Title: back support
Post by: JayDee24ca on July 11, 2015, 09:41:18 PM
I hurt my back pretty bad last Monday, when I dropped the Quota while way back off road. I know the proper way to lift a bike (seen all the videos) and tried to apply what I had learned. I even hitched up my drawers and tightened my belt up high to give me support Sorry no suspenders). However the upshot was that there was a loud pop in my lower back and I dropped to the ground in pain. After a few hours, another person happened along, and we got the bike upright and I made it home. Doctor the next day tells me I tore a bunch of muscles in my lower back, go home and heal thyself. Fast forward 6 days, and I am much better, took the Qship out for another ride today, this time on pavement. Its okay, but lots of pain on bumps. It will likely be a few months before this is 100%.
I remember an older friend of mine back in the late sixties used to wear a lace-up leather back truss under his jacket, to help support his back on long rides. My back gave me hell after a few hundred kilometers, even before this injury, and I am sure that the truss would help. I know I need to do some exercises and get some more strength in my legs and back, retirement has made me lazy. But I'd still like to find a truss to wear while riding, hopefully velcro fastening, and something that does not look like a woman's old fashioned girdle.
Surely (Shirley?) someone still makes these things, and with the age profile of us Guzzi guys, one of youse guys probably has one. Right? So where can I find one?
Thanks!
JD

My back brace is 10 years old and came from a physiotherapist but try Google or ebay for the "Thermoskin" brand.

What I think you are looking for is called a "kidney belt". I used to race in the 70's with the lace up type myself. Now Fox,Thor, evo and several other companies manufacture these with Velcro closures....worth it's weight in gold when you have a sore back!

I use one of these when I have to ... quality stretch material with 2 velcro adjuster panels.  :thumb:

Looks like the Kidney belt, thermoskin, back belt type things are what I am after. I was sure they were called trusses, but I guess not! Thanks guys, I'll be buying one for sure. When I took the Q out today it wasn't too bad till I hit a bump in the road, then YIKES!!!

I have been using the back supports for lifting that you see Home Depot employees wearing and they even sell them.
