I recently ordered a couple pairs of boots to try out and decide which I wanted to keep. I've narrowed it down to the Dainese TRQ Tour and the Daytona Road Star

My concern is level of protection. The Daytona are more comfortable to me, but the dainese seem to have a hard plastic cage all around the rear of the foot and ankle which makes me think it would be safer. Am I incorrect in this thinking? Or is the Dainese more protective but marginally so? Or am I straight wrong? Any advice would be much appreciated.

What I see is two boots both being held on your foot by zippers. Zippers don't like grime and grit. It makes them fail.
Boots are often the closest part of your attire to the ground. ADV and motocross boots use mechanical fasteners.
And remember: just say NO to velcro closures.
Regarding protection? The thermo plastic boot would probably be better in the event of a body slam high-side. But at that point it may be the least of your worries.
For practicality's sake; which had the better sole? The one that you could walk in for an hour or two. The one that wouldn't be slick as >>>> on muddy ground or wet grass? Being wearable is a pretty key element.
When my wife saw my Garne boots with the big G on the shin guard she blurted out; What? Guzzi makes shoes too?

I'm a fan of whatever has the best ankle protection.
In my last race tore all the ligaments in both my ankles after a wicked high side. At the time I could have had better boots but was advised it was all marketing guff...

earemike, getting hurt sucks... been there; hope you recovered fully.
Getting the best protection available is extremely important but the shoe has to be usable as well.
Have you ever looked closely at the boots motogp riders wear? Suited well for one job ... not so much for another.
OP is looking for street oriented boots. If protection is a main concern then the Adventure market boots might be the best alternative.
I replaced some 20 year-old riding boots with Garne G-adventure boots. I can wear them all day on or off the bike, they have all the support and protection of the Dianese he is looking at, they have mechanical closures that will outlast me, the sole is a lug sole, they are water proof (proven) and unfortunately they cost a bit more than the two he has picked. Still I stand by my choice as a better buy over the long term.
And... I wish I had sprung for Garne's top shelf boot: the Balanced series. They look so comfortable.
