Title: Clever ideas to weigh bike??
Post by: kevdog3019 on April 03, 2015, 09:43:42 PM
Anybody have an idea how to get her on the scales? I've starved the bike over winter and curious what it's skinny weight might be.  ???

Discussed here before. Bathroom scales. One wheel on the scales, the other on a block the same height as the scale. Switch wheels on the scale, add the weights together.

Hold the bike against your chest and step onto the scale.  Subtract your body weight. Voila!

Or go to a junk yard or other industrial scale and weigh it.  S'not a problem.

You might want to find out when the scale was calibrated and what the error is.

No use weighing it on a 10 ton scale with 1% error.  (20,000 x 1% = + or - 100 lbs)

The other option would be a freight scale.

I was thinking a copper / aluminum recyclers scale might be best because it would only be a 1 ton or so scale.

Of course they would also read a little light -- within the error of course.  I wonder why....... ;D

Engine hoist and big-game spring scale.

How about using 2 bathroom scales?

Any larger truck stop will have a scale. While riding out in the country feed mills and gravel pits will also have scales. Close to my house there is a Farmers Cooperative that leaves there scale on 24/7. I have weighed my bike fully loaded for vacation wife and all and the rear tire is very close to maximum weight capacity. It is a great way to check if you are over loaded just like the big rigs. Here is a link to Cat scale locater at a truck stop near you. http://catscale.com/cat-scale-locator

Thanks all; think I will attempt a bathroom scale if I can scare one up. I thought I had heard this before but search engine was challenging on this one.
Appreciate your thoughts.

BTW, hoping for around 370lbs.

The only "problem" with weighing on an industrial scale (truck stop, feed mill, etc.) is the majority of them only show weight in 20 lb. increments.

No. If you're referencing the pic of 325# on scale, that's a cafe'd V50III (dry wt)

No, I believe the V7's weigh around 415-420 stock.  The Larios were said to be about 385 stock from memory.  Of course they were said to have 60hp output also so you know where their figures came from. ::)
I'm simply curious.  It feels quite light; handles superbly.

It's a good way to weigh stuff.  Back at the gold mine ships were loaded with 'slurry', which is a mud made of crushed ore and water, mixed to a consistency that will pump into the hold of the ship.  This slurry was very unstable and could liquefy under certain conditions like backfill in an earthquake.  Then it would slosh in the hold and capsize the freighter ala Edmond Fitzgerald.  So weight and balance (as well as moisture content) is critical when loading.

My jobs were to check the water content and stability of the slurry.  Too little water and it would clog the pump gear.  Too much and we had a dangerous load.  The other job was to paddle around the freighters making little marks on the hull at predesignated points.  Mapping the little marks told us how much slurry was on board and when to move the pump snout to another hold.  If you read the little marks right you could tell with fair accuracy (+/- 10,000lb) what your payload and balance was.

Not true at the scrap yards I've been to. They have put my toyota tacoma truck on the scales and paid me for under 20 lb of alu. extrusion scrap. Also CAT scale at truck stops are to the Lb. the DOT and weights & measures sees to it.

I worked in the scalehouse at a roofing manufacturer for 8 yrs. Their scale was 20 lb. increments, and according to the guys that serviced them, most of that type were also. <shrug>.

Having weighed a big truck or two in 30 years plus on the road, all the truck scales I have used are in 20 pound increments.  The only state I have ever been in that 20 pounds made a difference was Ohio. There I was cited for being 20 pounds over axle weight, 34,020 pounds.  Judge dismissed it and chewed the rookie troopers ass for writing the citation. Yup, I laughed, after we left the court room. :D

The several yards I do business with weigh the whole truck for steel scrap but if you have a   load of non ferrous metal it gets unloaded and weighted on a smaller scale.
Just for facts, my 51 Willys 4x4 scrap/firewood hauling truck weighs 3160 pounds empty on the scale... Less than your Subaru ...and a lot slower.. ;D

I worked at a VW dealership in the 70s that sold new beetles for $1/lb.  It worked out very close to the sticker price.

When I was in the Army I did a lot of ditty (DIY) moves and would go to places like Allied, Bekins, etc... to either get weights or get ideas on where to weigh. Lots of the bigger U-Haul outfits'll know as well.

Also, truck stops.

Scale empty, scale loaded do the math.

Todd.

Host a party with a lot of different size/weight people..  set up a large balance beam, park Guzzi on the board, have friends get on the other end of the board until too heavy and you tip it in your favor, have someone get off and a lighter friend get on, repeat/shuffle people until balance is achieved.. then weight each of the persons and add it up.. you could play this game at a weight watchers or other diet club..
If the Guzzi falls off it won't get wet..

love the boat idea.

Too expensive. Think of the beer bill.. I still say junk/scrap yard.
