Title: Digital helmets
Post by: mwrenn on April 11, 2015, 05:02:01 AM
Not sure what to think about this.  Seems like it would be too distracting.  I like that you can dim or darken the visor.  Maybe some value to some riders.  I'm sticking with my old helmet for now...

it might be the future, but not mine.

I read all of the info on the site and although I usually like high-tech gadgets, this one is NOT for me.
A large part of the motorcycle riding experience is being able to be aware of everything around you (much more than when you're in an automobile) and this helmet appears to be something more like a computer "gamer" would love; NOT someone who likes to actually experience reality rather than virtual reality.
I would NOT be a candidate for a future purchase of this helmet or any helmet with these types of gadgetry.

Wow yup and in 5 years you have to throw away your $1500 helmet if you follow what the manufactures advise. Near the end of the video there is a Guzzi Call 1400 for a nano second.

The first thing I thought on seeing the display ... don't bump your helmet too hard or you will get a sharp thumb in your eye! Ouch!

I was an early "Fan" of Skully on Facebook a couple of years ago, where they posted lots of info about the progress of the helmet. Interesting stuff, but ultimately not worth it--I'd rather swivel my head around and see what's going on, thank you. And in a crash between a distracted Skully wearer and a distracted texter, the Skully wearer will still lose.

Their claim to fame seems to be how much money they've raised. Then came the pre-order and hard sell emails, then came discounts and extended deadlines for pro-orders.

I don't think that to date, anyone has been able to take a ride wearing one. Lots of ohhs and ahhs from on-line reviewers who never get a chance to do more than put it on and then take it off.

Unfortunately, I think the day they are released is the day we'll hear about someone plowing straight into something because they were busy looking at the display.

I tried to get on their beta list, apparently suspendered geezers aren't in their target demographic..   :o

Why not a variation of welding shield design?

Why not a variation of welding shield design?
I would guess because of the expense of replacing the shield annually as they become scratched or hazed, assuming you ride regularly.  Also, a reflective projector can be focused so you don't have to refocus your eyes when switching between display and road.   It can be quite difficult to quickly adjust eye focal length between 2 inches and the horizon.
