Title: Leaky head stud ~ V65

So my v65 has had this persistent oil leak from one of the studs

At first it leaked VERY little, it sort of welled up around the threads of the stud and filled the recess for the allen key

I have mostly ignored it because hey, it's minor and ill fix it next time the heads are off?? Well I have done some work on the bike, including just re-torque the heads & set the valves

As you can see from the above pic, it's no longer just welling up inside the bolt around the threads, now it is leaking out onti the fins, where the wind blows it on the starter, frame rails, and muffler.

It's not a lot, just a few drops over the course of the ride, but enough to fill the well of the bolt..  I am almost sure I even saw it bubble while riding this AM!


So I am looking the the parts diagram... and to me it looks like there is a washer under there... #13 shown here???  (I think)

I was kinda shocked because i expected an O-ring or something... 

So I guess the question is:

1. Do you think replacing this washer will fix the leak

2. Can I replace it easily without removing the head (ie: just undo that one, pick out the old <possibly broken> washer and just torque that one stud back down)

3. Am I even looking at the right part on this diagram?  :tongue:

4. If it's not the washer #13, it's prob the base gasket #24, or head gasket #19 right?  :cry:

The cap that screws in may have an o-ring like the big twin.  I never had that problem on my V65 engine so not a 100% sure.

No Orings, only on the oil holes. Washer #13 is the flat washer under cap nut. Head gasket has a sealing compound on it, like a bead running around it. Yours most likely has the earlier style w/no bead.  This was an update that came out long time ago.

Get a set of head gaskets, orings for oil 1 per side .

Looking at that pic, I don't see any oring.  I have a paper parts book w/updates added in.

i DO need an oil O-ring? can you point it out on the diagram by #?

What you said about the head gasket reminded me of something from Guzziology and I found this:

I used that 300 crap once and could NEVER get the heads off of Cyl's. I got my own crap, I am one who don't read that book, don't need too.
Do as you wish and I'll watch. When you break the fins trying to separate the heads, I'll be retired. Collecting SS & not writing books for sale.

oring goes w/base gasket.

I suggest you try replacing the standard flat washer with a doughty (dowty) washer.
They are one of the miracles of our age along with heat-shrink and cable ties.
