So I was talking to a coworker last night, he mentioned that he has ridden a bike where he had to kick start an inertial flywheel system before starting the bike.
Has this ever existed? The only place I've ever seen an inertial starter is on radial aircraft engines. This guy is notorious for being a compulsive liar...

??? Wasn't that how the early mopeds were started? Pedal to get the flywheel going and then the engine took over, :pop

The ones I remember used the pedals to get the bike moving. Then you engaged a clutch to get the engine spinning to start it.

Closest thing I've seen is a video of a guy (in flip-flops no less) kickstarting a Guzzi Falcone. He uses the kickstart lever to rock the (external) flywheel back and forth until enertia finally takes over and it starts.

Here's one for the pilots.

Has to better than a pull start. I hate those.

What about a kick-start car ?

The last sentence of the original post tells the answer to the question.

25hp, 36hp and bastard VW engines as well as my '50s triumph cars had lugs on their pulley bolts for a hand crank start. My triumph cars and some of our farm tractors also had rope pull options. My 'modern' Honda 90hp marine engine also has a rope start shiv around the flywheel for in case the starter doesn't work. Like I'm gonna rope start a 90hp 4cyl outboard . . .

I saw a small 50cc dirt or trials bike, Honda I think that had a sort of inertia starter on it a couple of years ago. You put the bike in neutral, pulled the clutch in, kicked the starter, and let the clutch out. It was a very small bike for maybe a 5-10 year old. It was a 60's or 70's model I think. I think I have a picture somewhere if I find it I'll try to post.

The Ariel owner's guide suggests getting the flywheels in motion and then giving it compression - essentially the same thing? :pop
I posted it all just so you'd know how to do it... ;D

I like the dipper switch. ;D

Honda Express Moped
You push the lever repeatedly until the spring is wound tight and you pull the trigger

How else would one start a weed eater engine . Hmm , what about a kickstart lawnmower ;D
Dusty
The one has its own inertia for sure. Fires you right up just looking at it. ;D :P

That was from back in the day when you were expected to know what made a motor run. <shrug> Now, all you are expected to know is how to turn on the key and punch the button. If nothing happens? Oh, never mind...
Personally, I just call WG. ;D

That looks like my model VB it had the same dash in tank
600cc sidevalve single, great old bike 1948 if my remembery is working.

I have a vague recollection of someone doing it at an old bike show however can't recall what bike it was on. A lot of the early machines the pedals drove the rear wheel and to start you pedalled the rear wheel into action while on a stand to start the motor so a form of inertial starting.

Should be the same except maybe tele forks on a '48. Owner's Guide is for all the Ariel singles 1939-1947. The bikes didn't change much year to year. The VB is a cool bike, but I'd bet your Guzzi is more usable. ;D

The blonde person is in the way. I can't fully see the bike. ;D (http://s1318.photobucket.com/user/redrider901/media/Dolmar_chainsaw_motorcycle_1_zpsiklgaxen.jpg.html)
