Title: Searching for a Swanee
Post by: Kevin M on April 07, 2015, 04:30:58 AM
I'm looking for a complete Swanee in good shape. I have been looking for awhile but they seem extremely rare. If someone has one laying around not being used, I would sure be happy to have it. I have posted previously in the Wanted section but no luck. I thought I would try here, not sure how much the Wanted forum is looked at. Thanks for any help.

I don't think you'll find an original much cheaper.

Havn't seen or spoken to RichEV for a long time.  I was in his garage full of EV's years ago, and he had an original on the shelf.

Shoot him an email.

Fairing. As pictured in my avatar.

I can't help you with a fairing, but if you're one of the under-six-foot riders I have two short windshields that are compatible with that fairing that you can have. I bought my bike (with a Swanee) from a shorter rider and he'd had the windshield cut down to fit his gaze.

[radguzzi] gave me a full size one - I have the short one that was on the bike when I bought it and a piece of plexi cut to a similar size that was in the box Rob [radguzzi] gave me.

EDIT: A NEW HOME HAS BEEN FOUND FOR THE WINDSHIELDS - THANKS ALL - Norman

But the swanee quality is better in all respects.

Except they are plastic and have been known to snap in two right in the center

I bought a Swanee knock off from Harper's a few years back for my Bassa.  When I opened the box I found that the fairing was broken, cracked in two, and that the box had been crushed during shipping.  I called Harpers, they immediately sent out a replacement that UPS did not crush!   Its fiber glass, and looks really good on the glossy side, as it should.  The mounting hardware was all high quality as well.   I'll say,  they are  a little weird looking, just like the original, but nothing works better at creating a peaceful air pocket than the Swanee/Harpers fairing.   No, they are not cheap,  you get what you pay for, and if you wan't something that works fantastically, the Harpers Swanee can't be beat!

Yeah.  The fiberglass H&H fairing is a nice piece, and it works.

" I'll say,  they are  a little weird looking, just like the original, but nothing works better at creating a peaceful air pocket than the Swanee/Harpers fairing. "

I would phrase that as " old school looking ". I just completed a 600 mile trip with mine through agricultural land, and here is an excerpt from the yet-to-be-released ride report.

100 - estimated bugs-per-square-inch on the fairing and windshield

24 - bugs that made it to my helmet

And I heartily agree with the " peaceful air pocket " -  Sometimes I forget to use my visor.

Oh hell , let's be honest , these fairings are so ugly they cause the bugs to commit suicide  ;D

Yep, they're homely boogers, but I've never ridden behind a better handlebar mount fairing. They're a perfect example of function over form.  ;-T

How does the Swanee compare to the Guzzi Touring fairing on a Tonti California?
The Guzzi fairing mounts up very firmly, and seems to control the airflow nicely for me,on my Cali II. I have never ridden behind a swanee,
Rick.

Wow Kev, after almost 5 years you still have not found one and after the hell of a deal I offered you and talking to you twice about em ( no call back) your still looking, any way since I replied to you I'll give the same deal to anyone looking also. A newer H&H all white and I'll throw in a Aero with it. Good luck in your search.

Hi Michael!   I bet you took that photo. That's the day my Convert rig took a dump on the way to the vintage bike rally. I had to go back and fetch the BMW....

Yes, you did offer a great deal but the hardware was for a larger diameter handlebar (Vintage) and will not fit or work for the Caifornia II. I hope you got it sold.

I have the Harpers one sitting under a bench. The problem is the size of the box needed for shipping. I can't  find one and don't want to waste any more time looking, specially since the shipping charges would be huge. If you get to Mpls I'll make you a good deal. Painted pearl white to match a 2000 Bassa.

When I had my Bassas, a black 1999 and a blue/silver 2000, I also had the Swanee Aerofoil and the Moto Guzzi California Touring Shield. They both worked perfectly but IMHO the CA Touring Shield looked great on the bike. Since it was all clear, it never distracted from the lines of the bike. I don’t recall who made the CA Touring Shield but it sure was sweet. Size wise, the Swanee and the CA Touring were about the same.

And I thought a swanee was a Kiwi bush shirt.
Wouldn't need a fairing if you had your swanee on cuz..

Kevin,

I found mine on craigslist search tempest. I was just lucky at the time, but a guy from some Honda forum had it and was really a nice guy. I paid $60.00 for it and about the same amount for shipping from Washington state to North Carolina. Best fairing I ever had on any bike. The deals are out there, you just have to get lucky. I'll keep my eyes open.
