as she found out her father had the ST2 she lost interest. Oh, Well.
Now to find a doctor that knows what is going on. ;-T I'm missing my :bike and I'm missing you guys.

:winer Last night, about 1745, the surgeon called to inform me additional surgery would be required. No shit. Today is the seventh week anniversary of my operation all all I've done is get worst. This morning, after my Physically Therapist and Primary Care Physician threw up some red flags, I am getting a second opinion and maybe another doctor. PT sort of hinted that a second opinion was in order but my PCP didn't mince words when it came to a second opinion and "hinted" about another doctor. ::(
Stay tuned. This is BS.

Wow Matt, reading the update I was really surprised. I thought about you when I was at the meet last week, assuming you'd be back riding soon. It sounds like you have a good plan to move forward though, so the best of luck for an actual recovery as quickly as possible!
-
Knowing what I now know I would never have posted. I was sure I was looking at just a "bump in the road". A quick medical "tune-up", a new knee , a little touch up on the old spine and I would be seeing everyone at the National on my way back from Gander. Something to brag about around the campfire. Your comments have been most welcome as well as the PMs and phone calls. Thank you. Not going to happen. The diagnosis is ALS. SUCKS

I'm sorry to hear that.
One thing that has impressed me about you Matt is that when you visit an area you get involved with it -- interact with the local people, attend events, etc. Not your typical tourist. I think you've gotten a lot more out of your travels than 99% of others.

Really and truly sorry to hear that. I did click on the site and have made a donation, seems like the right thing to do!

Went to the VA Hospital to be evaluated and measured for my new wheels :thumb: A very technical operation requiring four people. A doctor, a arm measurer, a leg measurer and a powered wheelchair controller evaluator ( PWCE). The MD was in front of the PC, the am measured my arms, the lm measured my legs and the PWCE determiner I was right handed. :blank: All entered into the PC by the MD. With luck the new wheels will be here for the NC Rally the end of this month. :boozing:

awesome news!
-
For some reason -- probably because I have seen Newfoundland from 33K and had no more interest in it  -- I had never opened this thread.
Sitting in Atlanta today, I saw the "redneck escape ramp" thread, read that, then found my way here.
Have been sitting here somewhat speechless since. I then called Kathi over and gave her the news. She, too, was similarly affected.
Matt, you have been served quite a stunning medical verdict, yet exhibit such calm courage and pluck that it makes me wonder if I could muster that in the same circumstances.
You already know from the outpouring of support that you have Guzzi and other friends all over this planet. Kathi and I are among them. We all count on you calling on us if you need something.

Last year at the NC rally Marion, that's Pat on the left, was awarded the love award for putting up with me all these years.

These past few months I'm learning what love really is.
Bill, with any luck we will be up your way for Apple Butter.

About 30 miles from your home in VA.

I started the redneck thread mostly to poke at stick at the VA but a solution to my dilemma was posted.

Matt -- how is your mobility without the chair?
-
Can't walk and can only stand with help. Just about lost use of both arms. Currently I have to suck my beer through a straw. My wife has to give me a shower. 55 years ago that was a lot of fun. Still is. :boozing:
Matt

Are you going to put a powdered comanche on your chair? :grin:I heard they increase speed. horsepower, gas mileage and cure dandruff, if it isn't terminal.
The very best to you.

When you saw me I was just recovering from similar motor problems (different source though). Mine came on over the course of a couple-hour nap and I lost my ability to walk, too. Thankfully, I'm getting over it after 5+ years of gauging my day by my ability to wipe my own ass. I hope yours reverses, too.
