Title: Dipstick separation
Post by: Rich A on June 05, 2015, 09:37:50 PM
I went to change my oil today and as I removed the dipstick, I realized that the rod portion had separated from the cap. Not good. Ironically, this was the first change I did after installing an "Outsider," and I ended up having to drop the pan to retrieve the rod! (I tried fishing it out with a magnet, but that didn't work as I couldn't get it aligned with the drain hole)

If you have one of these,

you might want to check and make sure the rod is securely attached.

Happened to me about 10 years ago on my Eldo - Same exact stick.  I was at a rally, and worried about the stick riding home 500 miles in the sump.  Cleaned it up and JB Weld kept it in place for a long time.

That's annoying, shouldn't do any harm though.

That's what I have on my Eldo. Has been great for the last ten years. Now I have to get out of my recliner and go check it.  :(

Exactly the same here about 7 years ago.

No separation really. Just been out of town and then scared off by the new format of the site.

   Actually, that was my first thought when I read the heading.  (But not for me personally. We are at 45yrs next year..)

I take it the rod just falls out rather than snapping off?.

I bought a special oil cooler dipstick for my 1997 California 1100i and have not experienced separation nor over heating.

Yup. Probably wouldn't cause any problems, but it made me uneasy.
