Title: 2015 IBR
Post by: Kev m on July 11, 2015, 06:41:47 AM
Huzahhh, this just in.

A friend of mine from PA (XL forum member) finished 62nd on his Sportster in this year's/his first Iron Butt Rally!

His 06 Rubbermount 1200R has well over 100k miles and is running strong.

He actually hopes to compete on a new Street 750 next year if he can convince corporate to sponsor him.

EDIT - is link fixed?

As usual some great stories there.

Oldest finisher record, at 79yrs old.  One guy coasted in as his fuel pump failed 200yd from finish.  The Ninja 250 finished.  The Honda NT700 did not, charging system failed during the last night in Tx.  Dont know about the Honda NC700.

Many bike breakdowns.  Some fixed, some not.

Hmm, sorry about that.

I THINK it's fixed now. At least it's working for me.

More to the Story.

So Chris had to ride 2000 miles to the start of the rally this year, and I think it was the day before he crashed pretty badly...locked up brakes, slid down the road. Started the rally with a torn jacket and bandaged knees.

Hey guys, as you have heard I did finish the IBR yesterday.

I am overwhelmed with the support from the forum.  Believe me I could not have done this without the support.   I am in decompression mode at the moment and everything that has happened in the past two weeks is just sinking in.

One thing I have not made public is that on the way to the rally I had a fairly signficant accident  that somehow I walked away from and the sporty was able to be ridden away. How tha t happened and how I was able to ride 2000 miles to the start and then ride in the IBR amazes me. Someone must have been looking out for me as there is no other explanation.

I will post details in the next few days.

Ok, short version as I am sitting at a bar in Madrid NM ( as in Wild Hogs Madrid)

On the way out I
Took my eyes off the interstate to see if there was anyplace at the upcoming exit where I could use a bathroom. When I looked back at the road the truck in the right lane was suddenly right in front of me and I hit the brakes hard and locked up the front wheel. Not sure how how fast I was going when I hit the pavement but it was fast. The left sleve of new Klim riding jacket was shredded and the right elbow has a huge hole in it. I stood up and walked off the road once I stopped rolling with a badly sprained right wrist and elbow and skinned knees.

He also had an incident in route where the rear brakes stopped working. An XL forum member met him on the road and swapped parts from one of his bikes, turned out it was a bad rear master cylinder.

Glad he made it through.

The only Honda NT700 with the bad charging system.  He found out it was a connector from the rectifier to the regulator that failed.  Horrible way to not finish.

The guy that coasted in (Honda ST1300)?  He ended up in 1st place.

That is a true enthusiast!   I've met a lot of good people through motorcycling, and through this and other motorcycle forums.     This is another good example.

The NT is a great little bike.  After I put a Russell seat on mine it was good for a lot of miles.  The longest I did was a 700mile day, but, had many 500 mile days.  The seat was more comfortable than my car.  The bike was as capable as my T5, actually was probably a little faster.  Suspension was not great, but, not bad.  Exhaust note was horrible.  Sounded like my Yamaha generator  :)
