As a recent inductee into the wonderful world of 2002-2004 V11's with my recent purchase of a nice all around rider of a 2002 LeMans and my perfect one owner, low miles (3175), unmolested 2003 LeMans that I was very fortunate to find. I'm really enjoying these bikes and now I'm wanting to round out my fleet with a 2004 Ballabio or Café Sport.
I found both my V11's via Craigslist. I searched near my home base and also looked outside my State as far as I was willing to go with a truck and trailer. That's how I found my '03 LeMans, had to drive almost 500 miles one way to get it.
These bikes just don't turn up very often on for sale sites. I check eBay, Craigslist, Cycle Trader and the forum classifieds just about everyday. For a motorcycle that when they were new and sat on dealer floors ( my '03 sat on the floor two years according to PO) they sure are rare and hard to find now. Especially nice examples.
I'm guessing the Ballabio's and Café Sport are very low in numbers in the US. Well that's it...I'm off for a ride on a V11 before it gets too hot.

Luckily,,Good Guzzi's are always worth the trip!!
1973 Eldo...... 1100 miles one way
1984 1000SP..1000 miles one way
1984 Cali 2.....470 miles one way
But,then I don't need much of an excuse for a ROAD TRIP!! :thumb:
I can also stop and "test ride" it in an area I've never ridden before.

Try finding a nice 1100 Sport
Two weeks ago I drove 2,000 miles to fetch and bring back a 5,770 mile, one owner '97.
There was a V11 for sale locally, a Le Mans I believe... don't think it sold.
Back in the day I had trouble finding a buyer for my V11 Rosso Mandello

Thanks!!!... Blakebird... for posting this!!!
I'm going to show this post to my wife so she knows there is at least one other "nutcase' out there who is willing to drive a couple thousand miles to get a Moto Guzzi !!! :thumb: :thumb:

Dunno where you live but if you want to save a bundle the way US/Canada exchange rates are these days, I still have an unmolested 04'v11 Sport for sale. 20,000 km. I'm in BC

Yes. There are more Ballabios than Cafe Sports. But it's all relative.
About 50 Cafe Sports were brought in in 2003 and again in 2004.
You're looking for needles in haystacks.
They're out there, and periodically they do come up for sale.
Personally, I'd be looking for a Coppa Italia, if I was looking for a nice V11 Sport.

I know the Café Sports are really scarce. I'd be happy with a Ballabio. Just would like a handlebar equipped V11 just to round out my fleet. A Coppa Italia would be great! But don't they have the single plate clutch?

No. The Coppa Italia is the same under the skin as the Cafe Sport, Rosso Corsa, and Nero Corsa.
Coppa Italia was '03 and '04. About 50 each year.

Rosso Mandello had the single plate clutch.

A red frame V11S would round out your collection quite well. It has more miles than you want, but it's been well sorted...and it has handlebars. I'll give you a good deal on it. http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=77098.0

"Like New. 4,000 miles".
I could see paying more for that bike than for one like yours with 55,000 miles.

I totally agree.
If you enjoy riding these V11's, then a Sport 1100 is up your alley. I know you are looking for handle bars, but try riding a nice Sport. I think you'll be even more impressed.

Thanks for posting that foto! I am negotiating on that Lemans right now. Totally impulsive. Never owned a spine frame, but have considered several. This one looks fine.

I had a 2002 for about 20k it was my favorite of any Guzzi but my dog couldn't ride it.. I wish I could get it but have no cash to do the bidding. are you local? I'm near the airport if you fly in I can maybe pick you up.

Thanks for the offer, you may regret it! I am in Colorado and if if I bite on this, I would like to fly and ride. Still counting my pennies....
-
I can help you do that depending on the date.. I'm vacationing the next few weeks and will be in and out of town..July 26-29 in Northern Wi then Wednesday/thursday next week I have free then I'm going to the Wisconsin rally if you want to add 600 extra miles to the trip you could come with. week after that I'll be on the North shore but may be home sometime to take care of the compound.
But I might be glad to drive you to Wilmar to get it and see ya later as you mount and head west, what a great trip that will be..
-
Can't beat a fly and ride to pick up a new guzzi. I rode my EV back to BC from Denver, by the time I got here I pretty much bonded
-
if you do fly n ride..the only concern I would have is that shifter spring and a copy of the directions for the fix (2002 was the year) I always carried one and never needed it.
-
Well, maybe getting ahead of myself but I have sent the seller an email saying I will buy it. Awaiting his reply. The catch might be that he said he had an imminent offer on the Sporti he also had for sale and was only going to sell one. If my (full price) offer is accepted, I have a new Guzzi!
So, the shifter spring. Who has the parts?

Long-time WildGuzzi supporters, sponsors, participants and all-around nice guys, Harper's, has the springs and they are genuine Guzzi parts-
http://www.harpermoto.com/
Not all of the V11's have the spring problem. I replaced mine at about 15,000 miles and the original spring looked like new. I still have it somewhere....
-
The spring on my LeMans let go at around 7,000 miles and got it fixed under warranty. I carry a spare spring to ward off the evil spring breakers.
-
Spring broke on my '03 around 30k mile mark. It has the correct boss size.
Took mine for its first spin last night. It isn't getting the attention it deserves.

Kevdog...Your bike is the twin to my recent purchase. Got to start putting some miles on mine to catch up to others on the forum. I picked up mine two weeks ago with just 3175 miles on it. One thing...do you still have the original speedo? I know the ITI's are prone to failure. I contacted FBF via your info and still waiting for a reply.
-
They can't be THAT hard to find. SF Bay Area is a huge market, anything you want you can find here, especially in bikes.
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/mcy/5134197576.html
See them up for sale once in a while around here. This one is right across town from here.
-
I think anyone interested better hurry up. I do not know the owner or the bike but you never know, that could change.

That's pretty slick.
Things to remember on the Scura:
1) Single Plate Clutch, unless already changed.
2) Factory suspension setting were for a 150 lbs person and universally criticized. If you weigh more, you'll have to spend some money on springs and such. (this was mostly fixed on the later Ohlins-equipped bikes)

Like almost everyone here, I weigh barely over 150.

I'm with you - I could easily loose 10lb. Pity about the current exchange rate.

Now, find that Ohlins V11.. you'll love it.

There is something about a dual exhaust that just looks so beautiful. The single garbage cans hanging off bikes these days look out of place and you might was well put a sticker on them that says "waste management", you just need a lifting thingy to take away the recycling.
That is my one big dislike on the Norge although the exhaust isn't too humongous, it still gives the bike an unbalanced look.

The CARC is monstrous and in the way of a nicely tucked right-side muffler.
Plus, all the cool kids of SS swingarms and single exhaust...
But year, there is something elegant in the solutions that were made to make the spine-frame bikes work...

I don't know, spine frames just seem like girls bikes to me.
Yea, sure they have strong motors, and swoop sexy lines, but that's what girls like. They want things that look good, so it happens to go good is not really a big deal. Seems like most the spine frame guys I now are just a "bit lite in the loafers," if you know what I mean. I'm not trying to say anything bad, but they do seem to be polishing their tanks an awful lot, just saying.
Jealousy is a bitch...
-
Beg pardon. My tank has been cleaned only once this year. For the last month it has been my main bike and our area has gotten more than its share of rain. I'll take my Sperry Topsiders over loafers any day as they dry quicker.

Well, the deal is sealed and I am the owner of an almost new 2002 V11 Lemans! Unfortunately, the fly and ride wasn't looking good schedule wise so I am having it shipped. The shift spring is still a potential issue, and I will need to decide if I should fix it preemtively or hope for the best. Thanks for all the offers of assistance and info on the spring issue. I'll post some pics me a ride report when she arrives. Woo hoo!
Spam alert: This does mean that my 2007 Griso will be for sale if anyone is interested.

Congratulations. Shame about the fly & ride not working out for. And Yes, pictures please.

Good luck with your '02 LeMans! On a humorous note I was the one trying to buy his '97 Sport 1100i. As stated he only wanted to sell one of his Guzzi's. You snooze you lose. No hard feelings though...all the best with your V11.

The PO replaced the original speedo before I bought the bike in '05/'06. This factory one has been fine.

David, I am glad there are no hard feelings. He preferred to sell the Lemans, or so it seemed to me. He said he had a pending sale sale on the Sport, so I acted fast. I was/ am a little concerned about the shift return spring issue, but decided it probably isn't a major issue. I am really looking forward to owning a spine frame.

you can probably set most of that concern aside unless your touring and don't carry the spare. just ride, if it breaks ride home in what ever gear your in or call a tow.
after a little saddle time I was totally confident in mine to go anywhere.

Actually I'm kind of glad things went the way they did. I did not really need another MG at the time...kind of swept up in the moment. I just got into these bikes about 6 weeks ago and since then have bought two V11's. I thought getting a 1100i Sport would be a nice way to round off my MG fleet. Still will get one sometime.
My '03 LeMans will have the same potential spring issue as it only has 3000 miles. My '02 has 20,000+ and PO stated that spring has been replaced. In any case welcome to the V11 fold. I see you've had several MG's over the years especially the older LeMans which I wish I'd bought when they were new.
-

That's what I did. Mine stuck in 5th gear 300-miles from home. Two up, with a trailer.
I took it easy and the bike got me home.

I think I stand corrected...if one digs a bit you can find these amazing bikes. Reflecting on my brief time with these bikes, I went from zero V11's to two of them in 5 weeks. Looking at a 2000 V11 Sport right now. So while I believe I'm done (for now) with the acquisition of V11's I'll always be looking to see what's out there.

The fly and ride is back on! I think I have it worked out to pick up the new to me V11 Lemans on Aug. 7. Very exciting, but...
Cleaned the Griso up today to list it for sale. Hate to see it go, but am looking forward to my first run with a spine frame. A new to me bike every few years keeps it interesting.

Hey guys,
I'm looking at a 2000 V11 Sport. Trans recall done no rod bolt issue. Thought having a red frame V11 would be a nice addition to my '03 and '02 LeMans. Anyone care to opine on the red frame V11's.
Thanks!

I had a red frame for ~7 years and really enjoyed it. Ultimately it was too large for sccotering around the city streets and recently got a V7 which fits my use better.
I never road the non red frame V11's. I did not feel it to be any more or less "twitchy" than other bikes I have ridden in the past. As odd as this may sound, other than weight difference and a slightly more upright riding position, my V7 doesn't seem all that much different in handling out on the back roads.
Cosmetically, I like the clean look of the original V11's despite not having the better suspension as others have mentioned.

The Greenie is just a *really* good looking bike to my eyes. That said, the Scura or Rosie would spank it in the twisties. (Lowryter content)

OK...you guys have me doubting my thought of getting a V11 Sport. I really don't need another V11 but since I got into these bikes so late in the game I find myself wanting to scoop up a few. I've never in the past ever wanted more than one of what I was riding at the time. These V11's just appeal to me in a way that other bikes have failed to in a long time.
What I'm really enjoying about the V11 is the rawness with an overlay of a somewhat modern chassis and really good brakes. Just a hoot to ride and an overall simplicity and ease of maintenance plus fantastic aesthetics that just add to its appeal. I agree that I probably should look more in the direction of a Ohlins equipped bike. That way I would have the best combination of engine characteristics and a really good chassis/suspension set up and the more than capable Brembo brakes...the best of a V11.
Maybe I just should try and find a '04 Cafe Sport? I think I'd rather have a handlebar equipped bike next. While I can ride my '03 LeMans without much effort I do find after 75-100 miles or so I'd like to be sitting up a little more. Plus...I think the Cafe Sport did not have the single plate clutch issue. But...a RC or NC would be a sweet bike.

You have learned rapidly, Grasshopper. Dr. John's race bike chassis gets the job done, good brakes, and that great Guzzi engine. Now, about that screen name.. :boozing:
-
Yeah...that screen name. Its left over from several years ago when I had BMW motorcycles and cars at the same time. Actually goes back about 20-21 years ago when I signed up an AOL account in 1994. Had two BMW bikes an M3 then. I've had BMW's most of my life so the name stuck.
Been BMW free since 2010 when I sold my M3. I should move on to a more relevant name.

OK fella. We'll see. You're a hot sierra rider that edged me out by a bike length at Road America, so therefore, I am slower rider on a slower bike.
But I might get lucky.
And it doesn't matter, the Greenie looks better. Something MS will never over come.

Hi, GuzziDavid
Now you're gettin' somewhere! Nothing wrong with early V11's, particularly if you like the look (and the greenies are especially tasty). However, you do already have two with clip-ons, and with the stated intent of getting a bike with a bars, you might want to focus on one of the later, special models. These have great suspension, and probably most of the bugs worked out. The Caf Sport is a great choice, but a Coppa Italia is just as good. The only thing that some people don't like about these later bikes is that the headlight is frame-mounted, and protrudes forward more than the fork-mounted version. That, and the color choices are limited, so you have to like them as they are.
Best of luck!

Yep, that headlight/fairing looks a little weird to my eye.. but I wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating

Shaun,
My intentions are to sell the '02 LeMans soon. I've only had it a few weeks but since then I acquired my '03 LeMans which is for all intents a new bike (3175 Miles when I bought it) and the V11 Sport I'm looking at has a set of MPH risers and they appear to be a bit taller than the stock bar position on my '03 LeMans. So that may help a bit with my longer rides. I know I could put risers on my '03 but other than installing the Ti kit I want to keep it as it is.
Meanwhile I do believe I'll keep an eye out for the right Café Sport or even a sorted (clutch, they have the single plate clutch?) Coppa Italia. At that point I may consider selling the V11 Sport should I purchase it, but it is a red frame and just for that I may just end up keeping it.
Having a good time with all of this. "GuzziDavid" I like that. Question for the mods...can I make a change to my screen name?

No. They were the last of the breed (the last of the REAL Guzzis)  before Aprillia, Piaggio, etc. and are as sorted from the factory as Guzzis get.

Chuck,
Good to know. For some reason I thought the Coppa had the infamous single plate clutch. This makes choosing the Coppa a no brainer. So either a Café Sport or a Coppa...hmmm.

Hi, David.
I understand the attraction as I lusted for a V11 for almost 10 years before I found myself in the right situation to change focus (I had been on Hinckley Triumphs for that time). I still remember staring awestruck at the Rosso Mandello at the Vancouver motorcycle show in 2001. My friend's comment was that it shouldn't be ridden; it should be placed under glass in the living room, and admired.
Keep in mind, though -- there are lots of other cool Guzzis out there, too!
Cheers,
Shaun
PS: The MPH risers are excellent. I have then on my '03, and they are a great improvement. I think that the clip-on design of the '02 and prior is different (below the upper triple instead of above). It might not make any difference, bit FYI.

Crap.
There's a Ballabio over on the V11 Lemans board.

Yeah, but at nearly $9k with about 8k miles on it, this guy doesn't REALLY want to sell it.

Yeah...I saw that one. Way too high. I just bought a 2003 LeMans with 3175 miles, some carbon pieces and it came with an unmounted Ti kit for a little more than half of what he wants. I have decided against the 2000 V11 Sport I was contemplating. In the end it was basically another version of the two V11's I have now.
That said I am looking for a 2004 Cafe Sport or Coppa Italia.

Yep. You'll find single plate on these bikes: Rosso Mandello, Scura, Tenni.
Some have been changed to twin plate, so it's worth asking.

I thought so...I have asked seller about this. waiting for reply.

Bike still has original clutch  Engine paint is somewhat bubbly as well.

then you can paint the engine when you replace the clutch. perfect.

I'm not a fan of the '02 bikes.
I HATE the bubbly black textured paint they put on the bikes in 2002. The '03 and '04 bikes had much better engine paint.
The single plate clutch may be fine for your use as a third or fourth bike. But, if you have to pay a dealer to upgrade it to twin plate, the service will be expen$ive.

I'm passing on this one...not a fan of the paint on the engine and too many $$$'s on the clutch. The flat black on the tank is not to my likes. Holding out for a Cafe Sport or Coppa Italia. Though I would not pass up on a nice Ballabio.
