Title: Oil Filter Hose Clamp Believer
Post by: 80CX100 on April 15, 2015, 10:09:20 PM
I had referenced in another post that I would be dropping the sump on my CX100, to put a hose clamp on the oil filter as recommended by some here to prevent serious damage if the filter loosened off inside the sump.
I had previously put in a new oil filter when I first got her,but the bike hasn't been ridden much since,, but after reading a few horror stories,, I couldn't get the nagging doubts about it, out of my mind.
Sure enough when I opened it up,,,the filter was loose,,,not rattley loose,,, but even coated in slippery oil, with just a paper towel for gription, I could easily tighten it 1/3-1/4 turn.

Cheap insurance and peace of mind for the price of a hose clamp, jmho ymmv

This is liable to wake up the anti-clampenites on here but I'm with you. I started using "THE CLAMP" years ago. When I instal a new filter I fasten the clamp about a 32nd inch away from touching the relief valve that way I'll know if it moved the next time I'm in there. I've never had one move but I never service a Guzzi, mine or anyone else's, without this cheap piece of insurance. I actually redirected my money from the red suspender to my hose clamp fund.

Could not find it in the service manual, so am compelled to ask what torque value do you clampettians use for this application?   ;D

I use a 36 DD clamp. that way I have a knob on each side and I don't have to worry about it tightening up either.

Back in the 80's Dr. John Wittner posted a handful of tips for the Lemans III in the MGNOC news. A hose clamp on the oil filter was one.

Don't forget to safety wire your clamp(s) in place.  Just in case theys to work loose ya know.  Don't want 'em flingin' about twixt that cammershafter lifter thingy.

Red clamps work better.

Fun aside, I never had a filter work loose, but I've started using a clamp since joining here.  But then I didn't tighten my sump bolts enough and lost one down the highway.  Where's that oil coming from?
