Hi,
It’s Steve Sleddon from Dart Flyscreens here. I think quite a few members are familiar with our products but if not, we make a range of small screens for naked roadsters, and the V7 and Griso are two big sellers of ours. Check out www.dartflyscreens. com and you’ll see.
I’m here with an offer
you see, we’ve just launched a new screen called the Marlin. It’s slightly larger than the Classic flyscreen and is styled with more than a nod to the Mk1 Le Mans, so it should suit the Guzzis rather well. The problem I have is that I don’t have a V7 any more, so can’t take any photos of the screen on the bike.
What I’m looking for is a couple of V7 owners (preferably two different coloured bikes in reasonably standard trim) who can take high quality photographs of the screen in position. In return, you get a free Marlin screen to keep. You’ll also be the first two people in the world to have one on your V7!
If this is of interest, please drop me a line: steve@dartflyscreens.com
All the best,
Steve

Thanks for the info, and offer, Steve.
Looks like it might be a good one.

All the best,
Steve
You've got mail.
If someone else hasn't already offered I'd be very happy to mount and photograph the new version of your flyscreen.
As a matter of fact I've currently got the standard V7 Dart on there now so I can provide pictures with both for comparison purposes.

Yeah, and I just happen to be looking for a hair more protection so this could be perfect.

Well, you did offer something free to a bunch of Guzzisti ;D
I can personally vouch for the Dart flyscreen on the V7. Looking forward to the availability of the Marlin!
-
Please consider me also, my Dart flyscreen is only 2 weeks old and I would have opted for something larger if it had been available. Thanks.

Steve, will this new screen fit the V7 mounting brackets for the Classic?
-
Steve, will this new screen fit the V7 mounting brackets for the Classic?
FWIW, I don't see why not.
The Dart I currently have mounts on either a Classic or a V7 the same way.
And actually I don't think there are any differences in that area - i.e. the headlight, headlight mount, triple-tree, bars etc. are all the same AFAIK.
-
Steve, will this new screen fit the V7 mounting brackets for the Classic?
A popular question! No, I'm afraid not. The increased size of the Marlin means larger brackets too. Sorry 'bout that.

WOW, so WHAT is different between the V7 Classic and my Stone or a Special that interferes? I'm surprised.
Or did I misunderstand the question. Was he asking if you used the same mounting brackets for the Dart flyscreen as for the Marlin?
I thought he was just asking if the Marlin for the Stone would fit the Classic too?
-

A difference in the mounting brackets, not the bike.
I think the question was would brackets for the smaller screen work with the new larger screen.
Answer was they will not because new brackets were required for the new screen.
-
Ahh got it - I misunderstood the question. ;-T

Mutual misunderstanding Kev! Rocker is right - I was referring only to the difference between the screen designs. Mounting points on the various bikes are the same throughout the range.
-
I'm particularly thick these days. :) ;)

The Marlin certainly has a nice styling to it. I like the way the Dart smooths the air without buffeting the air, and wonder how the Marlin would change and/or improve that.
Here it is on my '07 Breva 750:

Smooth air is the key, not blocked air. Bigger isn't necessarily better if it creates more buffeting. Air is not the enemy; clashing of air is.

I suspect the key to this design is the curve which would potentially address your concern.

Yes, I have a Dart Classic on my V7S, was wondering if I could just buy the bigger screen and re-use the existing mounting brackets. This is the forum of cheapskates after all ;D

INITIAL REPORT.
Came home from a 100 mile or so ride on the V7 Stone on Monday to find a UPS package on my porch.
Recognized the sender and quickly ran with it back to the garage to install the Dart Marlin (removing the Dart Classic).
It was late and I had things to do (and it rained all day yesterday) so I haven't had time for any pictures or a thorough test yet, but before grabbing the kids from daycare I ran back out for a quick 5 mile or so buzz up and down one of the main roads by my house trying to note the differences with the Dart Classic at speeds around 30ish, 50ish, and 70ish.
Here are the first impressions.
I'm very happy with it.
Extremely high quality construction, design, packaging, even the installation instructions.
It looks and feels much higher in quality than the National Cycle Hand Deflectors I installed on my Sportster this past fall.
More importantly compared to the standard DART Flyscreen that I've been using for the past few thousand miles it produces the larger bubble of dead air that one might expect and which I was wanting.
The Dart Classic produces a dead pocket of air at my chest on this bike, basically taking all wind pressure off it. But if I slouch a little my face (and I prefer an open face helmet when I can) winds up in some turbulence, with only the top of my helmet in a clear stream. If I straighten up them most (maybe all) of my face gets in that clear stream of air. It's not bad and I think it looks fantastic in that it basically disappears on the bike (while providing an easier to clean surface than the back of the instrument pod lol).
In contrast the Marlin seems to produce a dead pocket of air that is larger, at least up to my neck, possibly even including my face at lower speeds - 30ish for sure, maybe 50ish. On top of that, I need to test more, but I THINK it might transition better from the dead pocket to the clear stream with minimal or maybe no buffeting. The additional size and probably the SHAPE seems to contribute to that. As such it's much more comfortable for me in an open face helmet and I think it's a keeper.
I might be able to sneak off later today for a longer test and a few pics late today, so stay tuned.
-
My Marlin also showed up in the mail the other day, but I won't be able to get it mounted until next weekend. First impressions: love the shape, same high quality as other Dart products and agree that it will likely provide the extra wind buffeting that was missing from the Dart Classic. Can't wait to see it mounted up.
Will post some pics and feedback soon as possible.
Based on my early expectations, let me know if anyone is in the market for a used (but mint condition) Dart Classic screen. :)
-
Bump.
How 'bout those pix ??

Maybe today if weather cooperates. Along with more detailed review.
-
I'm also looking forward to pictures and feedback on buffeting. I have a National Cycle Plexifairing 3 on my Nevada and while it provides good wind protection it's really larger than what I wanted and although I made it work, it doesn't fit properly. I like what I'm hearing about this new larger Dart wind screen.
-
Seems like Stephen sent these Marlin screens to the wrong people for pics in a timely manor. ;)

OK, so I now have a couple of hundred miles on it MOSTLY with an open face, in temps from 50-70F, but with about 40 miles or so with a full face helmet as well.
I LOVE IT.
I'll basically stick by my initial impressions.
Up to almost 50 mph my face is ALMOST in a dead pocket of air - or the airflow is gentle enough that it feels that way. I can even keep the FF helmet shield up most of that IF I WANTED TO.
In the 50-80 mph range you quickly transition to a full stream of air on your face/helmet, maybe with just the slightest bit of side-to-side turbulence around the chin BUT that might also be because I was in and out of cross winds a lot (especially this afternoon).
I think the biggest difference is the size/shape of the Marlin might all but eliminate that zone of turbulence that exists between the dead pocket of air and the full stream of air.
It MIGHT concentrate it into a slightly stronger full stream of air at that point, but nothing that was bothersome and completely un-noticeable with a full face helmet.
I think this is exactly what I was looking for that allows me to wear an open face when I want to, and makes wearing a full face effortless even at highway speeds.
Steve - if you're reading this I have about 50 pics to go through and email the best to you, will try to get them out tomorrow.

Thanks for the great write-up and pics. Before seeing it on your bike, I was a little worried that the function would outweigh the form, but the slightly larger screen still looks great on the V7. Can't wait until these are available to order!
-
Thanks Kev!
Any idea if this screen will fit with the instrument lowering kit that Zaoguzzi makes? My Dart flyscreen fits with it, although slightly modified. How much room is between the cluster and the shield?

Now if we can just get the other lucky guy to install and take pics of his free Marlin screen as well....

No idea Moto as I've not seen the lowering kit in person. But I'm happy to take measurements if it helps anyone.

Pretty sure the other guy's pics will look suspiciously like Kev's, unless it's a Racer.
-
Kev M did you happen to get any pics of the brackets or pics of the bracket installed without the screen during the installation process? Just curious about adapting one for my v65

I did not, but I'm happy to take some close ups for you of the mounted brackets tomorrow if you want.
I could also scan the very detailed installation instructions which include some good sketches.

Measurements probably won't help as my gauges are more horizontal than yours. I'm sure I can make the Marlin work, just like I did to the flyscreen.

So there is just one mounting bolt on the bottom of each bracket?
If so, then the shield could be pushed out just a bit, if needed, for the Zao Guzzi gauge bracket.
-
When is this new screen going to be on the market? Anyone know?

Yes, the bracket mounts to the bike in the exact same way as the Dart Classic.
It uses the headlight mounting bolts (one on either side).
But it has a tab on the back side of the bracket which holds the bracket from rotating due to wind pressure. The tab sits on the headlight mounting bracket ears.
So there are two potential problems if you just rotate it forward.
1. You need to come up with a way to hold the shield in that position (extend the mounting bracket tabs in some way).
2. You change the aerodynamics of it - likely moving that dead air down and forward, and possibly creating some turbulence.
I'm sure it can be done though.
-

The OP should be able to answer that. I would suspect immediately or very soon because what I received looks like it was not just a prototype, but like it was out of warehouse stock (fully packaged to appear in a store). Though I could be wrong.
-
If your instruments sit lower, the screen may have to be mounted more upright. Those tabs on the back of the brackets don't necessarily have to rest on the headlight ears. Just get some washers with teeth, or rubber and tighten it down. I have a Dart on my V7 Sport and the tabs don't sit on the ears. Works fine and doesn't move.
-
Sorry for the delay, I will have full set of images up this weekend.
-
When is this new screen going to be on the market? Anyone know?
I just heard from Steve at Dart.
He says right now I've got one of the only ones.
But they should be available in the next 3-4 weeks.
-

With my Zaoguzzi kit, I had to install the Dart flyscreen in-between the headlight mount ears and the headlight, so the tabs don't rest on the ears as it's mounted (the ears a re bit longer, and will dig into the headlight, and crack the plastic headlight bucket with too much tension...a spacer between the ears and headlight would work just as well). I don't have star or rubber washers, and the flyscreen has held quite well at speeds over 90 MPH. The Marlin may have more air pressure on it and require those washers, but I'll find out when it happens.
Thanks for the pics, Kev!

Love it! - If your looking for an awesome screen for your V7...this is it. Up till now I had the Dart Classic, but the few things about it that I did not like have all been addressed with the Marlin.

I felt the Dart Classic was great for keep keeping the backs of the gauges bug free and looked sharp on the bike, but actually offered minimal wind protection (which was no surprise since that was how its advertised). Just after using it I was hoping for a bit more, but did not want to actually move up to a full size screen. The Marlin adds about another three inches which now provides the wind protection I was hoping for, while visually the extra size is non-noticeable when looking at the bike so it still looks sharp.
If anyone is looking for a used (but mint condition) Dart Classic screen just email me. I'm definitely keeping the Marlin.
-
These small screens are really a great accessory for a medium-sized bike. They're affordable, they make a noticable difference in comfort, have a minimal impact on the original look, and don't require painting. In the bargain, those folks at Dart are easy to work with. I'll probably stick with my original Dart screen on my Bonneville, but this new model looks like a better option for folks who have only one bike...its sure to expand the utility of any naked motorcycle.
-
Just installed a Marlin on my V7ii. First impressions are great. Looks very good without adding too much and ride feels more comfortable.
