Title: Bikes you wanted when you didn't have the money
Post by: canuguzzi on June 11, 2015, 11:12:07 AM
What bikes did you want badly when you didn't have the money but now that you have the money no longer want the bike?

For me it was the Honda Turbo, the 650. There is one for sale close to me and I could have it but now there isn't much interest. I settled for the CX500 Darth Vader at the time. I wanted the CX650TC until about 2 years ago, now, nothing.

That's an interesting question.   What did I USED to want, but now that I can have one, don't want any more?

A Kawasaki H1 or H2 would qualify.    Use to dream about having one.    But no longer on my list today; probably because the limitations are more important to me now than they were when I were a lad.

An Ariel Square Four.   Used to drool over them, but my sense of aesthetics and function both shifted.

That's about it.

78 Kaw Z1000R and 84 Kaw KZ750 turbo and almost every Moto Guzzi I saw when I was in the Navy while stationed in San Diego 81-83. I was a junior enlisted, and I rode my bicycle past the Sonny Angel Moto Guzzi dealership just about every day on my way to the ship (USS Anchorage LSD-36).  Stopped at the shop from time to time to talk about the bikes at his shop.

With the exception of the TW200, R100GS and the K75C I now own, with the exception of a R100S, the motorcycles I wish I could have owned earlier.  However, owning is one thing, riding is yet another.  The TW200 was a gift, the GS was just to good a deal and I wanted the saddle bags that came with the K75C.  :boozing:

PS:  I did own a CX500 Turbo.  Quite a bit of engineering.  :thumb:

lots of bikes are still not affordable 30 years later,
like the Kawasaki H1 or H2 or the xr1000 or xlcr,

I loved the ducati 916 when it was new, now they are cheap, and i cant see the point of owning one.

For me, that's exactly the reason.  My only motorcycle up until a couple years ago was my '72 Kawasaki H2 that I bought in '78 when I was 20.  I decided it would be fun to have something very different, so I bought the '89 Mille.  I enjoy the Mille more than I expected to, and I think I enjoy the H2 more now than I used to.

That kind of makes my head spin.  I don't get it, but there are lots of things about Guzzisti that I don't get.

Another one is the attraction of the piddly little Honda CX bikes.

That kind of makes my head spin.  I don't get it, but there are lots of things about Guzzisti that I don't get.

I appreciate the things about the Guzzi that are different from the H2, like flat torque curve, high gas mileage and 6 gallon tank that give a 300 mile range, very neutral handling, shaft drive, and the sound of the 4-stroke V-twin, for example.  Now when I get on the H2, I'm reminded of the visceral experience of riding a motorcycle that was designed to be the fastest thing on the road in 1972, that to some extent I took for granted during the 40,000 miles that it was the only motorcycle I had.

When I didn't have the money? I've never had the money!!!!

-AJ

Sort of a matter of priorities.   When I was 20, I really didn't have any money or stuff, just one bike - I'd buy a bike, ride the wheels off it, buy another, lather, rinse, repeat for years.

So out in the shop now, after years of "gathering" and building and swapping, I've got a BSA A10, BSA M21, BSA A65, Matchless Model X, Guzzi 1000SP, Norton MkIII Commando, a Stelvio, and a Morgan 4/4.   Many people here have similar collections, unless their signature speaks with forked tongue.

That's my "play money" in metallic form.  IF I WANTED TO, I could cash all that stuff in, maybe add a few bucks that I'd been saving for my old age because it's here now, and buy almost any motorcycle I wanted to - round case Ducati, Vincent Rapide, Indian Four, MV Agusta America, Munch Mammoth, whatever.

That would have been a dream at one time, to be able to own one of those bikes, and I could do it now.   But my priorities have changed a bit, and given the bikes I own, I really don't want a fancy collector bike bad enough any more .....

My first MC (dad would not let me have one while under his roof) I returned from Viet Nam with a pocket full of money, and spent all in one place at the local BSA dealer for a nice pretty A65.

The owner and his friends were into offroading the 441 in local competitions, I thought they were all nuts!

Back in the early sixties a new dealer opened in my home town, he carried Ducati, BMW and two or three lesser European brands.  He had a Ducati 250 and a BMW r60/2 in the showroom, I wanted them both.  But a couple years later and I was buying British twins.

When I arrived in Manhattan back in 1972 any new bike was out of reach -- I yearned for a Norton Commando or any BMW, and the absolute pinnacle of ambition would have been the new Ducati 750SS. I settled for used (abused) machinery needing on-the-cheap rebuilds.

Today I consider both bikes too temptingly sporty for a gentleman of my age. I would ride them faster than my reaction times can justify. Beside, I wouldn't want to adjust the Ducati's desmo valves.

I'm still sort of in that rebuild-the-clunker mode (third time around on the T) but could actually now afford a new 750 -- V7 or FZ07 or ??? or better yet a well-sorted and fully functional used Stelvio. What I really need, for the back of the van, is a 400-lb bike capable of two-up riding on mountain roads -- maybe a KLR.

This thread is so funny and great.  We all maybe have that bike.  Maybe.

Easy question for me to answer, a KTM 950 Supermoto or the R version as pictured here.  Literally for years and years I wanted one.  My wife laughed at me about it, called it the Pumpkin - because of it's halloween colors and such.  I demo tested 2 or 3 and I swear even to this day I dunno if a bigger grin I have ever worn.  Over and over and over again I'd watch this video and imagine how I wanted to be on one so badly it would hurt.  Money just never there to get it.  Then later when money was there it seemed so unpractical I just couldn't justify getting it.  I think I still want the thing but my Striple does more things better and would run circles around it mostly.

When the Buell Ulysses came out, I fell in love and knew I had to have one. They were out of my price range at the time, unfortunately, and remained that way even on the used market for quite a while. I test-rode one about 6 months ago now that they're well within my financial means, and I immediately hated it. Don't know what I saw in them at the time but whatever it was it's gone. They still look cool but there'll never be one in my garage.

1st bike I wanted when I started wanting bikes:
Honda Elsinore
My dad had two when I was 3'ish.  My mom "encouraged" him to get rid of them after I fell off the back of one while we were riding around in the yard.  I'm told I got a nasty knot on the noggin'. . . that's probably what sealed my fate.
I got older & the first bike I could buy was a Ninja 250.

Ducati Supermono.

In the early 90's, Ducati produced this 550 CC four valve single. Made about 60 hp, and weighed less than 270 pounds, basically a factory race bike. They made only about 65, so they were hard to aquire even if you had the $$. I wanted one then, and still do.

Growing up I wousld see my uncle on his early 80's H-D Sturgis and drool over it when I'd go to my grandparents house where he kept it. Many years later when I bought my first Harley I found oh he sold the pristine bike very cheap, not much more than I paid for my clapped out sportster.
A couple of years ago another uncle was in his buddy's bike the twin to my uncles Sturgis just in brown that he bought on the same day at the same shop as my uncle. I got to ride it and just wasn't impressed, the bike felt very small and not that powerful. So that little dream was smashed.

By the way a 1979 Daytona 400 is a very capable bike and they handle amazingly well!

Wanted, but could not afford/find:

BMW R90S, in smoke/grey two tone.

Laverda Jota

Moto Morini 3 1/2

Instead started on an ragged out fourth hand Yamaha RD 350.  Then various Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki I4 550s.  Eventually worked up to a red 1982 Suzuki GS 1100E.  Enjoyed them all, really.

Don't think I'd be tempted to buy the R90S or Jota today.    But that 3 1/2 still looks like fun to me.

In 1977 I walked in to Chicago Cycle to buy parts for my V7 Sport. I was greeted by 2 red and 1 Blue LeMans. I talked briefly to the salesman and was told I could have my pick for 3200.00 plus tax and license. Upon my return to the college town I was living in, I went straight to the bank to apply for a loan. I was 22, working part time and going to school. The loan officer said they would be glad to lend me 1800.00 towards the purchase. That ended that! I did buy a 78 Lemans in 1994, owned it for ten years.

If you can find someone who will let you ride "your dream bike", you can often save a ton of money and frustration, and you can move forward onto a dream that you might really want to fulfill.   That's why I'm angling for a ride on a Vincent Rapide.   I know what old Brits feel like so I know what the "baseline" is.  Compared to that baseline, will it feel like just another loose, rattly, poorly braked old Brit or will it be something special and smooth and fulfilling and wonderful?    I know I'd have to ride on a Nice One - any 60-year-old bike will feel crappy if the bushings and bearings are worn and loose ....

In high school and shortly thereafter, I lusted after just about everything Yamaha had on offer. I particularly liked the Seca 550 and 650, the XS650, XV920RH and RZ350. I could afford any of those now, but they just don't seem that attractive any more. Now, when I see one for sale, it's like "nice one, reasonable price, someone else will have fun with it". Once I bought my first Guzzi ('76 Convert) in '83, my entire focus changed.

Ducati 748 in yellow. The 916 seemed like "too much bike" and I liked the yellow that most 748's came in. Now a 748 is everyday money but I can't imagine dealing with the care and feeding of one. I still look at them and once in a while a really nice low miles example will come up but the desire is just gone.

Funny thing is I thought the 900ss was too pedestrian back then but I would love to have one now. Strange how we change perspective.

I've had and still have only one Guzzi, my LMIII, changed my whole perspective on motorcycles.

This (drool) A touring masterpiece yet simple.

I've always been very fond of the A10. This I think may have been the ultimate one.

For an afternoons blast on tight roads what could be better fun. This is a 68 one.

A second one of these. It was a squeeze to finance the 1st one I had, but what a good buy it was. It just kept doing the job so so well for the 37 years I owned it. If I had a spare one standing by in a crate I would probably never have bought another bike.

Interesting that 4 of the 5 bikes above (including the Ariel) were made by BSA. Quite a company.

In any case, were I in a position to have a stable, these would be members of it.

1970 Norton Atlas.  I used to go look at the New ones in Austin where I lived.  Later got a Commando and restored it.

I wanted an RD400 really bad when I was running around on small 2 strokes. Then it was the Suzuki GT750 Water Buffalo. Then I liked to died when I couldn't come up with the money for an XS Eleven midnight special. The last bike I lusted after and was too short in the money dept was the Cal III. Now new bikes are too ugly to get my attention, they all look like bad plumbing nightmares.

I've owned over 100 bikes in 40 odd years. (Went through a lot as a courier rider in london and Melbourne Australia.) All jap bikes and one BMW.
Here are a few............

I loved the idea of owning Ducatis, British bikes, harleys, etc,.... but after getting my first Guzzi, a 2001 Jackal, which I had designs of turning into a Cafe Racer, but decided against it, because of draconian laws against modifying bikes here in Singapore and because the Jackal has SOOOOO much style and character that I didn't want to mess with it. (Love it more every day!) The only other bike I want is every other Guzzi I can get my hands on, starting with a V7 Racer. After owning a Guzzi, there is no other brand of bike that I'd rather have.

When I was in high school, a guy up the street had a Honda CB750 Four.  That bike seemed so big and powerful that it seemed the ultimate. Also were the Penton MX bikes at a local shop.  They seemed so advanced over the Japanese 125's I was riding.

Now it's neat to see them, but no desire to own one.

To Rocker.  I was a Japanese only bike owner through my younger years mainly because at that time period the big four were dominating the race scene that I would follow (win on Sunday, sell on Monday).  British bikes just were thought to be to trouble prone and never even knew where to look at an Italian bike.  And BMWs were for those weird old guys!  About 5 years ago heard about these good deals on leftover 2008 1200 Sport Guzzis, on "Sport-touring.net" and bought one.  Next, my wife thought it was the best looking bike I had ever owned and went out and bought a used Breva 750 for herself.  Few years later traded the 1200 Sport in on a New Stelvio that I loved until a deer hit totaled it.  That's how this Japanese rider got into Guzzi's.  I do have modern Triumphs now.
