Title: Small Block oil upgrades to current specs
Post by: v65tt on May 20, 2015, 01:04:20 AM
Hi,

I have 2 guzzi's , a very early V35 with a late monza engine and my pride and joy a V65TT.  Both seem to suffer from the oil getting very hot on long rides, even to the point of the crank thrust bearings getting a little noisy.

Was looking at the parts catalogues and noticed that the big end bearing shells and oil pumps etc are the same part numbers on my 1984 V65 TT as a 2011 V7 Cafe.

The modern efi bikes are spec'ed to use synthetic 10w60 because of the extra heat, can anyone see any issues using this in older small blocks like my v65tt? as the bearings are the same I cannot see the oil being an issue but would welcome some input!

TT has a different exhaust system from a factory fresh bike, has twin rear silencers and a LM1 style front cross over manifold

What oil do you use now?   I have a `04 750 Breva and even tho it says to use synthetic 10W-40 oil I don't.  I use car petroleum oil 10W-40 in winter and 20W-50 in summer.  I have ridden 2up in 105-121F temps @ 65 mph with no worries for 48K miles.  But in your case maybe synthetic oil is better option.  :-\  Believe my cylinders have more fin area than your small blocks.

Get a sump extension for increased capacity. I wouldn't personally change to a full synth without re-sealing the engine as it will likely leak. Not a certainty but it may.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies!

TT wont really take a sump extension as it has a sump guard i'm keen to keep.

I was originally using Valvoline VR1 Mineral 20w50 but was warned away by several UK owners and my friends at the guzzi main dealer. I moved over to Morris VeeTwin 20w50 Mineral and the problems are much less pronounced on longer journeys. I am chaining every 1500 miles along with a genuine UFI filter

Both engines are leak free, and around 160psi compression and push very little out of the breathers

I ran Motrex 10-60 on the Lario and now the Aero Lario. <shrug>  :pop

I would love to hear their rationale for not using the VR-1. Lots of ZDDP in that and I believe it was Curtis Harper that recommended it. IMO it's a very good oil.

I used it for break in oil on the Aero engine.

the V7 has a bigger oil pump, a deeper sump and a taller gearing as your v65TT,
my V65TT also runs very hot, a fitted bigger jets to keep it from overheating.
The V65 Baya had a oil cooler

I have used VR1 mineral for years, but my local guzzi dealer and mot ( gov test) station warned me about using VR1.  To be fair my TT sounds better on the Morris VeeTwin!

Huub what jets did you go upto?  Any pics of your TT?

I take it the 10-60 worked well? ;)

You say that you were warned not to use VR 1, I'd love to know the consequences as it's in my V65.

Somebody is trying to bunch up his knickers. VR-1 is a good oil and has good levels of ZDDP for our old scoots. I'm not buying their word.

I have 1000 miles on it, it's still clean, and the engine hasn't burned any. <shrug> Hasn't blown up, either..  ;D that's a good sign. <shrug>
It's just oil for heavensake..  ;) Use SG rated oil. Period.

This. And Pete is being very generous with the "not a certainty." We all know how wonderful Italian rubber products are [or at least, used to be. Thank goodness some things have changed for the better! ;-) ] Even originally good quality rubber 30 year old American & Japanese seals tend to leak synth oil like crazy, despite being reasonably oil-tight when fed dead dinos. But originally marginal rubber? Have seen it happen more than once: an older vehicle fed synth starts "marking its spot," and then stops again when switched back to the cheap stuff. You decide.

Old rubber and castings.

They did not elaborate much on the VR1 advice except that guzzi's need a SG rated oil and VR1 does not meet that era of specs even though the zddp content is high, will ask next time I am over at the dealer

Not blown up is a very good sign, think i'm going to pop 2 Liters of the oem Eni (agip) 10w60 synth that the EFI V7's use  in the TT and see how we get on.
