Title: Ev battery discharge light
Post by: Bill N on March 29, 2015, 06:09:07 PM
Battery discharge light came on during ride. It's never done that while motor is running. It stayed on and I returned home. The ride was about 30 minutes. Once home the battery seemed strong and checked out at just over 12 volts. Voltage with engine running around 13-14 volts. I think its a false light but have no idea what would cause this. Any suggestions for further trouble shooting?
Thanks, Bill

check it in the morning after sitting, a good battery should be 12.5 or higher.

One possible cause is a failing regulator.  I've had miserable luck with them on the ducati alternator.  On the voltmeter they tend to wander up and down the voltage scale while you hold a steady engine speed.  When they stop wandering they're dead, Jim.

We've  had to do the voltage regulator on both of our 98 EV's.  Regina's came on after a fueling stop on a mid-day ride.  Turned back home.  Next day it was fine.  Couldn't risk it.  Mine started coming on below 2k rmp.  Replaced both with units from EME.  Years ago and fine since.

I may be able to help you test the regulator, I have a few sketches.
PM sent

Moto Guzzi eliminated the problem of the light coming on by getting rid of the light.  My 2004 EV doesn't even have one.  ;D  I had to install a digital volt meter so I would know what's going on.

Yes but starting in 2004 they also put in a much better regulator. They previous Ducati version wasn't real reliable.
Also, if you look at how the light works, it doesn't mean much.

Yes, if it lights, then the bulb is good.  :D
That is about all it is good for. That schematic you made pretty much verifies that.
