Title: 1996 California 1100i
Post by: gutzi on July 30, 2015, 08:25:43 AM
Hello all,
Looking at a used bike, per subject, and want to know any typical issues for a bike of that year.  Not just the kind of things a used bike of any kind might have, but things peculiar to that year and model.  Used to have a 2003 california stone and they had some factory fixes regarding clutch, fork, etc., that were know issues in that year.  Does this year bike have some peculiarities of its own to look for, factory recalls, dealer fixes, etc?

Thanks in advance.

BTW if someone has a used EV for sale, would be interested in chatting

I've had mine for a while and although it was not problem free I'm having trouble remembering what those problems were.

Terrible seat.
Had to have the transmission rebuilt at around 100,000 miles.
Relays. PyroDans replacements work great.
voltage regulator replaced several times.

I've had mine for 14 years with 88K showing.  Tach quit working early on, replaced it with a voltmeter figuring I'm more likely to run out of volts before I run out of revs.  Replaced the Ducati alternator early on due to wiring up and running too many accessories, so I figure that was a self induced problem.  Replaced the shift return spring at 85K and clutch plates at the same time as long as I had the tranny out.  Replace the relays and keep your electrical connections clean and you'll be good to go. Oh, and I think the stock seat is one of the best I have sat on.  Different strokes and all that.

97 Cali 1100i owner - I have pulled a timeout camper, as well as a couple of smaller cargo trailers. Bike is set up for a 300 pound 6'7" rider. I carry an occasional passenger on short day rides.

Rode from Jacksonville, FL to Los Angeles in a leisurely 5 days. Have ridden several 900-1000 mile days. Met and rode with SoCal hooligans. Carry tools to fix other bikes.

Routine maintenance and nothing else. Did replace voltage regulator with a Harley one, so I don't have a generator light.

If I could find replacement disks I would not be looking for a replacement motorcycle. This may be my first Guzzi sold with less than 150,000 miles on it. It's got about 100,000 on it now.

Used market, Goose. I got 3 rotors from the newsletter classifieds for about $50 apiece.

I had a 96i  The only problem I remember was the side stand switch cutting out at higher speeds. Bypassing it solved the problem

Only "problem" with my 1996 Cali 1100I was a collapsing  vacuum hose to the MAP sensor, which the dealer could not find, Guzzi NA replaced the ECU to fix  . Later on I found the problem ( by accident , of course). Clutch plates  lasted about 35k before the metal would shear from metal fatigue( on 1 only!), occasional rectifier/ regulator and ...stellar otherwise

I had a 95 1100i, nice bike needed a clutch at 40k.
tube type rims
the TPS is unique and can't be swapped with a Harley unit like the 98 EV.. not saying that's good or bad, I never heard of TPS problems with the pre EV "I" bikes. it might be more enclosed from the elements.

the CPU is under your tailbone is why the seat sucks, you can move it in with the battery if you get an oddesey and then fix the seat. maybe the PO did this already.

I had a 1994, which was basically unchanged through 1997. I put 120,000 miles on it.
It had the general set of issues. But the common thing on those years was needing to put in good relays (see Pyro Dan). And the regulator wasn't too reliable.
