Title: EV top gear whine
Post by: EVDavid on June 23, 2015, 12:44:39 AM
Just started, a whine in top gear. Normal noise in all the others. Any opinions, please. Thank you.

My 2002 Stone whines in top gear and has done for the last 50k miles.
The noise is much reduced by using RedLine Shockproof Heavy gear oil (in fact the gearbox is transformed by this oil)
I have seen opinions vary on this forum from:
1) Strip it down now before it explodes!
2) They all do that Sir!

Well, I just lived with it, never use top gear at less than 70 mph anyhow.

My 03 EV howls like a banshee in 5th below 75mph, above seems fairly quiet.  Has been that way since day 1. Was told it was because of square cut teeth on the gears.  No idea if that is correct. Hasn't caused any problems so far.

My 2004 did it for about 80,000 miles or so. It was gradually getting louder and louder. I had to replace a clutch so I replaced the transmission bearings and fifth gear at the same time. The noisy gear really didn't look bad. I think a little of the hardened surface was starting to flake off.
