Title: Anyone take their 4 legged buddies along?
Post by: jlburgess on June 17, 2015, 09:10:26 PM
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sunlite-Bicycle-Basket-made-for-small-pet-dog-cat-black-quick-release-/281713609823?_trksid=p2054897.4275
I've been looking around for a dog carrier will fit on the back of my Griso. I already have the luggage rack and the HB saddlebags so it seems like there's a pretty wide and long platform for a good carrier to rest on. I looked on ebay and other spots and found Kuryakyn makes one but it seems a little short.  my dog is 17 inches at the shoulder and their bag is 13 inches high but it has a hole to pop their head out. I also have found one from Sunlite that is taller and is for a bicycle and made out of metal it's also about 60 bucks instead of $130. I might even custom make one but maybe somebody else has one other idea?
Here's the Sunlite model link up top.

Muley figured this one out a few years ago.  Guzziti style of course.

That setup still bothers me. It looks very unstable. But then again, I can't stand seeing unrestrained dogs in the backs of pickups.

Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog. Thought about getting them on a bike ride.
The helmets don't fit them at all and the insurance just kills having their own plates.

Mine would rather:

Although they had to take a lot of breaks to nibble the ice out of their paws.

You got pups?

We do have a litter on the ground right now. 5 girls. Noisy little creatures. Just at the stage where they open their eyes and will soon be hearing the world. Don't know if my wife has up loaded any recent photos to our website. (Borealbreeze Bernese Mountain Dogs).

I may have to break down and get a hack so mine can come along.  Old English Sheepdog is a bit big to ride on the bike.

The more refined version. I believe this rig delivered the last round of pups.

Yes that was v.2 and was designed for a full sized lab instead of the nationwide distribution of Muley Dogs (including Angus).

He's pushing 100lbs now I don't think he would fit in that. Been trying to find him a playmate but everyone has English Labs not American like he is.

I am lucky, my little buddy is appropriately sized and rides in the tank bag in front of me.  I realize not everybody has a three pound dog (well, technically it is a dog.).
Definitely bring your dog if you can, They are great travelling conpanions.  Just make sure they are safe and however you secure them on the bike make sure it is not "too" secure.  If something bad happens you want them to be able to separate from the bike and eject.
In my case I have a short lead sewn to the tank bag with just a couple threads.  Strong enough that the dog won't run off but in case of an accident it will definitely break.
Also, make sure the dog has "Doggles (http://shop.doggles.com/)".  According to my vet eye injuries for riding (or head out the window) dogs are very frequent. These injuries surprisingly do not come from bugs or foreign objects but come from the dog's own hair and eyelashes flapping against the eyeball creating cuts and lacerations.  These frequently get infected and loss of sight or even the eye can result.
CoCoPuff also has a helmet and leather jacket with spine and kidney armor, but those are really just window dressing to go with the Doggles (http://shop.doggles.com/).

By the way, a helmet makes a great portable doghouse for those occasional comfort stops.

I think I found a winner here.  The Trixie Malta looks like a perfect fit and has hard sides with mesh on top.

That looks like a great bag, so long as your dog is not a chewer.  just run a couple of non bungee straps under the luggage rack to the two handles and yur set to go.  Also easy to take off that way to take it in to the hotel.

This is very bad for me to see because I've been thinking of another hound;

(http://www.whitedeerkennel.com/Cocopuffcaesarpups%20Female%205-3%20-%2016%20Apr%202015.JPG)  she's probably quite a bit bigger now

My big problem is the transport costs as much as the dog.  to have her flown out

Butt if I make a little trip 3600 mile by Griso it would only be $260 in fuel.

Bite the bullet and get the dog.  The money you spend buying and getting a dog home will be the cheapest part of the dog owner experience anyway.

Here's a possibility that I saw on the road in town yesterday. It seems like the most flexible solution for dogs of all sizes and the occasional kid or grandkid. In this case, the dog had a harness with some mobility but no apparent ability to leave the chair. And the goggles seemed to be working just fine. In the course of three blocks of slowish traffic, I wasn't alone in taking pictures.

I have one hack and thought about setting up another one for my dog. But after thinking about it, I decided it wasn't very practical. For one thing, unless the tub had a secure cover, I'd be worried about leaving the dog in it while going in for a meal, or even into a store for more than a few minutes--you just don't know what people might do. And here in New Mexico, you'd run the risk of overheating unless the cover allowed for a lot of ventilation. The bigger questions though are where would I be taking the dog and would it be worth building a rig just for that purpose?

I did take one of my dogs for a couple of rides in the outfit: (http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g166/Taurragon/IMG_1165_zps9788289f.jpg) (http://s56.photobucket.com/user/Taurragon/media/IMG_1165_zps9788289f.jpg.html)

And the rig was used in a photoshoot: (http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g166/Taurragon/Photoshoot2C.jpg) (http://s56.photobucket.com/user/Taurragon/media/Photoshoot2C.jpg.html)

Interesting... dogs riding on bikes....certainly less distracting than drivers in cars with dogs in their lap... Dogs have been conditioned by humans to for 10,000 years to be what they are, obedient servants who will take a bullet for their master...So in return human think dogs are enjoying the ride....My opinion that means nothing...

Oh, I know my dog loves to ride.  She is eight inches tall and if I touch the bike she is jumping high enough to almost get in the tank bag by herself.  If I go off on the bike without her she pouts for days.  She sticks her nose right in to her goggles when I put them on and holds her head high for her helmet.  I think her biker togs make her feel tough.

Dogs like to be with their people.  The closer the better.  They are pack animals.  Since they don't have their 'pack' anymore they 'adopt' the human 'pack'.  They do the same in the wild, joining up with a pack, whether it is coyotes, other dogs or even other types of animals.

If businesses allowed my dog in the door I'd take her everywhere with me.

So I got the collapsible crate that I posted and it looks really well built! I took my dog for a ride around the block and she seems pretty happy with it. I would like to use rocksstraps or something else that has caribeaner on the end to hold the box to the saddlebag mounts. Does anybody have ideas about this kind of stuff, REI maybe?  I'm concerned irregular bungee cord could pop loose so I want something with a closed end on it it's about 18 inches long.  Thanks!
pS I'd say she really enjoyed the ride about 4 days ago because I just left my garage door open and the dog tried to climb up into the carrier.  if I hear the bike start up tonight I'll know who did it :-)

Oh yeah, *no* bungee cords, use straps with buckles.  Wally World or any major department store will have flat nylon luggage straps with buckles in either the luggage or camping sections.
If it were me I would not trust plastic quick disconnect buckles for my travelling buddy.  Take the time and thread the strap through a fixed metal buckle for security.

I honestly, really, feel like I know exactly when my Jack is enjoying what he's doing (or I've asked him to do) and when he is not.

When he approves of what you are saying, he stares at you and wags his tail.   This can be just talking about a ride in the car, a walk by the river, or a million other things.

When he does NOT approve of what you are intending (you don't even have to say it, he knows), he will lower his head and turn it 90 degrees away to the left or right, and hold that position until you either insist that he do it, or not make him do it.   This may include a bath, chasing a Frisbee when it's too hot, or several other things.

Jack LOVES to ride in the car or truck with us.   If I tell him we're going for a ride in the car or the truck or the Festiva, he runs to the car way before me and is vibrating to jump up onto his seat and get clipped to his harness ... and I'm 100% sure he'd love to come on the bike, either on a piece of carpet on the tank or in a hack ....

My late Shepard/Rottie mix loved rides so much that if somebody left their car door open they would find him sitting in the passenger seat.
