Title: Reinstalling the front axle on the 1200 Sport
Post by: ohiorider on April 06, 2015, 07:41:18 PM
I'm not certain if all the CARC bikes use the same front axle.  Here's my question, specifically to 1200 Sport owners.  Do you have any difficulty getting the front wheel remounted?  I find that there's two shoulders that must be in near-perfect alignment before the axle will slip all the way thru left and right fork legs.  I'm at 54k miles, and have reinstalled the front wheel at least 5-6 times, but I still fight it.  Sometimes it surprises me and other times I'm dorking with it for several minutes before it slides thru both fork legs.

Any simple solution to this?

At the risk of insulting you, the spacer goes on the side opposite from where you insert the axle.

I know at least one person who was trying to put it on the same side as entry (LHS from memory).  The wheel wouldn't fit between the forks.

Gitta bigga hamma.  Or do what I did to my Ural patrol when it had that problem.
I chucked the axle in a lathe and spun it while holding crocus cloth against it until it polished up like chrome.
Then it slipped in with very little effort.

It is a alignment problem and yes it is pain at times. I leave the mudguard on to help with the alignment and it is a bit easier if you have a main stand to keep things vertical.
The spindle really needs a lead in on the front of the thread then it would go in alot better.
