Title: Hitch for California 1400
Post by: Waltr on May 28, 2015, 09:26:32 PM
I may need a trailer hitch for a California 1400.  Coming up blank. I believe I someone towed a bunkhouse trailer to a rally in the NW.  Any recommendations?  Have calls into all the bigger players.

This is the only one I've been able to search up, but it's in the Netherlands:

Frank Wedge had one made for his. Looked like a pretty simple design.

Doesn't Steve Ford have one on his 1400 Touring?

Can someone recommend a custom hitch maker?

Chet Rugg was building hitches for the tonti frames, jackal, ev, bassa. Even built one for a norge. He could do it if he wanted to, but would probably need the bike close by. Odds are if you see a guzzi pulling a trailer in or around kansas, its a chet rugg hitch

I asked him about Cal 14 hitches at Cedar Vale.  He's not built one for a Cal 14, so he would need a bike at his shop to build one.

Not sure that he's up for it right now, due to the wheat crop and other things going on.

We have a full blown auto restoration shop (auto) but my tech said one thing he would not do is 'engineer' a hitch because of liability. There for looking for a over the counter spec hitch made for the bike.  I have a lead I am following, if it happens I will report back.

Try Bushtec. They are in Jacksboro Tennessee. They will make a custom hitch while you wait, with an appointment. They may also be making one for the Cal. I had one made there for my SP3 back in the early '90's. and it was well engineered, worked like a champ but they aren't cheap. Not a place to cut corners though IMHO. www.bushtec.com

The guy wanting to buy the bike baked off buying right now so no hitch needed. Stopped looking.  I talked to a trailer guy that said he had someone doing one but lost the info in a pile of sticky notes.

Micky

apologies to our friends in both countries...

Unfortunately, the Netherlands hitch looks like it bolts to the Cal Touring bag mounts, so those people with Customs will not be able to use it.

Good catch.
But fortunately for me i put the bags on mine.

So it is an option for me.

If convert money and take away the VAT which I don't believe we in the USA have to pay it is like $550 plus shipping. Still pricey bit an option.

Hi.  Any new leads on a hitch for a California 1400 Touring?  I have a 2014 and would like to try a small trailer for tours.  I have contacted the guys in the Netherlands and they have a pattern to make on but is expensive.  I would like to find a North American option.  Any leads I can follow?
Thanks,
AndyBuck

For hitches my first thought would be DMC Sidecars.

http://www.dmcsidecars.com/

They don't have one listed but they've probably made one.
