Title: Just curious re how to determine phase sensor air gap
Post by: ohiorider on April 29, 2015, 10:52:24 AM
I was able to remove and reseal the phase sensor on my 1200 Sport.  Other than being in a rather awkward location, the job went smoothly enough, though next time I'd also get a new gasket for the plastic breather junction (that bolts to the block) I removed to make it easier to reach the sensor.  After a 50 mile flog, things seem to be oil-tight regardless.

Question - if one were to lose or destroy the shim pack upon removal, how would one go about measuring the air gap to determine what thickness a new shim pack should be?

I measured mine with a digital caliper but if you don't have that perhaps put a dab of stiff grease or soft wax that the gear can shave off, nothing that will harm the engine of course.

Update:
I agree with Pauldaytona with the cover off is the best you can use feelers.

best way is with front engine cover off.
