The specs on my B1100 list the tank capacity at 6.1 US gallons. My light came on and I ran another 22.6 miles, and then filled the tank to capacity with 5.35 gallons. If specs are right, that meant I had about .8 gallons left. The light should come on when tank level falls to 1 gallon. But if that where right I went over 22 miles using only 2 tenths of a gallon, and that definitely is not right!
My actual question is how far has anyone gone after the light came on? I have never pushed past 25, but I think it might go quite a bit farther?
-
Not far enough.
-
The point at which the reserve light comes on will vary from bike to bike, even in identical units. The fuel level sensors just aren't that consistent. My Norge will get between 35-45 miles maximum from when the reserve light comes on, so I suspect it comes on at about 0.9 to 1.0 gallons left. Typically, my bike (with its mods) gets 40-43 mpg, so my theoretical best range is about 240 miles. I usually fill up at the first good opportunity after 180, almost always before 225.

Just curious which mods. That is a little bit better than I get with my stock bike.

It all depends on where and how you are riding. Twisties up grades? A steady speed on a freeway?
A properly tuned Norge 8V with side bags and tail trunk can get 50 and more mpg at a steady speed. Hit a grade or twist that grip and knock off 7 mpg easily.
-
It's possible for me to get 50 mpg on the Breva 1100 if I keep the speed at 65, but for the most part that doesn't happen. I've seen 63 mpg while drafting behind a truck before.
-
ive never avged over 40mpg on my breva/// 50+mpg???? no way

You should see an easy 50 MPG on a properly tuned B1000 unless you are hammering it in the twisties.
I've gone over 50 miles on reserve. Beaver's light comes on later and quickly falls to empty.

I had gotten a few tanks over 50mpg on my '07 Breva 1100.
-
I ran 20 miles on my B11 after the light came on and the tank held 4.6 gallons. The first time I checked the mileage I got 51.9, this was on the BRP at a steady slow pace. The next check I got 44 mpg which I think is closer to reality.

Norge 2v here.
My fuel light usually comes on at about 220 miles. I then try and fill us as soon as possible. I have never run the tank dry.
My highway mileage is usually around 47mpg with a high of over 50mpg. Sometimes only 45mpg.
I should be able to make about 258 before getting really low. 47mpg x 5.5gallons.

Exactly my experience with mileage, Breva 1100. (I actually made 53 mpg on a tank recently but that was highly unusual. Must have caught a tailwind!)

2008 2v 1200 Sport. Filled up in NE Ohio. Rode I-77 to Charleston WV (230 miles.) Headed back next day, made it (with reserve lite on) to a gas station. Odometer showed 275 miles. Thought I might have to push! Same fuel tank as Norge/B11. Avg speed approx. 60-65mph. I normally fill up around 225/230 miles.
-
How many of us really fill to max anyway? I know I don't sit there trying to get every last drip of fuel in the tank while filling, there is always another station within range.
Always running to near empty isn't that good of an idea anyway, you're just not leaving room for much error. It can also take some fun out of the ride. After 220 miles no matter what, you are looking for fuel and as you round the top of that hill and see nothing for 10 miles, the sweats do start, we've all been there I'm sure.
Next is sucking the last bit of sediment through the engine, why do it?
-
220 to 230 is about as far as I have pushed it, I think 250 could be squeezed out of it, but agree no reason to drain it to the bottom, unless you have no choice. A small Rotopax in that situation would not be a bad idea on a long trip to remote areas if needed.
I am averaging about 43 mpg on weekend rides, have seen it north of 50 in the cooler mountain air, and a bit lower when in Ethanol territory...
It's strange that a 550 lb motorcycle can get just slightly better mileage than a Passat TDI (40 mpg on average commute of city/highway).

aerodynamics plays a huge role in that.

Just curious which mods. That is a little bit better than I get with my stock bike.
2008 Norge 2v, with:
- Power Commander V with Autotune, wideband O2 sensor replacing stock unit completely (not in addition to...)
- Open airbox lid from GuzziTech, using K&N air filter
- Stock exhaust, for stealth
- Reflashed ECU (GuzziTech) to allow PC-V and Autotune full control of the system
My riding style is mildly aggressive, more on the 'smooth is fast' side of the scale. I have about 95,000 on the bike in 3.5 years riding since I bought it as a new leftover unit in 2011; I should be back up to my 30,000 per year average in a few months
-
My Breva runs exceptionally well. It was set up and is serviced, when needed at RoseFarm. With that, I have never seen milage anywhere close to 50 plus.
I average anywhere from 37.5 to 44 mpg. I do have a few caveats, 98% I am using Chicago blend gas/ethanol, I ride pretty hard all the time, and I almost never ride very near the speed limit, and I'm pushing 250Lb in my birthday suit.
Perhaps if I were to travel on a tank at 60-65mph I might get upper 40s, but I have never had the patients to find out.
-
I'm an idiot. I just realized that we are talking about the 2V engine. I have a 2013 with 4 valves per side. Doh!

Actually, your bike is a bit easier to dial in, since its ECU can be reflashed directly. Check some of the threads for optimized maps for the newer 4V bikes...

I have gone 250mi on a B1100 2v full tank and not run out, that's as far as I've ever pushed it.. and I deff get nowhere near 50mpg.. But I live in the mtns and twisties and ride 2-up 40% of the time.
-
I will add that I've never figured fuel economy by maths... I am going by the dash display on avg mpg.. I re-set it each tank. Have no idea how accurate it is. I have seen everything from high 20's (city in the winter driving) to low 40's (moderate pace solo BRP rides or interstate in the flatlands). My Subie Impreza gets better milage in general than the Breva.
-
I have never even looked at the dash display for MPG.
I fill my bike totally up to the neck with the kickstand down. That way I don't over fill the tank.
I write down the miles on the gas slip.
When I have the chance, I divide the miles driven by the amount of gas added.
Gas Mileage the old school way.

Not to hijack this thread but I found a super neat app for recording your fuel consumption. It does exactly what it says, allows you to record your fuel stops and doesn't have any ads. I don't have any affiliation with the app author but you know how once in a while something comes along that just works really well? This is one of those IMHO.
Its called of all things, Motorcycle Fuel Log.
It isn't often that a smartphone app is easier to use than pen and paper but this one sure is.

My '07 Norge averages 39.5 MPG over the last 30,000+ miles that I've tracked on Fuelly.com. My best has been 51.9 and obviously I get a bunch in the mid 40s. I also get some in the mid to high 30s as the Norge is very happy at extra-legal speeds (normal cruise is 75+).
I normally fill around 215 and get antsy at 225. The light normally comes on right around 210.

My dash MPG readout is about 10% optimistic. Averaged over many, many fill ups, my 2006 B11 with Guzzi Tech refhash averages between 38 MPG in cold weather to 45 MPG in warm weather for longer rides.
If I fill when the light comes on, it takes 5.1 to 5.2 gallons to fill. I often wait until about 225 miles to fill, then it takes 5.2-5.5 gallons. The most I've ever put in at one fill up was 5.8 gallons, that was at the 255 mile mark.
aerodynamics plays a huge role in that.
Very true. For the same reason, I average 63 MPG with our 250cc Vespa (which only weighs 325 lbs), yet, can average almost the same on my 650cc F650GS Dakar. For that matter, I have a friend who is getting 60 MPG with his F800GT commuting to work, mostly 75-80 MPH on the highway.

I have found my mpg display to read slightly low on average. .5-1 mpg lower than calculated. I have close sources for 90 and 93 without alcohol and generally, except for trips, that is all my Norge gets. Highest ever displayed was 49 mpg when I rolled into Yorktown Va. going to Redline for a Rexxer flash. After the flash she has shed a little mpg. I believe I got a Rexxer T2 flash which is for a pipe and desnorkled air box. Trip to the mountains of NC with wife and all three bags packed full, I think she wanted to bring the kitchen sink, I averaged about 42 mpg and that was with some spirited runs up to 80 mph interstate. Some of the more entertaining mountain stretches was 4-7k rpm with less speed of course. Typical is more like 42-43 mpg local summer and high 30's winter. Being what the Norge is, and is now, I have no complaints on the gas mileage. It does seem to do best if slightly spirited driving is done, like gears are held a little longer, around 5k shifts. I find that different compared to any bike I have ever owned which seemed to get slightly worse with spirited driving.

I get between 38-42 mpg running around town. I have gotten mid 50's running 55 on the Natchez Trace from Jackson to Tupelo. On a run from Baton Rouge to Biloxi a couple weeks ago, I got 51. Interstate to New orleans, then 2 lane along the coast to Biloxi, less than 60 due to traffic and LEO. I did get the best mileage of our group of a BMW, and a Yamaha Bolt.
My lignt comes on around 200 miles, and I have gone up to 25 miles past that. I did stop and get gas a couple of times when the light came on and it took right at 5 gallons, so I guess I could go further if needed..
I almost always run premium NON ethanol gas. If I have get gas away from Baton Rouge, then I get what I get, but around here I know where to buy non ethanol gas,
200 miles is about the limit without a break anyway, its about 150 with the wife

I rode almost 1100 miles with Mile High Guzzi last month. He was on his Breva 1200 Sport.
The ride was at elevation. 5,000 to 12,000 feet ASL.
His bike returned 50mpg on every tank.
At that elevation, with a 6-gallon tank, the bike could have gone much farther than we ever did between stops.
