The kickstand falls down at speed and cuts off the motor. There is nothing obviously wrong with the return spring and it seems to have tension in it when I examine it while stopped. Any ideas?
It is a 2008 breva 750 with 12k miles on it.

Is it like the BBs , designed to have 2 springs ?

My 2004 Breva did the same thing. I always had to keep the hinge point well-lubricated, and eventually I found a bit stronger spring to replace one of the two it comes with. The leverage point of the springs is not well located to give enough tension to pull the stand back when it moves down with vibration on extended highway runs (i.e., after going over railroad tracks, etc.). Any dirt or old lube in the hinge point will make this an issue.

I used to have a 2007 Breva 750 and had the same problem. I posted the problem on this forum and someone gave me the part number of a better replacement spring (aftermarket brand). I replaced one of the springs with the new one and never had another problem. I no longer have the bike or the number but maybe someone with the number will see this and pass it along. For the time being, you should use a nylon tie and strap it to the frame so it will stop falling until you get it replaced (that is, if you have a center stand?)

It's Moose Racing exhaust spring M7712 at 3.3 in (83mm)
Lubrication is the easiest remedy. Use a spray, and just keep up with it once is a while.
Other options:
The sidestand nut might be loose. Remove the left muffler to reach the nut,
and tighten w Loctite.
Put a copper collar on the pivot, which lessens friction and gives good
operation. It's Jim Long's idea. Found at Lowe's, labelled as "Repair Coupling
Copper" 1/2 inch internal dia.
Bend the factory spring to get more pull. Take the factory spring and bend a new hook in the end. This shortens it and adds tension. Do this by taking it off, heating the end with a torch, and bending. Don’t let the coils heat up, as this removes their temper.

Thanks so much guys. I just lubricated it and will give that a try.

2003 model here. Stiction surfaced early on in the piece, causing motor stumble (not my one) Followed WD40 solution and have never had any probs. In fact, I think last time I followed it up with some chain spray lube. Must admit that the spring on mine seems quite strong. perhaps they weakened it a bit with later models?.

Been fighting this problem for a couple years. Clean and lube the stand, -all is good. - That is for a few weeks or a couple days as was the case on a recent week-long trip. There obviously is more to this than meets the eye.....
I bought the Dennis Kirk springs cited above in this thread and returned them because they were just WRONG.
