Title: How is a LeMans 1000 tank fixed?

I have an SP2 with a tank from a LeMans IV or V but would like to know how it is normally fixed down.

I have a rubber strap looped through a hole in the metal plate at the rear underside of the tank. The rubber strap has hooks on the end which hook round the steel mounting pieces inside the triangle of the frame. This is OK as a temporary measure but not ideal.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could explain the correct the fixing method.

The Le Mans 1000 "Mk4" has a flat steel 'strap" straddling the frame rails with a mushroom shaped prong that screws into the center. The prong goes into a grommet which is in the hole of the tank.

If you need that "strap" and prong, I have one that mgmark sent me with the Le Mans bodywork I bought from him.

That's absolutely brilliant Antietam! I couldn't have hoped for better.

How does that prong work? Do you have to screw it to make it expand in the hole in the tank to hold it down?

I'm grateful for the offer of the prong and strap but sending things from the US to the UK is usually stupidly expensive, probably considerably more than the value of the item here!

The strap looks straightforward enough to make but the prong looks tricky, can't quite tell what the various components are but it should be too hard to make for little money.

There should be a rubber grommet in the hole of the tank. The "prong" just slips into that grommet with an interference fit. The weight of the tank holds it down.

I can ship the strap with prong to you for $25 (about 16 GBP).

Procedure for fitting the tank:

Fit the two ears inside the front of the tank's tunnel onto the rubber pucks mounted on the frame near the headstock,

Spit on the fingers of your right hand while holding up the rear of the tank with your left,

Smear the saliva on the rubber donut under the rear of the tank,

Line up said donut with the mushroom headed post pictured above,

Push down on the rear of the tank until it pops into place.

The front of the seat helps hold the tank in place.

If the two ears are at all bent out of shape (heavy tank bags will ruin them) have them straightened and reinforced. If the rubber pucks are rounded at the edges they must also be replaced otherwise the tank will roll from side to side. The pucks of the V11 are a much better fit.
