Title: My integrity is in jeopardy-NGC
Post by: travelingbyguzzi on July 12, 2015, 03:22:48 PM
Cookie and I usually do the Sunday crossword. As a duo, we are much greater than the sum of our parts.
Today, we were doing poorly.
For the first time EVER, we cheated and googled Alfred Hitchcock movies, black pro golfers and opera.
I am afraid the slope is SO slippery that we will never recover.

Yes, Dusty, it is the wife. Her high expectations are hard to live up to.
It is always women that lead to the decline of man.

You can recover.  You have to think like a crossword author.   What words have the best combination of letters, including lots of useful vowels?

Black golfers are almost ALWAYS Lee Elder.

Alfred Hitchcock may as well have not directed anything but "Marnie" where crosswords are concerned.

Opera?   9 times out of ten, "Aida".

There, you can pick it up and go from there .... and don't forget the words that NEVER show up anywhere but a crossword.

"Sea Eagle" is an ERN or ERNE.

"A bit" is an ORT.

"Lasso" is a RIATA (or 'var.' REATA)

"Full Grown Insect" is an IMAGO.

And "Singer" ANITA ODAY survives only due to the crosswords ....

Forgot about "Adit".

But you'll never forget what a Yale student/grad is called if you do a few crosswords .....

A 1939 hitchcock movie?
The eldest son of cain?
'Lohehgrin' heroine?
You have to remember it is Sunday. If you want to impress a young coworker, do the monday puzzle in front of him- it is always the easiest.
Yes, Lannis, Lee Elder, I have never heard of him.

Not to worry if that's as far as you've slipped lately.

If you do ever get to the ragged edge and are in danger of plunging off veracity's verge and into the cool and welcoming waters of the amoral abyss... there'll still be a potential career in politics.

Almost everything with sword/swordsman in the clue is epee.

A oner or something unique is a what?

Oner!   THAT'S the other crossword-only word that you always see but never use.

And Er's brother ONAN is a real favorite, although they have a hard time thinking up clever clues for him ....

But what do you do when two obscure names that no one could know CROSS each other?   That letter could be anything ..... To be fair, you have to be able to figure it out somehow ....

That is my fear, Patrick; that I have unknowingly struck a deal with Satan (Google).

You're just becoming a Citizen of the 21st century where computer search is the norm unlike 20th century crosswords.

Me?  I'm already experiencing Future Shock.

OK, well, at some point you have to admit defeat.  Man up!   Put down the pen (only a coward does crosswords in pencil).  Now that you have accepted your frailties, you can go do the research and learn the correct answers.  But, no fair adding those to the puzzle and claiming completion.  Put it away or trash/recycle  it with the blank spaces.  Next time you confront such clues you will hopefully remember the obscure solution.

And the Finnish architect, "Eero" Saarinen.  What kind of father would name his boy "Eero"?  Jerk.

I guess a Finn, secure in his mascufinnity would... That and maybe the parents of a boy with "two Mommies"?

Semi-literate Greek?

Folks with an Eero complex?

A Finn with no "C" on his computer?

That's good advice ... As long as you don't look up the answer specifically to solve the crossword and claim "victory", then it's OK to learn it in the course of normal events and go back someday and fill it in in triumph .... !

Sounds reasonable!

I would say we are victorious about 80% of the time. Usually, if we aren't, we just move on to other Sunday morning activities. This time, I just happened to have my device powered up, and it just 'happened'.
I feel slimey and say I won't do it again......
