Title: gasket construction
Post by: redrider on April 08, 2015, 02:36:42 PM
I received the new timing cover gasket for the V11 and it is metal but the one in the kit for the 95 Sport 1100 is paper. The two appear to be identical in shape. I've never had an issue with the paper valve cover ones even when re-used. I just wipe a bit of grease on both sides and assemble. No leaks, weeps or blowouts. The metal one fitted has weepage and once used, cannot be re-used. Q-is it ok to use the Sport gasket or is the metal one superior? Thanks in advance, folks.

Whatever doesn't leak is superior. For valve cover gaskets I like the thicker Garlok (green fiber) gaskets.

Thanks. I suppose Guzzi had a reason for the change but all change is not always good. I have no experience with the metal types and they certainly seem to be single use. A smear of yamabond on both sides may be added.

 Update-Guzziology set me straight.

Multi layered metal gaskets are far superior.  Dont use any gasket sealer on them. The black coating is a  pressure sensative sealing compound.

Hey.....is this an oil thread disguised a gasket one????   ;D I'd use the paper one first.

The reason for the change to the metal composite gasket was that the stressed nature of the engine in the Spineframes was causing the 'Paper' gaskets to be split and wriggled out from between the mating surfaces of the timing chest cover and the crankcase. I'd use the later gasket.

I defer to Pete's wisdom and explanation.   ;-T

No deference required Tom, it's just a differing opinion and explanation.

I would end up using the gasket on the appropriate bike here in the fleet.   ;-T
