Hi. folks.
Preparing for engine reassembly, I looked at the cam thrust plate and decided not to use it.

Has anyone ever seen one that looks like this? I can't tell if it came this way, or if someone decided it would be fun to attack it with a grinder?

Has anyone ever seen one that looks like this? I can't tell if it came this way, or if someone decided it would be fun to attack it with a grinder?
I've seen a few like that, not quite as bad though. Most likely it just wore that way.

The mount holes are one issue but it needs to be replaced anyway due the the wear on the thrust face.
The later trust plates have 3 small reliefs machined into the thrust face to provide better Lubrication.
Get this type if you can or if not just use a die grinder to do the reliefs yourself.

The last one I changed looked worse than that.
Have a look around the cam rear bearing on the rear of the engine case, if you have a distributor drive gear on your cam, if the thrust bearing gets worn enough the gear will contact the rear wall.
You'll also find aluminium grit in the bottom of the sump.

A pinion shim from a Hub City "T" box from a Johnson Tomatoe Harvester can be used between the cam and that plate if the plate is trued up . It might be easier to get a new plate.
