I'm in the pits with the LBM team.  After the 1st practice, things look good for the Duc.

Let me name drop.

I had lunch today with Ronnie Jones #16.  He's now the oldest guy to make a National (he beat Springer's record).  And he still goes at it.

Anyway, I asked him about the success of the street machines like the Kawasaki vs the XR-750.  He said it used to be that a 45 degree engine was the fast way.  He thought that fuel injection on the street engines were a big reason the street engines were so competitive.  The tuners can dial in a map and adjust it during race day for the set up.  Even though traction control isn't allowed, ECU maps can dial in the power delivery.

It was a great visit.  Nice guy.  Busy guy.  He rides a street Harley; he said the sportsbikes were just to tempting and he just didn't ride on the street until he got the Harley.  I told him that we'll have to get him on a Guzzi and he said he likes them a lot.  He invited me to his weekly dinner ride.

The 45 degree firing order as opposed to a 180 degree firing order increases traction . Most of the Brit twins that raced in the 50'and 60' were converted to a big bang configuration for this reason . The XR 750 also has a falling torque curve above 6000 RPM or so , which increases traction on dirt tracks . Kind of a natural form of traction control . My guess is that the Kawasaki is using some weird ignition firing order , and that the Triumph is using their 270 degree crank to mimic a 90 degree twin .

AMA Pro Rule 4.1(i) - To prohibit the practice of “twingling” a twin, any modification of engine components to alter the stock OEM firing order/spacing of the cylinders is prohibited.

At a minimum, this regulation keeps the XRs from sounding horrible.

Was hoping you might respond Daniel . Now who knows if Triumph is using their 270 degree crank ? When watching the races , it is obvious the XR Harleys still have an advantage at corner entrance and exit . Hard to beat that 45 degree dinosaur , although they seem to be just about at their tuning limit.

As far as I know (which isn't very far), all the approved Triumphs use a 270 degree crank (and therefore, so would the racing bikes).  These are the only approved motorcycles for AMA GNC1 competition:

Aprilia: RSV 1000, 550
BMW: FS 800 GT/ GS / R
Buell: CR1125 / XBR / 1200
Ducati: 748, 848, other air cooled
H-D: Street 750 / XR 750 / XR1200 / 883
Honda: RS 750 / NC700X
Kawasaki: 650 Ninja
KTM: 990 Super Duke
Suzuki: SV / DL 1000, SV 650
Triumph: Bonneville Scrambler, America, Speedmaster
Yamaha: FZ07 / Tenere 750 / Super Tenere 1200 / Bolt

Actually Ronnie said the same thing when I mentioned it.

Personally, I think it sounds pretty cool to hear those XRs shaking themselves apart.
