Hello Motorcycle Riders and Guzzi Enthusiasts,
Our friend Gary Scott is honchoing up a Campout at Canton Lake the second weekend of September (11-13). Its a come as you are, not-a-rally, campout. Just show up and camp. Canton Lake is 100 miles NW of Okla City, 150 miles west of Tulsa, and 165 miles SW of Wichita.
The lake has been replenished with the rain, the water is blue and beaches are sandy. September should have cooler air, sunny skies and warm water. The campsites are first rate with grass and shade, paved pad, grills and close to showers.
The lake is 1 - 1 hour ride from Roman Nose St Park, Gloss Mountains St Park, Alabaster Caverns St Park, Little Sahara St Park, and Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. This is western Okla, so no promises for challenging roads (but Thunder Road around the lake has a couple of miles of twists).
Heres the skinny:
Gary Scott First Annual Camp Out (NAR) 11-13 September 2015

I'm not familiar with the steam power museum in Fairview, but the Gloss Mountains, just northwest of there, are worth seeing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_Mountains
And the nearby Ames Astrobleme site is actually pretty interesting: http://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.11104
Best local food is (no joke) at the Fairview Bowling Alley. Slightly further afield, its an easy run down to El Reno, the Fried-Onion Burger Capital of the World. http://newsok.com/el-renos-big-3-offer-options-for-best-onion-burger/article/3546898
-
If we're talking about the same place (The Major County Historical Society, just east of Fairview on Highway 58) they must have added those since my last visit. Although there is an old locomotive on the grounds, so that counts. Of course, lots of old tractors, including a few steam-powered ones, show up for their annual Threshing Bee. (Sept. 25 and 26, this year.)
Another unique area attraction is one of the last remaining sod houses, once the most common type of dwelling on the prairie. It's north of Fairview on Highway 8, near the community of Aline. Be sure to pick up an "I -heart-Sod" T-shirt in the gift shop.
-

The sod house is a really nice attraction to visit.
Gary an Loretta
-
Lorraine and I will try to make it. Probably cage in depending on gas prices, and cash flow.

Dusty
I know of a place on Hwy 8 west of Fairview that sells the best Black Diamond watermelon's I'm hoping their open an the green things are ripe umm umm.

Here's what I'm thinking as far as a ride on Saturday, for those interested:
https://goo.gl/maps/Dmr5Y
Leave campground approx. 10:00 a.m. for a fuel stop in Fairview.
From Fairview, north on Highway 60 then west on 412 to Gloss Mountains State Park. From there, north to the Sod House Museum on Highway 45.
After leaving the Sod House, continue north on 45 to the tiny community of Ingersoll for lunch at Smok-Shak BBQ. http://www.smokshak.com/Home_Page.html
After lunch, east on Highway 11 through the Great Salt Plains State Park, then south on 38 for a stop at the visitor's center. Continue south to Jet, then west to Highway 58, and south on 58 to Highway 412 near Ringwood. From there its a few miles east on 412 to Meno, and County Road N2710, running south into Ames. At Ames check out the Astrobleme Museum (and possibly the Hajek Motorsport Museum. http://hajekmotorsports.com/ The Hajek museum is a private collection that doesn't keep regular hours, but something might be arranged for a group.) From Ames travel west on Ames Road to Highway 8, then south to Okeene. From there its just a few miles west on Highway 51 back to Canton Lake.
The whole trip, according to Google Maps, is 177 miles. Approximately 3.5 hours travel time, not accounting for stops. So leave mid-morning, be back by mid-afternoon.
-
I've wanted to go to that car museum for some time.
Make sure to book a campsite.
-
Jay
That will make a great ride, :thumb: glad you offered Thanks :thumb:
Gary
-
As Delrod would say "Time to wake this one up" . Gary and John , maybe we can get Luap or Rocker to bestow official status to this unpretentious little soiree and give it an exalted place in the stickies  What say you boys and girls , who's in ?
Dusty
-
It's now a sticky.
If we're able to make it, we'll probably stop by for a visit on Saturday, on our way home from New Mexico.
-
It's a nice midpoint from Taos to Fayetteville. Just got back and hardily recommend the Guadalajara Grill. There are two and both are good. Of course, you can't go wrong wherever. Sure liked the cool air and sunny skies vs rain in Colorado.
Did you know that DH Lawrence had a ranch up there? It was a gift.
-
Well no one has mentioned there is a CASINO! almost with in walking distance of the campground.
They happen to be one that owes me money so I certainly will be there. They have good food too!
Chet

Chet
It's Oklahoma for goodness sakes. There is a casino within walking distance from almost anywhere in the state!
Note, they usually have free coffee and soft drinks, for the gamblers of course. (Guzzi content)
-
Chet
There is also an awesome ice machine outside the casino so ice is very easy to get.
I was talking to the people where you register an there is still some spots open for hookups buy the bathrooms.
Two on a site ( 9 bucks apiece) isn't bad for a state lake these days when you can split a campsite.
Gary
-
I just heard from Al Harris and he's gotten site 32.

Yum!! I could line up some possum on the half shell too...
I plan on riding out there Saturday AM. Or if anyone is interested, I have access to a new Cessna 182. I would be happy to bring it to Fairview and give some rides. The Gloss mountains are pretty spectacular from the air...

Helluva an offer Mike . Unfortunately I get airsick these days . Any takers on Mike's offer ?
Dusty

Now, I am really really jealous! Possum on the half shell.
Sound like one heck of a NAR.

I'd be up for a plane ride.

-
Mike
If you bring the plane to Fairview I'll come get you if that helps you out.
Loretta an I would be up for a ride as well.
It's getting down to 9 days till the campout an their is still some camp sites left 42 to 37 are taken as well as 32. Remember Canadian campsite B number 42 to 32 area.
If possible lets get a head count going so we have plenty of stuff on hand.
Jay thanks for the ride offer you will be the road captain if it works out for you.
Loretta an I went down to Canton Lake the 29TH to get some last minute things arranged an when we come through Ingersoll the BBQ place was closed it looked like they either had a fire or there was some major remodeling going on.
There is going to be plenty of firewood for evening campfires in the pits.
Remember Friday evening were putting on a Hamburger an Hot Dog meal.
For those of you who don't have a players club card at the casino you will receive a 10 dollar voucher to play on them. But for those of us who already have a card bring your A game an take them for all you can.
Ride safe an we'll see you on Sept 11,12,
Gary an Loretta John Langston an wife.
-
Gary , you know that the Kansas boys never read the forum .
Highs in the mid 80s , low humidity , lots of food , hell , 10 dollars to gamble with , surely someone can take home a jackpot .

I don't know about a fancy "ride captain" title or anything like that, but I'll probably ride Saturday, and if anyone wants to tag along, that'll be fine. If the Smok Shak is closed (I'm trying to verify) that'll seriously complicate things, as there aren't a lot of alternatives for lunch on the suggested route. We may wind up breaking things into morning and afternoon rides with lunch in Fairview or something. We'll keep all options on the table for now, and I'll see what I can come up with.

The OKC classic bike riders (aka Triumph riders) are having lunch 1100 in Hinton OK at Gloria's Kitchen. Although Hinton is in the opposite direction (1 hour south) vs riding into the parks, Gloss Mtns, and Cavern. I am only offering for info purposes for the ride captain- I've never eaten there.
(oh wait. Isn't Hinton where the mystery Guzzi collector is located? yes, I think so) (also Red Rock Canyon)

There is a nice place to eat dinner in Hardtner,Ks just 15 miles north of Alva,Okla the place is called ur place an they have excellent food.
Just a reminder.
Gary

I think I am going to be able to make it. There are still couple ifs. Mike, would love the plane ride. The last 182 I was in was our clubs's tow plane (No.1) 182. Hope to see you all.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a good place, but Hardtner is about a 70 mile (round trip) detour off the planned route.
There's an Aug. 29 dated post on the Smok Shak Facebook page stating they're closed for remodeling and will re-open soon. No date is given, and they're not answering their phone. Unless I get word that they've re-opened prior to the NAR, the new lunch stop will be the Dairy Mart in Cherokee. I hear their burgers and onion rings are pretty good.
-
Jay
Sounds like a great plan.
Gary

THE DAIRY MART in Cherokee OK ? Hey , that place is famous  Seriously , folks from as far away Nash and Pond Creek travel to Cherokee for their rings . Even the denizens of Kremlin make the journey. Sounds like a plan :thumb:

Well guys, I am still up for bringing the plane out to Fairview Saturday morning. I don't want to throw off the ride schedule though. Maybe do flights Saturday evening after the ride? I'm thinking everybody will be ready to just chill out at that point. I am thinking I will just ride the OHR out to Canton Saturday morning, go on the ride with you all. Then when we get back, I can go to Enid and get the plane, if anybody wants to go. Anyway, anyone have any other ideas?
-
Ya'll have fun. I have a last minute job that I have to do Friday and part of Saturday. If all goes well, I can still make Mo-Kan.
-
Oh man!!! This is killing me. My couple of "ifs" fell and I am not going to be able to come. Sounds like a great time and great weather.
Two college age nephews became available this weekend on short notice to help out with the heavy work around the place and a very cool elderly gentleman that was a friend of ours passed and the funeral is Saturday morning. Need to be there.
Have a great ride and time all.

Sorry to hear about your friend my condolences.

Mike come on out an do the ride with use Saturday morning then if you feel like it yes do the plane ride it would be a fun time an Loretta an myself are ready for a plane ride, she was born an raised in Longdale area I don't think she has ever seen the area by air that would be wonderful for her to see.
Were doing a pasta supper on Saturday evening for National Moto Guzzi Day last minute thought of Lowryder an myself it's shaping up for a fun filled weekend.
Come on out to Canton Lake an have a nice relaxing weekend with us Canadian campground B sites 42 to 32 by the bathroom an shelter.

looks like 70 degree weather and 50s at night.
And aside from the possibility of some scattered showers Friday morning, NO RAIN!
-
I'll be there tomorrow with some burgers and hot dogs for Friday night and spaghetti and meatballs for Saturday. Nothing fancy, just Sam's food cooked by ourselves. :food:
Thanks to Gary for coming up with the menu.
-
I'm disappointed to announce that the Hajek museum in Ames will not be open on Saturday. It seems that they're taking most of their crew and a number of cars to the upcoming NHRA event in Charlotte. I'd been working with them on the possibility of having someone available to open the museum even if not all of the cars would be available, but as of this afternoon they've informed me that won't be possible. Sorry, folks.
-
We're still looking for suggestions for lunch on Saturday.
Gary informs that all the previously identified places are closed. He reports that we already have 8 campers there tonight.
-
I am packed ready to leave in the am(Friday morning).Out of the blue a wicked hail storm strikes and a total disaster results. This is a mess like I have never seen,I am a local contractor(roofing siding windows etc.)and feel I must stay here to help.Thank you Mr.Scott for giving us a different NAR to go to,I will have to regroup and try again next year.

heading down around noon Friday. louie and me are caging it.

Is Gary saying that the Dairy Mart is closed too? Must have been recently, if that's the case. My contact in Fairview hadn't heard about it, but then he doesn't visit Cherokee on a daily basis, either. The Smok-Shak Facebook page is now listing Sept. 16 as their anticipated re-open date, which unfortunately doesn't do us a bit of good.
-
Hey guys, I'm stuck in Little Rock. Was supposed to be back in Enid this morning. Not going to make it to Canton
-
Had a fine time. Thanks to Gary for hosting, and everyone who helped. Especially the ones that contributed/prepared food. Ya'll did great. Galveston Dave (davedel44) and I had an excellent 200-or-so mile ride on Saturday and saw a lot of sights, even though we strayed from the planned route.
I learned that you can ride from Canton, Oklahoma to Siloam Springs, Arkansas without a stop for gas, if you are on a Stelvio NTX. No, *I* cannot ride that far without stopping.
I was too busy riding to take a lot of pictures, but I'll try to get a few up later.
A few bikes around the campsite:

Among other things, I learned that sod was laid grass-side-up on the roof, so it would continue to grow, and grass-side-down in the walls to prevent it from growing.

The staff at the Sod House recommended this German Restaurant in Waynoka:
Unfortunately, it didn't open until 5:30, and we were there for lunch. Fortunately, a local directed us to the former train depot, where what was originally a Harvey House now serves pretty decent Mexican food.
The restaurant is very popular with the four-wheeler and dune buggy crowd from nearby Little Sahara state park. An off-road-vehicle trail runs along the railroad tracks, so the ATVs can wheel right into the parking lot without having to utilize public roads.
After lunch we rode through Cherokee (yes, the Dairy Mart is closed on Saturday) and out onto the salt flats. No, they didn't allow any top speed runs.
