Title: Moto Guzzi Eyes Building a Rival for the BMW R nineT?
Post by: Seagondollar on May 22, 2015, 12:43:16 PM
Saw this in the news:  http://www.autoevolution.com/news/moto-guzzi-eyes-building-a-rival-for-the-bmw-r-ninet-95746.html#comid53420 (http://www.autoevolution.com/news/moto-guzzi-eyes-building-a-rival-for-the-bmw-r-ninet-95746.html#comid53420)

I say build it with the 8V engine.

Even being an avid Guzzi fan, I like the looks of the R nineT better.

I thought the R9t was a copy of the Griso.

Yeah.  Me, too.  I thought the R9T was a response to the Griso.  dunno.

Anyway, I sure hope that Guzzi does an 8v 940cc engine!  850 crank with 1200 8v top end.  Or, an 1100cc engine:  850 crank with a 1400 8v top end.

A short stroke screamer in the Bellagio chassis with classic bodywork.  That would be the shite !!!

I can't wait until November !!!

Take the Griso, update it with ABS and Traction control if necessary

Us the present 1200 8v engine

Titanium the exhaust

Carbon Fiber the wheels.

Instant R-Nine-T killer.

and Guzzi can make the seat section modular like BMW for a single seat, double seat and luggage attachment

The Griso is the meat, now hand it over to a top chef to prepare it. This is what BMW did with the R nineT and Roland Sands. There are so many designers to partner with, the Griso could be THE bike with some tasteful treatments.

What a poopy read!   There wouldn't even be a Nine T, if not for the Griso!  But I do hope Guzzi comes out with a new or updated middle class motor, I have always loved a good screamer!

And I repeat my request to replace the parts between the upper frame tube and the engine with a cold air scoop kinda like the old V-Max (that were fake) made out of carbon fiber.

I used to have a BMW R- nine T, a 1976 model.  Damn fine bike it was, I finally traded it for an original R-100 Paris Dakar 1991 model.
                           Oh, that's R-90

The Griso is currently much higher spec than the wretched BMW thing in all areas apart from weight and even that is probably more advertising lies than fact.

I'm sure the Griso pic was used simply for reference

Yeah, I don't get it. I thought that BMW was shooting for the Grease O with the R9T and fell short except on the price.  ;D
Still.. maybe a proper middleweight would get me to open my wallet.

I agree with Pete, I think everyone here assumes they know what a Griso is because because we own the brand.  As far as Roland Sands or Arlen Ness or any of the other designers goes I think of them as just that, designers.  Changing the appearance of something does not change its content. I am a meat and potatoes kind of guy and the Griso is a 16 oz. prime rib rare.....yum.

This article makes little sense and maybe I'm missing something.  It seems more like the author's interpretation the bike would be a competitor for the 9T.  All I really see from Colanino is that the bike would slot somewhere in that small window between the V7 and 1400  ::)

Had the Griso, have the NineT.

NineT is significantly lighter than the Griso.  Feels every bit of the 40 lbs or so of the claimed difference.  In the real world that is kind of irrelevant.  Neither is hard to handle.

Objectively, the NineT would seem the better bike.  Subjectively, I wish I had got another Griso.  Better engine feel and much better suspension.

When I first bought the NineT, I did a comparison and graded them even, with their  strengths and weaknesses balancing out.

Now, while I still like the NineT, it just doesn't have the feel of the Griso and no longer brings the same smile to my face when I ride it.

Wallet open, early order and eager wait for the right bike.

Can't be a heavy beast though with a nearly 33 inch seat height, no ABS, and unreachable side stand. Ideally about 70-80 hp.

Has to be pretty.  Maybe a color that catches my heart too.

Patient for dream bike from Mandello.

I mentioned the R-nine-T Guzzi competitor to my son on a dog walk last night.  He went to the local "unveiling" and would provide the under 25 view.

He said forget the Griso.

Take the V7, modify the design some, increase it to 850, put a better adjustable suspension on it,  dual front disks,  titanium exhaust and carbon wheels.

His opinion was the Griso was to heavy visually and physically to compete.

He thought of the R-Nine-T as more of a Hooligan bike.

Still he didn't see the point.  Most BMW buyers buy them for the service network and "perceived" value.  He said that the Yamaha FZ-09 was a better bike and better value.

Posted here many times before.  The G wins this comparison even with the Scout and CB1100 thrown in for good measure.
http://www.cycleworld.com/2014/12/01/retro-motorcycles-comparison-test-review-with-photos-and-specifications/

Even still, as much as I want, want, want, WANT to love the G and feel it is one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever produced, sitting astride it and even riding it always seems one of the most bizarre and uncomfortable ergos I have ever experienced on a bike.  To me, again TO ME, it is the epitome of MGs tendency to make bikes for the short legged and long of arms.

I think you may be on to something there. I found the legroom cramped on my 1200 until I lowered the pegs. Strangely enough I never had an issue with my 1100??? . I'm also considering risers still for the bars as I don't really have a problem with the bend but think they might be a bit better for me if slightly higher.

Really though the Griso is a very polarising machine. You either love it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of a 'Halfway House' of opinion.

Yes, the FZ is probably better in HP, weight, price, and who knows what else.  But the reason I got into Guzzi is for the long haul.  Name me a 25-year-old Yamaha, BMW, or whatever that still has the class, character, and smiles per mile that a 25-year-old Le Mans has.

Nephew in San Antonio bought FZ.  He is having some buyers regret due to crap suspension.  Told him to buy a STR...he did not want to spend the extra grand.

BMW R90T looks pretty interesting to me.  Short list for third bike is F 800 GT.  Some people just don't like bimmers I guess.....

I believe that the local dealer told him that story. Maybe it was a story.

Would not surprise me even remotely.  It's a kind of small niche bike that is neither the all arounder like the R1200R nor is it a sport bike.  Could be selling in numbers that may appear impressive to Guzzi folks but slight to BMW.  My local dealer still has the 9T sitting on their floor that was there 6 months ago.  Given this latter fact, maybe design is not the only thing this Beemer has in common with Guzzis  :D  Welcome to sales floor languish   Maybe.

I road the STR & FZ9 when I bought my Monster.      The STR is definitely worth the extra money, as you'd spend $1,500 or more to upgrade the FZ9 chassis.   In the end, the Monster calls to me way more than either bike, but, the STR was a very close 2nd.

BMW R90T looks pretty interesting to me.  Short list for third bike is F 800 GT.  Some people just don't like bimmers I guess.....

A friend just got one.    I'm going to get a chance to test ride it this week.

Their new scrambler is a cheaper version of the expensive NineT.

Buyers can then purchase the NineT more expensive bits and swap them - creating their own version. Individuality using factory parts to customize your bike is now a sales feature. All manufacturers should have more than one or two suspension options on each platform in my opinion.

Scramblers ... simple, tossable, and capable motorcycles.
The Ducati Scrambler has been very successful and BMW hopes to cash in too.

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/2015/april/bmw-scrambler-is-coming/

This might be the most interesting news (to me) to come out of BMW in a while:

Quote
BMW are on the verge of revealing a range of lower cost R nineT-based bikes, with a Scrambler version leading the way.

While two of the low-cost models are expected to arrive in late 2016, we believe that the Scrambler will arrive by the end of this year. The German firm have made no secret of their intent to keep the air-cooled boxer engine in production, claiming that they can easily meet ever-more stringent emissions regulations by keeping the state of tune relatively low.

and

Quote
The R nineT has been a rampant success for BMW, with 8488 being sold globally in 2014, making it the fourth most successful bike in their range behind the two iterations of R1200GS, and the class-leading R1200RT.

Hmmmmmm

Quote
Well the BMW production lines are already creaking under the massive increase in demand over the last few years, and with boxer engined bikes accounting for the top four sales figures in BMW’s range, it’s the busiest of all the production lines.

I'm a BMW rider, my dealer is selling lots of RnineT's.  He can't get enough of them. Wish I had one!
