Title: Four Days in Northeastern Ontario (Eldorado - old one)
Post by: nick949 on June 18, 2015, 06:36:30 PM
Just back from a whistle stop tour of Northeastern Ontario.  Long days, long miles. I won't bore you with the details, but here are a few pictures.

But first a map to get you oriented.

Heading west between Denbigh and Bancroft
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate1.jpg)

Along the Trans-Canada Highway near Blind River
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate2.jpg)

Near Bruce Mines I found this guy with a dead bike at the side of the road with a flat battery / no generator. Bloody useless modern bikes.  I heard from him today that in the end, he got it sorted - long story involving Harleys and beer!  The best things happen when your bike breaks.

A little scenery in Lake Superior Park
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate3.jpg)

The road is long......

Old Woman Bay, Lake Superior Park
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate5.jpg)

Roadside attractions - lots of these
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate7.jpg)

The road in to Missanabie.  Missanabie was a stop on the trans-continental rail line, a jumping off point for prospectors and trappers, and briefly, a mining centre.  I was in here in the late 70's, so I wanted another look.

Almost there
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate9.jpg)

The end of the road. The community hangs on by a thread.

But Ernie's makes a good hamburger. The only beer options are 'Blue' and 'Canadian' (and Coors Light if you're really unlucky)

Heading towards Chapleau - then on to Timmins for the night
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate12.jpg)

Logging road heading south from Timmins
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate13.jpg)

No traffic in 60 miles - none!

I stopped at this bridge about 30 miles in to take some pictures etc. and when I started off again, my clutch cable broke
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate15.jpg)

I had a cable with me, but of course, it was one for the Nuovo Falcone, and about 6 inches too short.  BUT - it fitted well enough to get me home (note unorthodox cable routing). As soon as I set off again, a large bear loped across the road in front of me.

Scenery along the Trans-Canada heading back to North Bay
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate17.jpg)

Back into Eastern Ontario, south of Algonquin Park
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate18.jpg)

Schutt
(http://www.adamsheritage.info/images/noront/plate19.jpg)

It's not all just lakes and trees you know.  OK, I lied.

So I stopped in at Norms for a beer just a few miles from home.  When I went to leave I noticed my tyre was flat (wouldn't you know it), so we pumped it up and it seemed to be holding air. 5 miles from home, it was flat again. Fortunately, Norm has a bike trailer, so the faithful Eldo was ignominiously trailered the last few miles.

(Roughly 1400 miles total)

Here's the tally

Bugs? Surprisingly, not too bad - but, after years or working in the bush, I don't notice them much anyway. A minor irritation while I was changing the cable.

Wildlife tally:
4 bears,
2 adult moose,
2 impossibly cute newborns, no more than a day or two old
Endless deer

Every time I read one of your great trip diaries I want to retire sooner. I used to ride a lot, lot more before business took over, a 5000 Km weeks ride was pretty typical, now I am lucky to get 5000 Km in a year. Hopefully two years to two wheel freedom.

Cheers

Jim

Hey Jim, I'm not retired. I just look old!
Retirement isn't on my horizon, but not having a real job helps.
My favourite saying is: 'stuff this for a lark'.  It's a matter of priorities.

I forgot to add this one.  I love seeing these house-sized glacial erratics scattered across the landscape, reminding us that the ice only disappeared a few thousand years ago - barely even yesterday in geological terms.
