Hey ya'll I am new to the world of guzzi & I have a frame for a '76 v1000 convert that I'm going to build on. Money is going to be a little tight for the foreseeable future so I'm interested in finding out thing like if any engine size is particularly difficult to find parts for or is the 949cc compatible with transmissions other than the 2 speed -etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. if you are considering a transmission swap... you might as well stop right there and move on to a different donor. it can be done, but the list of parts required is extensive ... which doesn't translate to tight budget!
Also there is virtually no market to sell your "2 speed" tranny to recoup costs.

Normally I would go ahead & buy everything & then ask the question but this time I've held back. All I have is the frame so I haven't committed to any engine or tranny yet. I'd like to keep the build early to mid '70's. Are parts for the 850cc relatively easy to come by?

If you're doing this on a budget, you'd be better off starting with a complete (or nearly so) bike, rather building one from parts. Could get really expensive "Johnny Cash style".

What Charlie says, but yes parts are easy and interchangeable for the most part.

I stuffed a Jackal EFI engine into my Convert frame. It fits.
I agree that you're better off starting with a complete donor bike rather than a bare frame.
