I think my helmet rotted  When I put it on last week the headliner crumbled all over my head. I guess 7 years is long enough to use any one piece of headgear, but when I checked the prices (It's a Shoei RF 1000, now obsolete) and know I need to order Suzanne a new one also, I started shopping for more affordable tops.
The HJC CL-17 seems to be well reviewed, has good features and is reasonably priced.
Has anyone got any personal experience with these? I'm also open to suggestions for decent but affordable alternatives.
-
I own this helmet for the money hard to beat its a rebranded HJC?

kirk only lists small and extra small now. I need to get a replacement helmet for my OL, who had a minor incident today. No great harm done, except Cobra highway bars bent, and the helmet tapped moderately. She rode home once we got the bent bars removed.
Any other suggestions?

I've bought several HJCs over the years, and they've always been good comfortable helmets. One I wore out in about 4 years, one I crashed in and disposed of (noggin was fine) and one I gave to a friend who needed it .... I'd buy another. I like the fit of the Nolans for right now though ...

Muley, pretty much the same as Lannis' experience. I'm using an older CL-15, it fits me better than any other brand I tried, seems well made after 5+ years of use and no problems, and was on clearance at motorcyclesuperstor e.com for $59.99, free shipping.
-
I had an LS2 modular. Around 120 bucks. Was awesome. Had a drop down visor and all. Quite comfy for me. Chucked it once I got into a wreck. My head has lasted and in still riding. I'm using my shoei rf1100 right now. Ill get another LS2.
-
I think Kirby1923 swears by these helmets(flip down tinted lense?) and has been wearing them for years. He can afford any helmet he wants.
-
I've owned 5 HJC helmets and found them a good bargain. I wasn't pleased with my Symax and replaced it with a Shoei. But that's not a fair comparison.
Hard to beat an HJC for the price and this one is Snell approved.
-
I bought a HJC FG-17 last month. I have ridden in it about a thousand miles. It is the same as a CL-17 except it has a fiberglass-kevlar shell. Seems to be a decent helmet. A little louder with the shield partially open than I would like it to be. It is quieter with the shield all the way open than partially, but that is all subjective also. Peripheral vision is about a 6 out of 10 on the wavedog scale- better than some, not as good as others but livable and safe. It is a comfortable helmet, one that I can wear all day without giving it much thought. It doesn't detract from my riding experience. The finish of the helmet seems of good quality. My brother has a CL-17 and likes it and he rides a lot. If it fits you, and the price is right, you cant go wrong.

I've got an LS2 and it's the noisiest damn thing.

I have to agree, I have a HJC IS, very noisy, the shield goes up halfway before the first detente, and results with the bottom edge of the shield right where I look, very hard to ride with it half open. Closed it is very noisy, you can't crack the shield just a bit as there are no detentes that low. I had to play with the cheek padding to get it comfortable, still not quite there, going to go way up to a Schuberth next season.

Only when that top vent is open on mine so my knock on the LS2 is it is the least venting damn thing..
-
I really like my HJC SYmax III. Especially since I got it cheap from someone here in the forum. :)
It may be noisy but I ride behind a big windshield so is fine for me.
I also have an HJC 3/4 helmet (IS-33) with drop down visor. I really like it too. Wore it on a couple of long trips and it did very well. I still wear it every now and then just because it is so light.
-
The HJC is the only helmet I've heard about getting stolen at a rally. A Guzzi rally. So they must be good. I looked them over when I bought my Nolan. I chose the Nolan for the fit, but the HJC would have fit the bill if it had fit my head.
-
Gail tried on a bunch of helmets and settled on an HJC for the combination of comfortable fit and light weight. I've always liked the fit of Bell helmets.
-
compared to my Shoei, the HJC is noisy. The first HJC I bought, LT12 (late 90s) was the quietest helmet I've ever had. Since them they've all be noisy.
I wear earplugs all the time. I can't ride without them. I got some custom latex ones made for me at a motorcycle show. I was pretty intrigued with those headphone style helmet speakers that someone posted here. I am still awaiting earbuds with noise cancellation, I've not seen any for riders (wait they do exist for lots of $$$)- even my car radio has that.
-
I tried a LS2 modular because of features and perceived fit and quality. I am disappointed. It is noisy and has no ventilation. It was a mistake.

For the money, it is really hard to beat a Scorpion EXO-1100. You tend to have to buy one size up, however, as the sizing on them is quite small. I have a an EXO-1100 Kranium graphic that looks fantastic. Everyone comments on it. I am getting ready to sell it only because I am picking up a Shoei neotec Borealis as a graduation present for myself (graduate school). My wife has a Scorpion EXO-500 and really seems to like it. There are a lot of features in those helmets for the money. However, the EXO-1100 is a fiberglass type composite. the EXO-500 is a polycarbonate plastic.
-
my old Shoei RF1000 did the same thing. the disintegrating interior is not replaceable and the fit just got too loose. I tried several helmets and settled on an AGV 3/4 open face on sale at cycle gear. fits great and doesnt get pushed around by the wind as I turn to look over my shoulder... and my glasses fit under it.
-

That's why no matter where I stop I don't ASSUME my helmet, tank bag, whatever won't get stolen.

If it fits you, and the price is right, you cant go wrong.
I have 3 CL-17's and it's because I know when I buy a HJC in large, it's going to fit my head..
I buy a new helmet every year.. I swap back and forth so they can dry, and after the third year, the strap gets cut and it goes in the trash.. The foam compresses and it's the FOAM that's keeping you from becoming a vegetable in a crash.. Compressed foam isn't going to compress in an accident, because it's already compromised. The HJC's from Motorcyclegear.com are $120 shipped.. Money well spent.. http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/closeouts/helmets/

That sounds like a good plan, when I find a good deal on a helmet that I like, I may buy a couple and do it that way .....

I went looking for a budget helmet a few weeks ago. Wanted an art project to help kill some time while on vacation. Found this one - Cyber US39 on sale from an outfit called MotoMonster.com. Delivered for about $60. I was expecting far less for the price, so I was pleasantly surprised by the fit/finish/comfort. Only issue I have is the removable temple cushions- they're not soo great with glasses, so I had to modify them just a tad so that my prescription spectacles fit comfortably.
It's decent comfy, not quite as quiet as the Nolan which has a chin curtain, but it's airy & cool. Has a DOT sticker.

This is the outlet store for Dennis Kirk.
Thank you for the information, Charles. I didn't know about Dennis Kirk selling clearance items on eBay, but thanks to your post I was able to get two nice pairs of riding pants for my Daughter, for her upcoming birthday. The price was near-giveaway.
-
I've had an HJC SyMax, but it didn't quite fit my hear well, and caused pressure on my forehead that became downright painful after riding an hour or less.
I also had a Shoei Quest full face, but it was expensive and I felt confining, and I'm a flip up kind of guy.
I did a little research and tried a Nolan modular, and love the thing.
Perfect fit, light, and fairly quiet, but I religiously wear earplugs too.
It ran about $140 or so, but Nolan, like many others, has specials on last years models ( different colors!), etc.
This may be a bit cliched, but look around in this site as well, it might give you a lot of good info on picking the right helmet for you.

I also use an LS2 helmet, the OF569 (3/4) model $99. Great helmet, but I also find it noisy. I'll have to try closing the vent as suggested above. I've had other helmets in the past, including a $200+ Shoei and those were just as noisy, so I figured it was just 3/4 helmet design flaw in general, so I wear earplugs under it.
I'm also interested in an intercom type system to fit. I even contacted LS2 for suggestions, but haven't heard back (2-days so far) - not sure how that would work with the noise, but I'd give it a shot if reasonably priced and if it fits under the helmet.
-
I have a LS2 386 which I am happy with except my speakers from my bluetooth do not fit wit out hitting my ears,
-
You can fit speakers into any helmet if you are willing to hog out a bit of the foam to do so. Just make sure you get it in the right place before you start cutting. They are very sensitive to location, ie, if they aren't centered you won't hear full volume.
When I cut on the Shoei I used a small tab of velcro to hold them in place and repositioned until the volume was good. Then marked the outer edge and cut out about 1/4" of the foam. Then put them in the holes. Worked well.
FWIW, you can fit just about any bluetooth system to just about any helmet. If there is not a place to clamp them on the outside then use some of the 3M exterior grade double sided foam tape.
-
Are you interested in a gently used Black Flip Face Shoei in a large? I used it off and on for about 2 years, alternating with my HJC before finally buying the correct size Shoei...same model.
-
I like the fit of Suomy. I get the two or three year old cosmetics on the top line ($400-$600)
helmets for $100 - $200. Shop for the sales. I'm way too old to care about what pattern they are.
-
Another brand to consider is ZOX. I had one a few years ago and I liked it a lot. Since then I had a Scorpian that I didn't like and now have a HJC that I don't like too much. My local dealer has a few ZOX helmets on the shelf and I tried the flip style helmet on. Feels good for $150. I might go buy it soon.

ZOX *is* a good helmet for the money. Dorcia has one. I'm stuck with a stupid $500 Shoei GT Air that I can't see out of very well now that it has broken in. I'd not feel so bad binning a $150 ZOX..
-
Nice thing about HJC is that they have different thicknesses of cheek pads to personalize the fit. Its noisier than my old Shoei, but ear plugs negate the difference.

I'm just now breaking in a Scorpion EXO CT-220, which is a 3/4 face model. But it's got some design choices which give it a little more protection than most 3/4s I saw (though less than a full-face), like retainers to keep the removable face shield from stripping to the side on impact. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I got a demo at a steal but even at full price you can bring one home for under $150. I'd certainly recommend trying on some Scorpions -- they're reviewed generally as being pretty good at the price.
-
I also have an Ace Z1r helmet that is ok but also noisy-was under 100$
-
As it is abundantly evident from this thread even, buying or choosing a helmet based upon what other folks say - even webbikeworld - is a total and complete gambit. The best thing I've ever found for me is just to go out to a local shop, try different ones on, and pay a few dollars extra to get it there. Even said, I might as well throw in my 2 cents.
My Arai Vector 2 is not a quiet helmet but it's the best fitting and functioning helmet for my specific noggin'. Vents and controls very simple and straightforward as well. I like that.
Though I've owned many HJCs in my time and they are good helmets for the money, I think the LS2 race helmet I have now for Summer riding would qualify is the best bang per buck. Extremely lightweight, very noisey but no more noisey than HJCs which are actually more noisey than my Arai.
I've always found Scorpion and Nolans to be good helmets but so heavy as to make my neck ache.
Due to my perceived quality and quiet, Shoei helmets would likely be my favorite but their fit does not suite me and even caused a great amount of discomfort over miles in a helmet that seemingly was sized correctly. I can't recall which ones fit what types (I think Shoei oblong and maybe Arai round????), but I really believe that's why I like my Arai so much and why I completely hated the Shoei on the bike.
-
The only thing you get with higher priced helmets are comfort features and sound reduction. Very marginal 'additional' protection. Long distance riders appreciate those amenities when traveling 500 miles days consistently.
Buy what you can afford and fits properly. An improperly fitted helmet can do more damage than no helmet at all.
-
It would be nice to have a shop nearby that offers a wide selection of helmets to try on, but there is nowhere around here like that. It's hit and miss when ordering anything, from boots to other clothing, and it's time consuming to send back items and wait for exchanges. I don't know what else to do though, so I'm trying to use the law of statistics and narrow down the possibilities somewhat. Maybe if most responders had good experiences with HJC helmets it would follow that I might be satisfied also. This thread was just a simple way to gage what others liked or disliked.
Let's see, now I've narrowed it down to only 300 choices :undecided:
-
Muley, I understand. I went to a local motorcycle shop and tried on all the helmets they had. I guess their brands and my head didn't agree, because even a triple-x large was uncomfortable. Then I found a sale on a CL-15 at motorcyclesuperstor e.com, read the sizing recommendations, and ordered an XL size. It feels like it was custom made for my head.
The trouble is that no matter what recommendations you get from others, you won't know if they apply to your bean.

You used their dealer locator, yes? http://hjchelmets.com/hjca/dlocator
Unfortunately, it's not as useful as Scorpion's. Those guys had little star ratings to tell you how big each dealer's selection is. With HJC all you can do is pick up the phone and ask how many models they have in your size at any given time.
-

Or you could make it a road trip, some time when you're looking for a 250 mile ride-out, find you a big dealer or a Cycle Gear place, somewhere with hundreds of helmets, and try them on. You may not find exactly the fit/color/style combination you like, but you will very likely find something that feels good and will give you a secure basis from which to order from the shop (and hopefully have drop-shipped at your house ....)
That's what I do ....

I finally just went ahead and ordered his and hers HJC CL-17 helmets in solid white, the only color acceptable at our latitude , and this was done as a leap of faith with no chance to try these on, etc.
Who knows if they'll fit, be reasonably comfortable, or even protect our noggins if necessary. I agonized over this purchase far too long, and I really hate to send things back.
Anyway, I've been vertigo free for about a month now and might chance a short ride soon, but this is probably good for another topic someday. :undecided:
-
Good luck! I did the same with the CL 17, way to tight even two sizes larger than HJC said I should need. If you have round heads, you might be just fine. As to the helmet, very good quality, quiet, great vents!

We wuz just talking about you at the Virginia rally, where you've been sorely missed, and wondering how things are going down there in Occupied Georgia. Understand that the pecan orchard is in the past, that you were working for the local or state road authority, and that Hubert Few's old EV is still chugging along the roads, but that's all the details we had.
Best let us know, or we'll be making up some details and we have good imaginations .... !

Some of the helmet mfg.s will sell you the foam liner separately, so then your helmet is almost like new. Give it a try if you are happy with the helmet you already have.

Best bang for the buck?
Modern: Icon Alliance GT
Retro: Biltwell Gringo with optional bubble screen.
Modular: believe it or not.... Bilt Techno Evolution Modular. Good flip lid and a Bluetooth that works and headphones loud enough and work brilliant with your phone. 219$ on sale . I paid 249$ and IMO still a screaming deal.

I have both my helmets out here in SoCal right now.. a mega buck Shoei GT air and a Bilt Raptor. I gave about 100 bux for the Raptor, and like it better. <shrug> I'll be wearing the Bilt when I take the Mighty Scura out for it's last trip in the Santa Monica Mountains.

I doubt I'll be at Cruso but Wayne's campout is looking good. I've got one jar of peche eau de vie and who better to share it with! Or you can just ride up here to Rock Hill for a night on the porch. I now live 3 miles away from the Sonny's that you and stopped at a few years ago.
-
You've got to try helmets on. Gail tried about a dozen different brands and settled on a nice HJC for about $150, I think.
I've always found a good fit with Bell and have been through three or four over the years -- currently an RS-1, now discontinued, but I paid about $220 three years ago. We have both these helmets set up with Sena transceivers. The Bell is comfy up to about four hours -- then I feel a little pressure just above my ears. A ten-minute stop for body fluid recycling and it's good for another four hours.
When I bought the Funduro the PO threw in an Arai that was too small for him. I like it around town (it's a bit lighter than the Bell) but after a couple of hours I get an unpleasant pressure point on my forehead.

Sorry, we loaded it in the van this evening. Lots of camping gear packed around it. Tomorrow, I'll spend all day smoking ribs for the crew, and Saturday I'd like to go visit Mark at MGC. Today's ride was the last in SoCal for the Mighty Scura.

I am currently using an HJC IS16, but I am a bit over due for a replacement. Will most likely buy another HJC, as I feel their quality is excellent and you more than get your moneys worth. My prior helmet, an HJC CL15(?) was my favorite helmet ever. I fished it out of a bargain bin for $75 at a BMW dealer when I was out in Phoenix. It's too bad you can't buy the exact same helmet a few years onward, but "improvements" are to be made.
-
Since we are talking budget helmets here, anyone tried an AFX?

Yep, I have an AFX, not sure the model. I've had it for several years. Very comfortable and excellent ventilation, but a bit noisy. Price was right at $100. Still use it occasionally.

HJCs are about the only helmets that fit me well. I replaced the first CL-Max ($139) with another, identical except for color and country of manufacture ($84 on close-out). Can't do that this time though - it's been replaced with the CL-Max II ($140 shipped). But, that fits exactly the same, so I'll be buying one soon.
-
Another budget brand is out there called Torc that I've never seen before.

I haven't thought about detente since the Cold War ended.
I actually have had great luck with HJC helmets. They fit me pretty well and since I wear open-face designs, the noise is about the same as the more expensive lids. I also have had some pretty great Z1R helmets. Z1R is the maker that shocked the staff of Motorcyclist some time back. It tested as well as the pricey stuff at a bargain price. These decent-but-affordable examples allow me to replace helmets at a smart interval...
-
The HJC CL 17 helmets fit both my wife and myself very snug, and, as others have mentioned, the cheek pads are quite tight against the face. I expected new helmets to be like this since our old ones had pretty much deteriorated to the point the lining was falling out.
One problem is that the wife can't get her glasses on with the helmet. I have trouble myself but eventually work them in. She, being a little impatient, decided to just not wear glasses while riding, but I like to see things
For the $, the HJCs look like pretty good gear. We'll see when "riding season" comes around.
-
Call me a fan of HJC too. I used to love Shoei's for their fit and high quality. My RF1000 saved my life when I got hit bad in 1995. But after that, as a disabled Vet, Shoei's became too rich for my wallet. I have a big square head. I can't even squeeze a Schuberth on my head. Nolan's press hard on my forehead. HJC's fit me as perfectly as the Shoei's did that I used for years. They have terrific fit & finish and you can't beat the quality to price ratio.
-
I went to order a replacement shield for my daughter's HJC CL-15 helmet for $22.49, and motorcyclegear.com had HJC CS-R2 helmets on sale for $69.00. Of course they come with a shield, so I figured I'd buy shield and get a helmet for just $46.51 more. Now she has a new helmet in red metallic that matches the Ninja 250 she rides.

I used to like HJC full faced helmets because I could keep my glasses on while I put the helmet on. I tried the HJC like the CL17 and found it was no longer possible.
I just have to wear modular helmets now.

Interesting... my CL-15 requires me to remove my glasses too. I didn't realize some don't (or didn't).

I have an HJC FG17 - same as the CL 17 just a different composite for the shell. Fit is the same as the CL. I wear thick rim sunglasses with mine all the time no problem, but I put them on after I have the helmet on. Good helmet, a bit tight in the front of my head at times but it is getting better. The helmet is noisier than I was led to believe it would be. The quietest is with the shield all the way open. Partialy open and its is LOUD. Venting is not that great either. So its all the way open for quiet and air or closed to keep the bugs and grit out and be stiflingly hot. During the winter its much better. My old ZOX helmet actually was quieter and had better venting and was certified to the ECE blah blah blah standard, but it was a cheapo helmet and the stuffing wore out quickly.

My HJC LT and AC series (Snell) helmets allowed me keep my glasses on while I put on either of those helmets. I normally wear modular helmets now. I was looking for a new Snell helmet and tried on the new HJC when discovered that I could no longer keep my glasses on while I was putting it on.

I bought a Bilt Apollo modular helmet a couple years ago w/flip down tinted lense and am overall happy with it for $100 except it ain't light. But I've come to the conclusion unless you pay a lot more $ no mod. helmets now are light. My previous helmets were Shoeis, Nolans, so that tells you my head shape. I think this Apollo helmet is still available new for $120 now. I did have to get some foam @ WalMart to seal the top of the helmet lense to keep rain water out and doing this got rid of a whistle noise prior. Replacement lense attachment brackets are only $5/set @ Cycle Gear stores if you break 1.

Ima toss my $0.02 in the ring.
I love my Biltwell Gringo. Comfy as a very comfy thing, light as a very light thing. I'm replacing my current one with another one, when the time comes.

I'm on my third HJC now. Always a great helmet. My last one even protected me from impact with a vulture at 60 mph. I don't understand the need to pay $450 to $600 for shoei or aria, they can't be that much more protective. Weight is another factor entirely, but I've always felt protected with HJC

Remember the days you could get a good one at the army surplus store?

If they had a bit more protection I'd wear the tanker helmet that I was stuck with for 6 years. But, the fiberglass shell is just strong enough to keep you from banging your head inside a tank, not from a fall. And it was pretty quiet too if you snugged up the chin strap.
PS I still remember as a kid the local AF base sold off a bunch of pilot helmets. The disclaimer was that they would not protect you when riding a motorcycle.
