Title: Idle Speculation
Post by: ohiorider on July 29, 2015, 04:02:58 PM
Looked over 8 v specs on the Guzzi USA page.  I was curious about the differences in basics such as bore and stroke, torque, etc.
Bore  Stroke  Torque @RPM  HP@RPM Displacement
Cali 1400 Custom:  104    81.2     87ftlb   2750   96@6500  1380cc
Griso 8vSE               95    81.2     80ftlb   6400 110@7500  1151cc
Norge GT8v              95    81.2     76ftlb   5500 102@7000  1151cc

Cali engine in a Norge would make it a monster two-up sports tourer, though it undoubtedly pulls like a monster with the 1151 engine.

Again, just daydreaming ...... cooling down in the a/c after spending a few hours on the Griso with dash thermometer reading 93F.  Nothing like my ride back from Dahlonega in July of 2012.  Dash temps then showed 110F. Soaked my t shirt in cold water at every rest stop in GA and TN.  Blew dry in 10 minutes!

It only costs $30K to get both bikes for the swap. I would wait for a 011 model to go tits up for a doner bike

But the Norge makes more HP and is faster

All else being equal, using the Griso/Norge ECU with the 1400 in the Griso/Norge, I could turn it into a tyre shredding torque/horsepower monster that would be able to pull down small buildings.

I wasn't considering doing it myself.  As I said, just idle speculation ..... simply wondering what a Norge would feel like with all that torque  at less than 3k rpm.

Out of curiosity, do you think it would be possible to 'swap' the 1151 cylinders, pistons, and heads for those from a Cali 1400 without going to the trouble to actually swap engines?  I'm thinking like swapping HD Sportster 883 cylinders and pistons with 1200 cc components? Not sure it holds true as much today as in past times, but as we used to hear "there ain't no replacement for displacement!"

The idea of putting a 1400 top end on an 1151 bottom end had been in the back of my mind for a couple of months. This thread prompted me to put the question to Pete.

Yes, they would fit.

The 1400 is twin plugged, due to the way the flame front propagates in the cavernous combustion chamber, so that would present a challenge in getting the ignition advance right. A challenge I'm up for, gentlemen.

I think I want to try this. Expensive though, not much change from $4K.

The assumption is that the exhaust and throttle bodies from a Griso would bolt straight on. Using the 5AM ECU, I would build a completely new map, with the emphasis on low/midrange torque. You know, for the small building demolition. :D

Sure would.  I had 147 ft lbs and 140 bhp in my dyno'd Rocket 3.  Hang on!
