Title: Going racing
Post by: Rough Edge racing on July 23, 2015, 03:19:53 PM
Loading up the  old 650 Triumph and heading for northern Maine. A weekend of land speed racing at the previous Loring Airforce Base. 12 hours non stop from here.
The bike I built, ridden by a younger friend holds the national record for modified production (naked frame) 650cc pushrod gas on the one mile standing start, 125.00. Maine has 1-1/2 miles of acceleration, their record is 123.6. If the crankshaft doesn't fall onto the track we should easily beat this with another half mile of track...Hoping for 130 MPH ....
Maine hold the record for the fastest true bike, one the rider sit on and not inside, 315 MPH. Bill Warner who set the record was killed the next year trying to reach 300 MPH in the one mile.
And to keep it Guzzi related, the 85 Cali cafe I had holds the record for modified production at the ECTA one mile track in Ohio...Not so much the bike is fast at 117 MPH, everyone else is slower
Here I am yesterday reving the bike like a throttle jockey  to watch the gasoline vapor cloud from the carbs...

Good luck to you!  Do you know Frank John?  He's a friend who lives in Maine and is involved with LSR.  I met him from common interests in Kaw triples.

Thanks, luck is always helpful....The name is not familiar but maybe I'll see him there....A slight delay, my rider bought a long long toy hauler trailer that won't fit down my 350 foot narrow stone driveway. Gotta haul the bike and gear out to the road....

Good luck Rough! I guess this means you won't be making Jim's D.O.G. Party.

Best to you, the bike, and the rider.  Love this stuff and your abilities to make a bike fast.

Rough Edge,

Break a leg! (figuratively, not actually).

Love the video. Your Triumph makes all the right noises.

Be sure to get some video at the track.

Lateness.

Rough Edge,
Awesome, I wish I were there to see and hear the Triumph make a run or two.

If you find the owner of a white, high horsepower Mustang, that is a friend of mine by the name of Mike Smith, kindly send my regards.  He will be setting a new mile record (we hope)

I will be leaving San Diego at 0300 for Maine, looking at five days on the road.

Good luck with the racing.

Best,
Rob

Hey, when did you get back into town ? I was cleaning your windshield and thinking about you today.

And now you're going again. Well, kill some bugs for me on the way to Maine, and please tell the lady I said hello.

Frank sent me this photo.  Your Triumph, I think.  You with the hat on?

His Kawasaki H2 lost its front sprocket at 125 mph, he tells me.   Luckily no real damage.
