Title: What to do in Mandello del Lario?
Post by: Dimples on April 01, 2015, 05:44:23 PM
I'll be in Milan for business next week and have a day to visit Mandello del Lario. Any recommendations? Interesting Guzzi related places to check out, etc.?

Thanks!

I had a similar situation a year or so ago but only a few hours. The museum is only open one hour a day. Otherwise there is Agostini's where you can pick up Guzzi swag and look at bikes. Otherwise I walked around and looked at the beautiful surroundings. Lake Como is stunning. If I had more time, I would have wanted to drive around the area more.

I went a couple years ago, did the tour, walked the town, went into Agostini's. HAd I known that there were so may of the original supplier in town I would have gone hunting for them, at least Stuchi.

The factory is nice, even if you aren't there at museum time.  There are far better museums throughout Italy.  You can stop and shop at Stucchi (Via Per Maggiana 24/B) and also at Vallasi (Via Parodi Ernesto, 29) and also at Agostini (Via Statale, 60).  Nice food down near the ferry terminal.  Its a quaint little town.

If you go up from Milano by train there probably won't be time for much more than what's been recommended above.
If you have a car or bike you can also enjoy the sights of the beautiful Como lake. Como itself, Varenna, Bellagio. Take the ferry between the two latter.

When I was there two years ago I was there for a full week and stayed at Alla Torre Del Barbarossa (B&B), I would say if you have the chance, make a reservation with them to get diner there since the food is absolutely amazing.
http://www.allatorredelbarbarossa.it/home-it/ You cant just walk in for food since its not that big and it is always full. THe owner (and cook) told me some stories about him riding on his V50 to Portugal and such and according to some people I know that speak also speak italian thats also a place where some old guzzi engineers occasionally go.

If you just want some simple pasta made delicous go to: Il Canton Della Pasta @ https://goo.gl/maps/Er2N7, that guys has some awesome bikes as well but not at his shop usually.

Other than that, don't forget to talk to the elderly over there, talked with an elderly lady when I was there who worked for guzzi during the second world war. Aparantly it was supervised by engineers from Zundap (if I remember correctly) and they were also making parts for panzer tanks back then. Other than that everybody is very warm and friendly in Mandello. I found the people that were more in the touristy places were way more closed off like at Bellagio or Lecco.
