Title: 1997 1100 Sport gas tank issues
Post by: Rosso Woody on April 06, 2015, 06:51:14 PM
I bought an 1100 sport thaty had been sitting for 7 years and can not get the key to work the lock. I was going to try and remove the whole mechanism and have trouble getting it to move. I need to remove this anyways for paint.

What is the easiest way to remove the whole locking mechanism? I have removed all the M5 bolts but does not seem to want to come out? I do not want to force it if there is some trick I am missing????

Thanks for any help...

Are you talking the recessed tank filler on the plastic tank.

Even if you take all the screws out there are others hidden below the cap.
Are you sure you have the right key, If someone changed the ignition there might be two
Does the key work in the seat release / helmet lock?

Yes it works the seat release and the helmet lock...

Bought it from a guy I know said it works - he is trying to find the other key.

So you are saying there is additonal bolts? I was trying to see on the microfiche for additional information

Have you tried drowning the lock mechanism in WD40, RP7 whatever the brand is that you use? Some genius has probably decided to lube the lock with graphite powder which works ok for a bit and then packs in and gums up the works.

have tried the WD 40 first with no luck. Needed that to work the seat lock mechanism.

The fiche shows the bolts going through to the tank (3 longer ones) and there are 3 shorter ones mounting the outer ring plate.

I would of thought it would have pulled through but dont want to force it if I have something wrong???
