Title: Tire repair plugs
Post by: Chuck in Indiana on April 06, 2015, 08:37:05 PM
I have this kit and I'm out of plugs. Thought I'd just go to a local shop and get some. Nope. Anyone know where I can get some? Progressive Suspension..and yes, I've had it a long time.. ::)

I've carried one of those for years. I got replacement plugs online a long while back. Maybe from JP Cycle, Denis Kirk, or directly from Progressive. I've forgotten.
The plugs now no longer have the adhesive band around the center. Just an all rubber plug. I used one of those new style ones once. It worked just fine, but it didn't feel like a good idea. I will likely just switch to the 'gooey worms' next go round.

I always look to Aerostich for some of those repair items.  They seem to have a good selection.

I've had excellent results for many years with the standard rope inserts sold at Walmart etc.

I've had excellent results for many years with the standard rope inserts sold at Walmart etc.

I have to say I'm with David on this one. The gluggy *Rope* inserts are a nasty little kludge but their main issue is they look it! The nicer looking plugs essentially still rely on a self vulcanising seal to do the job and although they rarely fail they are still a 'temporary' fix.

I think because of liability issues you don't, or can rarely, get internal patches fitted in the US. This is a terrible shame as the CV process is very good now and for plugging simple punctures an internally applied patch will  outlast the tyre without compromising safety in the least.

I used a kit like that for riding in the woods for years. Saved my arse many times on the trials bikes. I carry a little e-lectric compressor on the road bikes now.

The plugs are not vulcanized.  I have used this on the roadside.  It will definitely get you to a place where you can get a proper patch/plug or new tire.   It doesn't take much room in my tank bag.  I just thought I'd put this out there in case you want a new kit.  The vulcanized ropes often get you home too.

Ok, NLA apparently. <sigh> The kit came with 3 plugs, I've fixed 3 tires with it.  ;D I like it because it's small enough to fit in my jacket pocket out here in SoCal. Back home I have a small compressor and worm kit, but it's huge in comparison. Maybe I can find some different plugs and reamer /applicator that'll fit in the box. Thanks for the replies.

One repair kit that hasn't been mentioned is the Nealey plug kit. It consists of different kits for motorcycles, cars, heavy equipment, atv. I have used the motorcycle kit and was amazed how easy and well it works. The plug ropes supplied do not require any vulcanizing gel like other kits. I was skeptical until I used it.
I also carry a small portable compressor with me.

I'm testing that theory.  Another respected forum member had mentioned the NAPA internal patches.  I ordered half a dozen of them.  My small independent bike shop loaned me their internal patch tools (reamer, buffer, rubber cleaner, patch roller) they no longer use, and I repaired a PR3 that had picked up a very small staple right in the center of the tread.  I also used cement from NAPA.  The rear PR3 had less than 1700 miles on it when punctured.

Now Pete, you just have to understand some of us folk. I grew up in a Mennonite farm family. The standing joke was:
"Two Mennonite farmers spotted a penny on the sidewalk and grabbed it at the same time. Now you know how copper wire was invented." :D

Chuck, you can find two of those plugs in your mailbox if you will PM me your address.  I have a kit just like that (with two plugs left) that I no longer carry, having changed to the kit jetmechmarty posted.  I also have a small pump, about $35, from the same people:

It's small enough to fit the tank bag, and as an extra added bonus the hose is about three inches long! ;D  Plus side is it can connect to just about anything, including clips directly to the battery.  I've used it a couple of times and it does work.

Woo Hoo! FREE!  ;D (Guzzi content) and probably a lifetime supply. I have two different compressor setups, but out here in California the Mighty Scura is normally naked. This little kit fits in a jacket pocket and makes me feel better.  ;D PM headed your way..

Got the PM, will go in the mail shortly.  The pump would probably fit in a good-sized jacket "cargo" pocket, if you're so inclined.  As to the "lifetime supply" bit, you've already used 3 of them, so it's not at all certain that these 2 will get you through another 70 years. ;D

I patched the rear on my EV and ran it another year.  Got rid of the CO2 bottles and got a Slime Compressor.

Indeed so. I think it good to support a supplier, that way they keep being a supplier.
